First time I've seen that first video in the OP, agree with Jaffe there, WTF is going on where you have 3 years to prepare for a new console launch but there's not a single new game at launch for it.

I fixed my original post to not leave confusion or nuance on the table. Jaffe is cool and correct. But I think the point stands for ps5 too. I don't think they have a system seller to launch with.

Say what you will about Miles Morales, Sackboy Adventure, Demon Souls but those are good titles to have around your launch that might give people a reason to look your way over the competition. Having said this, Microsoft did invest a lot of money into having backwards compatibility last gen (PS4/XONE) and now current gen (PS5/XSX) so even if they are a little weaker in that department, I don't think it will matter all that much given that the early adopters will have some things to play and obviously third-party games will fill the void.

I bought it and I love the console, but there's this thing in my mind that says "where is the new shit?". And it's not like PS5 is way better. Demon's Souls remake is basically the only next gen game, but everyone knows that it's not really the new shit.
This early next gen is very weird, and has no comparison with any other at all. But if I can do an analogy of both launches, it's basically the same as the Saturn launch - too little, too early

A remake (amazing game but not a system seller IMO), a cross platform game that is just as good of an experience on the PS4, and Sackboy probably good but not a sales driver. MS is hurt by not having Halo, I think that would be a system seller for MS and a Sony tent poll like a GoW 2 or an Uncharted, would be a bigger sales driver. Maybe it is smarter to wait on those games until there is enough stock to warrant the release.
The biggest PS5 and Series X sellers with be Valhalla and Cold War, Cross Gen, cross platform games. It tells me people just want new systems that are faster not new content.

Fully aware. You could make a GoW2 cross gen game that would still be a tent pole release for the new console. Just like a cross gen Halo would have been.

Jaffe is totally right. Why would I buy an X-Box when a PC, a PS5, and my roommate's Switch would give me access to every single game out there? The X-Box adds nothing at all. I've been seriously wondering if this will be the last console release from Microsoft as they seem much more interested in becoming a "Netflix of games".

I have Miles on the PS4, and I am not trying to diminish it. I just think it is more of a Uncharted lost legacy level of game. Not a bad game by any means but still not what I would call a tent pole release.

Many people bother with new console generations because the old hardware isn't supported any more. If you want to keep playing new games you need to upgrade your hardware. RTX enhances the experience and overall excitement for many folks, no doubt. But many are willing to forego the visual candy for a better performing, less cinematic experience. People just have different preferences.

it's always weird in the cross gen period and making the decision about whether and when to upgrade. some people only have the choice of playing the gimped version or nothing because they can't afford the $400 - $500 for new kit along with the cost of the game. then when their current system doesn't get new releases any more they start looking for a used console from the new gen so they can play new games. I know lots of people in that situation.

I'm not looking forward to when it's their time to be the parent. I'm afraid the result will only be even more cotton-stuffed-armpit-kids walking around. With "no" hardships left (compared to living in Europe during WW2 for instance) in our lives we simply have too much time to compare/think/overanalyze everything and everyone. It's not healthy.
