Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus trailer (PC/XB1/PS4, Oct 27th, idtech6), season pass

I suppose that depends on your definition of "new". It's a modified id Tech 5 rather than the fundamental overhaul that Carmack had in mind back in 2008.

Didnt one of the lead CryEngine guys took over als lead renderer programmer after Carmack left? Forgot his name, Tiago Souza or something. I think DF had a great talk with him on Doom; dude seems legit. While I'm not doubting Carmack's vision, I think they made some good calls with id tech 6 so far.

So excited. TNO was one of my favourite FPS's in recent memory and I hope this game lives up to it (Still need to play Old Blood though). Can't wait.

This looked amazing.

I went and rebought New Order (and TEW) because of this. Never beat it. Never remembered why I didn't.

I remember struggling with the fact that the games story was so serious, almost thinking it was, like, parody. I know better now though....

I like that you can mix and match duel wielding here, having a shotgun and a rifle up simultaneously seems super useful. Where before it was just + DPS & ammo at the cost of recoil. Plus those suit abilites seem really dope, especially if you have a dash/charge attack ability on cooldown. Also that new submachine gun looking thing looks fun.

I don't think forced moments of grumbling "profound" insights is great writing!
That's not all there was to the writing though. What about a love story where the characters actually seem to feel affection for one another? Characters who feel remorse or even depression about having survived when someone else more deserving than them did not? The scene where racial segregation in the US is compared to the Nazi regime? Or when Frau Engel confronts you in the train cart? Or any of the incidental writing showing how life under the Nazi regime would be, like overhearing a conversation where a woman rattles out a neighbor for crossdressing?

Wolfenstein knew exactly how much and what to write to set the stage for a campy but grim story about Nazis on the moon, never underselling their evil. And always treating the friendly cast as characters instead of boring mission slot machines. That in my eyes certainly qualifies as great writing.

I remember a preview thread for the first game where they claimed TNO would have Naughty Dog-quality cutscenes. I swore up and down in the thread that it wasn't even possible for a meathead Wolfenstein game.

I was fucking wrong.

Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay and The Darkness' voice acting still hold up, so I never had any doubts that the writing + performances would be great, but the visual flourishes on the cutscene side were very unexpected. Once I got to that time lapse scene in TNO with BJ in the chair with everything passing him by, I knew I was in for something special.

They're actually way more playful than Naughty Dog. I've never seen a shot like the one I mentioned with the chair in a game before. Having it hit the camera and then shoot the conversation with it blocking most of the screen is an interesting choice. Then they cut to a super low angle of Brian Bloom killing it with those subtle head movements to sell BJ's anger. Good stuff.

Just saw the trailer. Holy shit! I can't wait to take down Frau Engel. From her role in the first game, I expect her to be as hateable a villain as Deathshead in this one (though running a concentration game in the first makes one pretty hateable already). Nice seeing Max Haus and most of the old faces in the trailer.

Can't wait to load up my guns and kill some Nazis. This is going to be fun.

The Darkness is one of my favorite games of last-gen and MachineGames still blew away my expectations for the narrative and cutscene direction for TNO.

Great trailer. I loved the last one (and to a lesser degree the DLC) so I'm all in on this.

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUU

Can someone explain the joke as though I were a child. :(

I have no idea what I just watched but this game looks completely fucking bonkers. I am normally not a big shooter fan but I am intrigued...

The shot where BJ kicks the chair and goes off on the guy is such a well directed scene. MachineGames cutscenes are so underrated.

They really are. I remember watching Blasko's awakening ("Nazi scum.") or the Kreisau Circle cutscene for the first time and thinking "holy shit, this is REALLY well directed and cut." I wasn't expecting that at all.

I'm also really hoping that Mick Gordon is back for TNC. He did an excellent job on Doom last year, but his TNO soundtrack is something else.

You should check out TNO if this trailer got you curious. This will be more of TNO, more or less, and TNO is a blast from gameplay to narrative.

I have watched the trailer four times now. Never usually get that involved in things at E3. The music, the premise, the style, the action, the FMV, the acid drop.

Incredibly excited to play this!

You know what, I'm totally in. They somehow made a great playing game where I actually cared about BJ's story and all the auxiliary characters. Can't wait to play this thing. I really need to play through The New Order again.

Blazkowicz must be like 50 here, then again he's using Caroline's suit here it seems.

He's got a weird metallic looking ring around his neck...and they showed that cat-monkey thing... perhaps his head has been transplanted to a new body?

I have to be honest, the first two games on the PS4 just didn't grab me for some reason. I know that they're very popular on here and I've tried playing a couple of times but I just couldn't get into them.

This looks very interesting though.

Maybe I should download them again and give them a final go, I do want to like them but it isn't really something that you can force. Does anybody recommend playing Old Blood or New Order first? Is one of them supposed to be better than the other?

The New Order is the one. The Old Blood is only for massive fans of that.

Play the New Order. You'll have to get past the opening stages before the game really "begins"

Basically, the last few people that the internet collectively rallied behind turned out to have some skeletons in their closet. Usually racist views.

Remember that one dude in a red sweater during the US presidential debates that everybody instantly turned into a meme? Into pregnant porn and had some racist views.

Wow, that live action sequence looks incredibly authentic, I thought it was actual footage from 60's TV lol

Looks like I need to finish the first game

Well, that simplified things. That was the first one, wasn't it?

I think a part of the issue with me was down to the look of the game, on a technical level it was impressive but it was just far too grey for me and because the gameplay didn't exactly hold my attention either I just really struggled to stick with it.

I'm downloading both now (93GB) and I'll give New Order another go.

It was the first one yes, The Old Blood was effectively DLC that got spun out into a standalone shorter campaign that kind of assumed you were already familiar with the combat so was less accessible.

The New Order is more cinematic and a traditional single player campaign.

Otherwise looks decent, but the facial animations are awful. Why can't they use some new tech to make them better? Haven't seen such robotic, plastic and lifeless expressions in an "AAA" game for a while.

I loved that the trailer didn't have that music with the bass boom every second. It was just a cool fun trailer to showcase the craziness of this game, which was very fun to watch.

Oh, in no way was I implying that id Tech 6 is a bad engine or would have been markedly better if Carmack were still around and had been able to execute his grand plan. Indeed, Sousa and co. ought to be commended for fixing up id Tech 5 as much as they have. THEBONDIGTY asked if id Tech 6 is a new engine and I answered as clearly as possible, nothing more. I assure you there's no subtext.

So you missed all pre-patch MEA memes, gifs and videos?

I appreciate that Machine Games were given the chance to reinvent Wolfenstein (and did a way good job), and recognize that this is perhaps a wee bit selfish, but I wish they weren't tied to Wolfenstein, or rather its adherence to evoking 90's shooters. Because while they're not bad at the shooty parts nowadays, they're real good at all of the other things they do. Also I don't gaf about 90's shooters, which is the selfish part.

It's basically like back in the Riddick days, or the The Darkness days...I guess like how it's always been with their games. The shooting is not what made those games interesting. Or what makes Wolfenstein interesting.

Regardless, this looks fucking rad.
