In summer, hmm some issues with higher temperature even as big as it is?

The SSD slot is attached to the board in a position very close to the fan, so I don't think effective cooling for the system at large will be impacted all that much.

What, if anything, I would worry about is the SSD itself overheating, since it's enclosed in a plastic coffin and only marginally affected by the fan. And, since it's separated from the rest of the air space inside the console and the air around it will probably not be very affected by the fan, I don't even know how much of a difference a heat sink would do.

But then again, I assume Sony did their calculations and kept this in mind to some extent when they built the chassis, and I'm just a hardware chimp going by limited experience and some common sense physics.

seems like quite a rough calculation imo. lacking finese in the implementation

they could have made the cover double up as a heatsink once you remove it to install your own ssd. something like the inner sides are fins and they include a thermal adhesive pad

Considering the paltry SSD size, it's still kinda baffling that basic features like SSD storage upgrade and external USB archive/cold storage weren't options at launch and will take upwards of 7-10 months to deliver...🤷‍♂️

Yeah but luckily PS5 has no GP and every PS4 game defaults to my T7. I still have lots of space left. Its going as fast as my Xbox with GP where I don't bother to transfer retro to an external and all enhanced games go to internal anyway.

I think that would have been difficult because there is not a universal standard for M.2 SSD sizes. So if you calculate your lodging to "just fit" some SSDs, you risk some others not fitting at all (like ones with a sudo-heat sink incorporated in the design).

If I'll ever have to install an SSD in a PS5, I might just put a heat sink on myself and then not put the plastic cover back on at all, regardless its size. It would still be shielded by the external plastic plate, it's not like it would be much more exposed to dust than an SSD in a standard computer after all.

They just wasn’t forward thinking as dear Xbox.
Expandable storage
12tf
Sustained performance

You don't have smart shift without forward thinking. High clocks were by designed and it wasn't some last minute decision. The flaw with expandable storage similar to XsX is that you have to buy storage device MS gives you. PS5 allows you to choose your own that's compatible.

I saw some people speculate that the plastic plate will make the air flow through the SSD slot better, leaving it open without the plate might make airflow worse.

So there’s a regular sized ssd in there? And a m.2 expansion?

If by regular you are thinking of a 2.5 inch pc type drive no, the built in ssd is part of the motherboard and the flash chips, controller and io are soldered to it. Then there is the expansion which this thread is about and its for a pc pcie4 nvme m.2 ssd.

The band chips would be fine though. They like it hit actually. Its the controllers who need to be cooled.

Since the addons SSD anyway will be commanded by PS5s Custom Controller could it be that they somehow "deactivate" the third party controller and data unaltered just passes through?
The PS5s controller is cooled enough I suppose..

there's some cerny magic in this design . /s Honestly how is it possible that they didn't realize the heat increase they would need to change the fan speed (probably in addition to generating more noise will it take more watts?)
I don't like the sound of all of this at all..

I think they knew and that’s part of the reason they didn’t make the feature available at launch. They had to do internal testing with existing SSDs and look at the thermals before launching the system.

But I don’t think the difference in fan speed or noise will be huge.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Despite it heat out put I doubt it would have any effect of the PS5 heat output, the Fan should do it's Job

I hope you are right. And even more I hope this rumor is completely false because we know how temperatures affect consoles. from all points of view from sound to performance

Its kinda interesting that SSDs degrade less when they are in that perfect sweetspot. Too cold makes them degrade faster, too hot makes them degrade faster. Maybe this whole testing is to provide them enough data to be able to set the optimal airflow to make degradation to a minimum for each specific SSD?

I’m waiting for the “we can’t come to agreements on ssd speed so this feature will never work” as an excuse to NEVER enable this.
