Battletoads Review Thread

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Sony exclusives have a big cult following, they spam the 10 button on metacritic. The user rating is abnormally high compared to metarcritic review score. Weird.
Sony gamers ? you are biased towards your exclusives. The user rating is abnormally high compared to metarcritic review score. Weird, is not it ?

Guess it turned out just like how it looked in the videos I've seen... and that's no bueno. For starters the art style is HIDEOUS, the humor is so try-hard and barely passable gameplay. Is this what all the fuss is about regarding gamepass? (low tier gaming first party games), it's a pass for me on gamepass I'd much rather pay for actual AAA first party exclusives rather than... well "free" this.

This game is a lot of fun. Ive been playing on low difficulty with my five year old and having s blast. He couldnt do the bike part but it keeps respawning as we hit check points so he is having fun. He loves the heave punch for rash i believe. He just keeps yelling chicken. 😂. Might be one game i get to finish with him.

This game is pretty damn good. Super polished and I think most will come around on the art style after spending some time with it. Obviously, keep your expectations in check - This is still just a beat 'em up. Probably the best Battletoads game by virtue of not being fucking impossibly difficult.

I think the metacritic average is spot on. This isn't as great of an experience as streets of rage 4 was. Fun game but nothing amazing about it. I somewhat enjoyed the game but kept on losing interest after playing for a bit.

I tried it on my arcade cabinet setup and like Streets of Rage 4 (I love that game), the experience got much better. Although playing those mini games on this setup is painful XD

The more I see of Dark Queen the more the awful art design sticks out to me, she legitimately looks disturbing, the way that she's completely shapeless and like a twig and the artist can't draw hands especially in some scenes it doesn't even look like hands at all. And when she opens her mouth it's as if two thirds of her face becomes her mouth lol.
I just really REALLY hate it, it's not even charming at all imo.

What's especially strange is that the artist isn't even THAT bad, but for some reason in game it just looks awful.

This wasn't on my radar at all but then I saw SkillUp's take and made it shoot up on my wishlist.

I'm amazed that there apparently was a backlash over the art style?! I think it looks great but it's especially odd considering Battletoads has always been cartoony/stylized so I'm confused as to why people got soured on THAT aspect of the game. Oh well, looking forward to snapping this up some time in the future for some saturday morning cartoon goodness.

The old game looked cartoony too that's not the problem.
The problem is that it looks like a toddler drew it while the old game didn't.
Old game still had a more mature look to it and looked like an actual adult made it.

lol. Had an XBOX controller paired to PC and that's another thing I absolutely love about xbox games on PC is that you can switch between controls seamlessly. Just pick up the controller and start playing with it. :)

Not going to lie, Battletoads deserved better than this. If you're going to revive a cherished IP like this, you need to go big and make sure the quality lives up to the name. This just isn't it. I'd love to have seen Moon Studios tackle this franchise. But i don't think MS is smart enough to even approach them for something like this.

MS/Phil should get a lot of flack for this. People should not accept the "well it's a gamepass game" to excuse mediocrity. This should not be defended by even Xbox fans.

Just installed it and played the first level to completion. Really tired right now so I am about to go to bed but... the audio is pretty poor in this game. The writing is also equally poor. I am not a fan of the art style but I do appreciate the animation. As it seems the animation is the only thing that they really put time into. The game felt really easy but maybe it is because I played on the first level and not battletoad difficulty so we will see. So far this is a 6/10 on my initial impression. Will def play more later.

A few reviews I've watched or read indicate the actual beat'em up stages are fairly good, just too short and not enough of them. Riddled with mini games and puzzle levels. Is this pretty much true?

It's sad that the arcade version released on the Rare Replay looks infinitely better than this version. God I really wanted to love this game but, as is typical of Microsoft lately, they just seem to fuck up a sure thing. That 1st reveal instantly turned me off. And I was the biggest fan of the NES version, with one of my greatest achievements as a young fella was finishing Battletoads many times on my NES.

The beat em' up stages are at the start, and reuse a ton of the same content. Everything else is padded minigames and a couple boss fights.

It's padded to hell and back: one stage has you playing the same minigames 6 times in a row to fix your ship. There's also awful platforming levels, and spaceship levels that make coop impossible.

I get that, criticisms against it's length is a thing but SoR4 was also extremely short with no alt routes outside the retro time traveling. Beat em ups are always too fucking short.

Yeah , it appears we have a lot of people that really don't understand the genre . Because you are correct. The length is pretty standard across the board for the beat em up games.

Why is Days Gone all over this thread? People were talking about it in the first few pages now I go to the last and it's still Days Gone everywhere.

Imagine being so desperate for ammo against "the other side" that you have to compare a 3 hours cartoon beat em up to a huge zombie open-world epic of 50+hours just because their metacritic is close.

The controversy with Days Gone score was SJW-related so bringing it up here to prove a point with Battletoads is totally irrelevant.

Ha, it is funny how people who actually bothered to play the game here are enjoying it (most at least). It is fine for what it is and it definitely took me a bit more than 3 hours to complete it, because some mini-game levels gave me trouble. I don't think it is shorter than Streets of Rage 4, but it's definitely more fun, because of humor and faster, more frantic pacing during the fights.

Seriously! Why are guys so hung up on fucking scores!? If you like what you are playing then review score is irrelevant. The game is already out, you either liked what you played or didn't, whats the point arguing over the score now!?
What's this thread for if not for discussing your own experiences in relation to the reviews?

That's not why this thread went to shit.

Perfect for game pass
Agreed. I would never have given this a second glance if it weren't for the excellent GamePass. As it stands I had it pre-installed and ready to go and overall I was pleasantly surprised. I can understand the mixed reviews though, I think some people won't get the humour. It's like Rare appreciates that the Battletoads are a rubbish Ninja Turtles knock off and treats it as such with the appropriate humour which centres around the fact that they are naff and forgotten about.

It's an unusual game but I like that because it's a break from the usual formula that we have come to expect.

IGN are so ridiculously pro bias these days.... 'oh a working game on Xbox..... 8/10'

Literally no credibility... how many times will they mention Game Pass on Beyond! this week?

When the meta score settles around 7.5, you’re going to be the one looking biased and frankly silly for getting so invested in a review of a game that’s on a platform you don’t care about, it’s like you want these games to fail just because they’re on Xbox, it’s really pathetic. We wouldn’t be having the same discussion if this was on the Nintendo Switch or PS4, in fact, if a beloved Sony or Nintendo franchise scored unfavorably, there will be threads dedicated to just defending the game, but the exact opposite happens with Xbox games, you come into the actual review thread to bash Xbox, Phil and Xbox fans, we've seen it first hand.

Well my problem really was just with IGN, I have no issue with the Meta.... as I explained I had just watched 'Beyond!' their PlayStation podcast which seemed to mention Game Pass as much as any actual PS games and then I read their review.....

I also watched a couple of their XBox pieces this week and it seems like they are living in a different world.

Maybe you're right though and I am too hard on BT because it's an XBox game....

It's such a shame the reception of games this days has resulteded into a numeric definition. That account for all games, not just MS games.
Of course Battletoads has its flaws. So far however I'm having a lot of fun with it.
It's a fun game with flaws. But going by the narrative of this thread it's a POS.
Such a shame.

I have to say I think the game looks great too. I understand some people hate the art style but I think it absolutely nails the early 90s Nickelodeon look it's clearly going for. The animation is superb and probably the most impressive 2D I've seen since cuphead. Lots of people seem to be letting their hatred for the style cloud any appreciation for the technical prowess on display.

The soundtrack is excellent too and definitely gives 90s metal/power rangers vibes.

Im enjoying the mini games too at the moment so hopefully that continues.

The only complaint I had about it was that Pimple's arc gameplay was a little boring but the payoff was absolutely worth it

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I watched David Jaffe stream this last night and he was having a blast. It looked pretty fun *Shrug*.

I guess every game needs to be AAA tear-jerker oscar bait now.

I'm not a huge fan of the game so far, but I concur.

Every game doesn't need to be a massive focus tested game. It's an open market and the fact we can get games from every avenue is something I appreciate as a gamer.

Clearly a lot more people are more into the dick measuring AAA libraries vs enjoying games.

But I digress.

Gamingbolt:
“Where the game is impressive without caveats is in the combat front, it’s deceptively easy, but it racks on layers upon layers of complexity, slowly introducing the player into all sorts mechanics and moves, without ever overwhelming them.

Between the combos you can execute with one character, the ability to tag in or tag out any character you want at any time you want, this actually helps extend your combos further, and the extremely well differentiated enemy types, each of whom require different strategies to take down... seriously, there is more enemy variety in the first act of battletoads than many games have in their entirety, period! You’re basically guaranteed, deep, engaging brawler combat throughout the game.”

Summing up there negatives, it looks like the missing online co-op is what’s hurting the scores, great game, well executed gameplay mechanics and lots of local coop fun, but missing online coop which will hopefully be added later.

There you go SonyGaf, the missing online co-op is the reason, nothing else is wrong with the game, you may go in peace now.

Some people are talking about their experience. If there's an air of bemusement, it's because a perfectly solid game is getting trashed by people who will never play it.

Take out all the people saying that 7 is somehow a rubbish score and that Microsoft is dead and buried, or that Gamepass is the devil, and this thread would've been much shorter and much higher quality.

C'mon. 90's Dark Queen is cringe worthy. I loves some hot female characters, but that is over the top. I love the art style and feel comfortable playing it with my 10 year old.

The sad truth is, that the combat in the game is a bit more varied and fun than that Streets of Rage 4 game, the game has a few more moves you can do.

That 3rd level was really soul crushing though, not because it was hard but because it wasn't fun and it was too long, I didn't need a 5-10 minute "racing towards the screen avoiding obstacles" level in a game in 2020.

Would think since the game changes up so much online multiplayer wouldn’t work. Besides the beat em up parts how would I do the rest?
