Devil Daggers |OT| DOOMed to fight in hell's arena (90s-inspired eldritch shooter)

Just got up about 30 minutes ago and fired up some Devil Daggers. On my second try of the day I managed to beat my previous best of 78 seconds by 14 seconds! I definitely could have done better but I'll accept that 92 and keep trying.

could've gone to 400 but made a dumb decision and circle strafed too sharp and went right into a normal skull. fuck.

Nice! I think that's the highest score so far on GAF? I really hate it when I get a 300+ run and die to something stupid on a relatively clear board, tilts the shit out of me

Huh, that's crazy! I was curious, so I yanked out my ethernet cable and fired up the game (so it couldn't connect to the leaderboards). The game ran normally. Maybe it's just a super random thing? Was it that same giant bone chandelier thing that you can see in the top runs at around 450 seconds?

Yeah, I checked and it was the same chandelier thing. Man, I wish I hadn't quit the game to see if it kept happening. The whole world was flashing reddish and the skybox had a lava/hellish texture applied. The monsters sometimes were just silhouettes against this background, very creepy.

I was planning to also unplug my ethernet and see if I could trigger it again. Really weird. I hope someone else can chime in on this stuff, else we might have to ask the dev.

Edit: Ok, I also tried unplugging my ethernet after the game boots, which results in the "Connecting to leaderboards" staying on screen. Did not trigger the crazy nightmare start. Maybe it is indeed random? When I had this happening I hit escape and started a new game, which again had this strange hell beginning. I then exit the game entirely, and since then it's been behaving normal.

I hope someone else turns up who can verify this. Until then I have seen something weird. Might've been a bug too, for all we know.

Was kinda disappointed for not controller support as my current setup ( I'm house sitting ) isn't very good for kbm, but I managed to set something decent enough up. Even after one game I love it hahah. Its so creepy and hectic. 44 seconds

Hah...

Those centipede tips helped a lot.

Anyone got any tips for killing spiders? I had one hide its weak point 3 times in a row which is fucking dumb.
Most important part is that it hides its weak point after you stop hitting it. As in, if you don't hit it for long enough it turns its skull away so you can't hit it anymore so make sure your aim is good enough to maintain a steady stream of hits. Other than that, shoot at it until it dies.

Makes fighting 8 of them a bitch.

They are the most unfun, shitty, ruinous thing in the game by far.

if you have the final upgrade, two well aimed taps kills the spiders from range. You can snipe them from afar quite easily, so you don't need to waste time running around the map to spray them down right underneath

78 sec lol.... this game....this fxxxx game!
It`s PERFECTION.

So, the dev is "Sorath" aka "M4ttbush".

Man i would loooove to see the next DOOM/QUAKE/HEXEN/HERETIC
with those visuals & sound design.

It's a three-man team, one of which worked on Dustforce and Spire. Explains why the movement is so good :p

I can consistently dispatch the spider now but I just always get swarmed and killed from behind by something around the 70 second mark.

My best run is actually 97 seconds where I basically ran around like a chicken with its head cut off and never even killed the spider.

I've been loving this so much, actually thought "a game like this hasn't captivated me since Dustforce...". Makes sense! Wish I could buy it more than once. $5 is a steal.

I am so terrible at this game. This game is not for me. I have troubles with the first three waves of flying skulls. I got to the first spider twice.
I've been playing FPS games for like 25 years+, but I've never been particularly good at aiming in them so it's hard for me to hit all the flying skulls. Hell, I use a trackball mouse. I don't think this game is for me ><

Although I do love the aesthetics. I'd be down to see the team do a campaign based not-1-hit-kill FPS in the Doom/Quake fashion.

What helped me get past that exact bump is getting consistent at clearing the stage in those first few waves, so basically the only problem you have at that time is the spider and the first batch of aggressive horned skulls from the dual spires. This means that you can easily strafejump around to avoid the skull biting your asshole while maintaining fire on the spider. And usually after killing the spider you get the first upgrade so taking out the skull before the next wave of them hits isn't too hard either.

Also, I used to make the mistake of bunnyhopping around the map clockwise when the spires actually rotate in that direction too, so it was common to miss weak points on the spires because they rotated away from me.

The developer should add a £5 "thank you" DLC item. Something aesthetic.

£3.99 is too little for what I've played.

Oh, of course. I just want to have some fun, play with some light, friendly competition... so I take a look at the leaderboards after a couple tries getting comfortable and my friends list basically consists of a bunch of fucking Devil Dagger MLG noscoping 420 pro savants

Bought it and played for an hour straight, got to 122 seconds. Went from 68->122 seconds, so I'm pretty happy with that run. After killing that first spider at around ~70 seconds it was pretty smooth sailing for the next 30 or so, right after you get the upgrade. Then it was like another 10 seconds of running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to buy a few precious seconds when I knew I was done for.

$5 is a steal, jeez. But it was the right price to get this game the kind of attention it deserves.

What sold me on the game was Brad Shoemaker describing it as "first-person Geometry Wars" and he was exactly right. Just my kind of thing.

I haven't had a chance to try and improve my score since I've been traveling for work, but it bums me out that this thread is so small compared to the SUPERHOT thread. I know they are different games but they came out at basically the same time and they both offer a fresh tilt on FPS.

This game still has it's teeth sunk firmly into me.

Can I add you on Steam? I need a few more people to compete towards on my friends list, since I'm top by a wide margin.

Sure thing, quote this post

Made it to 450 yesterday, 500 is gonna be a stretch but I think once I get that I'll stop. Just need that cheevo

I'm still debating on what's the best soundtrack to go along with this. Fast/frantic/rhythmic electronic music (as I prefer for most score attack games), or some rough metal to go along with the Doom-ish satanic theme and rest of the soundscape.

What are y'all listening to while Devil Daggering?

I think listening to any music is super counter-intuitive for this game honestly. The sound design cues and using it to effectively kite enemies around is so important to surviving longer.

This is my game of the year so far. I had a pretty dramatic boost in enjoyment after I started listening to music with a beat while playing. Turns out I can play better half zoned out. Still only at about 370 seconds though...

I'm mostly listening to Disclosure while playing. Anything with a slow-medium paced beat that keeps me calm while everything is going to shit during a run

Finally got past 500 seconds last night, amazing feeling. Not sure how much more I'll play since my goal was just to get the achievement, but man what a game.

Finally. This is definitely my second GOTY just short of The Witness. I just can't stop playing it. Too bad I keep pushing leaving too many pylons alive and dying like an idiot way too often.
