Seagate - 1TB Game Drive for Xbox Series X and Series S Is $220 / 270€

They have not clarified if u can do that yet
As far as I read it’s only for last gen games
I can't imagine a scenario where you can't put the file on an external HDD for storage. It just wouldn't be in line with anything MS has done with the Xbox one.

I can store my games on braill and can still load them on my X1X.

I don't understand why people say "thank goodness I bought the physical version" do you have some sort of magic machine that doesn't require install of 60gb to play?
Not really any different from digital with a good internet connection.
Not sure about microsoft but Sony caps download speed no matter the connection. With covid they made it even slower.

I hope this changes.

With how much SSD's are coming down in price. If and when I were to get a Series X, I think I'll just delete un-played games and download what I want to play. Thankfully my ISP speeds are super good so I'm not too fussed. I've got roughly 2tb of SSD and 6 tb HDD on my PC and even with all that regular HDD space, I still just swap games around on my SSD to play. Can be annoying but the performance is worth it.

Though sometimes is gets down to deleting some really fun games that I might want to play and it's like

I currently have 469 games installed in my main X and 301 on the bedroom one. 🤷‍♂️

I never know what I might want to play.
Finally someone that gets it. See dozens of posts on this forum "Why would you need more than one or two games installed?!" Cause I'm not downloading a 50gb patch when I feel like playing something. Once something gets downloaded and installed its staying on there.

It is really ugly. I have the Seagate XB Game Drive 4TB HD and it looks really great with my XBS.

Not sure if you’re the same but I get over 250Mbps so I can download most games within 30-60 mins, it’s not an issue for me.
I get 300/300 but I’m impatient if I have to wait half an hour I might just end up playing something else.😅 I‘ll obviously have to make some choices next gen.

Guess I’ll keep the big hard drive for BC games and the smaller one will hold next gen games as I move them back and forth.

Just manage your games the same way you've been doing for years. Not sure why anyone thinks they need extra storage for a launch system that doesn't have the next-gen games to fill it. This is a concern for late next year and beyond.

2.4 gbps and 1 Terabyte should not be $220. thats utter nonsense.

you can get those for a $100 on newegg.

Is it a completely custom SSD built to the identical spec in the system and designed to have perfectly sustained speeds in every use case?

No? Okay then.

I figured they'd gouge us on the storage cost - it's proprietary. It costs USD$80.00 less than an entirely new XSS console. No one's gonna jump on that thing until the prices comes waaay down.

Come on, console gamers have been talking months about how superior their SSD technology is compared to mainstream PC, and now you dont want to pay for performance? Its a custom, hot swappable, top of the line 1 TB of storage for $220, I think the price is fair.

People want advancement but rarely want to pay for it, double think is a rampant problem with gamers.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Okay, the two consoles already ran me over $1k. I think I am going to chill on that drive until I really need it. You can use a regular drive for non enhanced games correct?

I have multiple Seagate drives that look like that, just not Xbox branded. They are so handy because they are so small and don’t require external power.

My 8 TB Seagate drive might be giving the series S a run for the money in size. Fucking thing is big and eats a power outlet.

At that price they better put Games in 50 gb ssd storage and additional files in consoles ssd and price games to 70 bucks already

the new expansion sort of plugs into a slot i believe.

Appearance wise think PCMCIA Wi-Fi card from 15 years ago
Kind of reminds me of a sleeker version of old GameCube memory cards, but it plugs in the back instead of the front.

I remember 10 years ago towards the end of the 360 gen we were talking about how they would fit games in discs if they got to big and we came up with the idea that they might use flash drives (very similar to the look of this ssd) and ship them on those instead of discs.

Boy were we way off.

So is this thing actually different from a similar PC drive or are they just price gouging because they can?
PC drives have issues with heat and sustainable speeds, sure they have great peaks but many of them under load cripple and default to much lower than advertised read/writes.

That's the biggest difference here, this drive is created with the expressed intent of sustained operation at 2.4GB/s

Regardless of whether Jeff Grubb says it's a reasonable price, I'm simply not paying that.

Besides, if the read and write speeds of these SSDs are so fast, surely we can delete and replace games very quickly. That or I just won't buy additional games until they lower the prices.

Just do what I'm doing, load up a massive external with whatever you want and swap out games you want to play when you want to.

Yeah people are just going to have to accept that swapping games back and forth between standard external storage is going to be a much cheaper option than buying SSD expansions for either console. You can get a 5TB external HDD for half the price of this 1TB SSD.

Sony’s solution will be the same price or even more as it’s faster, it will be a massacre . The price we pay for fast cartridge like io.

When you have a disc you essentially have the 50gb install file on your shelf. When you put that disc in the console it’s gonna install it much faster than it would be to download it. I know there are patches on top of that, but it’s still faster. Even if you have a good internet connection. I never get good speeds from Sony’s servers.

Xbox series X.A high powered gamepass console where you can play more than a 100 Games but only download 5 of them in your device.Or you can always sell your kidney in the deep web

Yup. I have 14TB on my X. 1TB internal + 5TB and 8TB externals.

Definitely this is going to be an issue for me as well. I have right now like 400 installed games on my One X and external.
Not a deal breaker, but Id say 40/50 is a sweet spot, counting like 5 or 6 playing right now; games i play with friends online, kids games, gamepass new entries, gold games of the month, etc

The way I’m thinking about this is...
You install TWO COD size games and you need to pay another 200 on top of your 300...

I don't have any issue from ms, take an hour or two. But the idea of using a regular hard drive as offline storage will work for most until the ssd is cheaper.

Wait until we get the prices on the SSD's required to meet the INTENSE SSD speed performance that PS5 requires.

I'm sure it'll be a little less, but the price won't be pretty, at least Sony will allow for 3rd party SSDs not strictly proprietary SSDs, there will be slim chances on any alternative brands to make this bizarre niche product for Xbox Series S/X.

Proprietary Storage vs Open Market Storage, one is subsidising the XSS/XSX and the other one is not as it is just open market SSD fast enough to work well.

No use for it now. There is already 1 TB to fill, and everything last gen is on a 1 TB external hard-drive and will stay there. I could not even fill this external hard-drive on the course of the entire gen...
