NeoGAF Voted: Most Anticipated Games of 2016

I'm also surprised at how high Horizon is, beating Zelda, Mass Effect, FFXV and Dark Souls 3. Expectations are high for this game and I guess thats because of its promising reveal and gameplay trailers.

just taking a look at the list

1. uncharted 4: you were a worthy foe.
2. persona 5: looking forward to this next year.
3. horizon: looks pretty cool
4. zelda: looking forward to whatever they do to it on nx.
5. dark souls iii:
6. m4ss effect: i'm kind of exhausted by this series after nothing making sense or mattering at all.
7. the last guardian: i want to believe
8. final fantasy versus xiii: nope.
9. deus ex: mankind divided: maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. basically, it's made up of two separate words — "mank" and "ind." what do these words mean? it's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
10. no man's sky: i really wish the developer the best. i think this might have been too hyped too early and will basically be 2016's spore.

honestly though, i'm looking forward to persona 5, zelda, and keeping my fingers crossed on the last guardian. i liked deus ex: human revolution too, but the sequel is going to be a little more dependent on my schedule. 2016's going to be a good year.

I have a feeling a lot of people is going to be disappointed in regards to Horizon.

It's one of my most anticipated titles, but I'm also a little apprehensive. I think it will be fun with generally very good core gameplay, but I fear the story and characters may lack, and it might be a bit typically open world repetitive with too many collectathon type missions.

7/10 from my list made this list although the orders slightly different for me :)

1. Persona 5
Last guardian
Dark souls 3
Dishonoured 2
Deus ex
Mass effect
Naruto
Xcom
FfXv
Doom

2015 was the only year i disliked in games, but 2016 is looking i credible, pretty much every game on that list i want.

I don't consider basic, contextual punch or kick as melee. Now admittedly I don't follow the game's development very tightly, so if there is an actual melee combat system in place, forget what I said.

We don't know anything about the melee of the game, so you drawing conclusions based on nothing confused me, that's all.

This, I just can't see the fuss

Agreed, maybe at this point, i think im just done with open world and crafting / collection in games for a while.
Some of the art looks great though, and i do hope it does well, if only cause i feel its pretty uncommon to have console flagship studios develop their own IPs in recent years.

Don't know how Horizon: Zero Dawn is being that anticipated. Action RPG with no melee combat...bleurgh

Pretty sure in one of the interviews somewhere it was mentioned it does feature melee combat. She even has a sword/spear. I'd imagine they just haven't showed it off yet. I mean, it features in the weapon cycle. I doubt she carries such a weapon only for one hit kills or basic usage.

I still remember Rico.

Don't disappoint me Guerrilla!

Wow, I can't believe we placed so highly. Thanks so much for all the votes. We're such a tiny team and your support means a lot.

I'm so excited for people to finally play it!

Totally well deserved, man.
Can't wait for Firewatch.

That Sony-heavy top. At least Zelda got on there. Also, nice to see Final Fantasy still have some hype left after that XIII-debacle.

Glad to see Project Setsune, Star Ocean 5, and Dragon Quest VII ar respectable places. Had those in my top 10. Persona 5 has quite the hype on GAF and I'm somewhat shocked considering how almost 10 years ago Persona 3 was a sleeper hit amongst AAA games like Mass Effect 1.

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!
What a great year it is going to be! I am so excited!

I didn't vote for Horizon Zero Dawn despite being really impressed with the E3 reveal. It actually showed gameplay unlike the 1886 devs but for some reason I feel it may end up being what 1886 was for linear games but to open world games, by that I mean bog standard in every way imaginable. I put Guerilla in the same league as RAD (before 1886 release). I do genuinely want this game to deliver so I won't get myself invested in it like 1886. That way if it sucks, it sucks and I don't care but if it's good, it will be a pleasant surprise.

I have a feeling a lot of people is going to be disappointed in regards to Horizon.

Combine Guerilla's track record with some substantial open-world fatigue, and I'm more than a little wary of it. I also don't think it's even coming out this year anyway.

I was expecting Uncharted and Persona to battle it out for first place, and Zelda on third, but I completely forgot Horizon. 2016 is going to be great if all of this pans out.

That's a big if though.

If it comes out this year, it's gonna be an just ok open world action RPG thing, but very pretty and the writing will be terrible. Zero faith in Guerilla Games to do anything great. Not The Order bad, but just unremarkable in all ways outside the visuals. There will be another GAF thread about how sick of open world collecting and crafting we are.

I'd have a bit more faith personally. Fallout: New Vegas' lead writer is on this, as well as quite a few game and quest designers from CDPR among other studios. Good signs.

I bookmarked this post to always remind me why I should be excited

Hopefully they tell their story better. Guerrilla Games got way too cute in their chapter transitions in Killzone:Shadowfall and the story was just stilted and badly paced.

Game should be in good hands :

- John Gonzales (Lead Writer for Fallout: New Vegas) and dialog writer who previously worked on Shadow of Mordor ( Nemesis system ) joined the writing team ( https://nl.linkedin.com/in/johnrgonzalez )
- They hired CD Projekt Red quest designers and other experienced RPG developers
- Lead cinematic artist/cinematic director of The Witcher 3
- A freelance writer from Blizzard joined the GG
- A game designer who worked on Elder Scrolls Online joined the GG
- And several creature artists and game designers who worked on Medieval RPGs
- in size and scope it will be comparable to Witcher 3

Half of the games I voted are on the top 10. Seems like many of the voters have a similar taste in gaming with me. Good to see a smaller game like Firewatch in the top 20.

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda - [6]
2. ReCore - [44]
3. Quantum Break - [15]
4. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - [9]
5. Gears of War 4 - [26]
6. Doom - [32]
7. Tacoma - [74]
8. Inside - [145]
9. Scalebound - [19]
10. Cuphead - [43]

Honorable Mentions:
No Man's Sky - [10]
XCOM 2 - [18]
Hellblade - [96]
Below - [84]
Adr1ft - [98]

It's always interesting to see how my list compares to Gaf. Not a single game I listed is in the Gaf top 5, though going back I'd maybe add Horizon to my honorable mention list. Plus, other then maybe hearing the titles before, I really have no idea about Zero Time Dilemma or Fire Emblem Fates; so I'm surprised to see those so high.

It's really interesting to see the ranking of the many indie games releasing this year, some are much higher then I would've guess (Firewatch), and others much lower (Hellblade. Tacoma)

Edit: Also noticed from the list, that at least from a games perspective, a lack of (high ranking) VR titles. It will be interesting to see the adoption rate, without any "system seller" anticipated titles.

Nice list overall, but people think Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last Guardian will be 2016 games?
Whether or not people believe they are doesn't change whether or they actually are. This voting was for games announced for 2016.

While you're at it, include Zelda Wii U in that sentence as well.

In my opinion:

Horizon - almost definitely 2017, or at least not 2016. They're still hiring people for the game I think.

TLG - I'd put good money on 2016. They waited a long while to re-reveal it, I have to imagine they're decently sure they can ship it in 2016.

Agreed on all counts.

I just realized that Ace Attorney 6 is #46, with DanganRonpa 3 being many places above it. What the hell, y'all, the Ace Attorney games are superior in every way! Besides, Danganronpa 3 will get its time to shine in next year's list because there's no way a western release is this year!

Hah. I'm likely in for 5 of the first 10, but then you have to go all the way down to 199 (Obduction) before the next one I'm likely to play any time soon. Not enough time for gaming. :(

This isn't a western only release voting/results thread.

A game still counts even if it's releasing for only one region.

And superior in every way seems to be a subjective standard, yes? I can assure you DanganRonpa has a better sadistic teddy-bear, which makes your statement objectively false. :-D

I guess nobody has any faith at all that this is a holiday 2016 release; which is unfortunate.

They haven't even hinted it as a 2016 release plus there is 2.8 releasing this year.

Here is the list filtered for games that will or might have VR support. (Let me know if I missed any) I think once more people have tried PSVR these titles will bubble up more. But for now it seems like Sony should do whatever they can to make No Mans Sky VR happen.

10. No Mans Sky
38. Gran Turismo Sport
56. Dreams
70. REZ Infinite
77. Star Citizen: Squadron 42
81. Dead or Alive Xtreme 3

I can agree with half of those top 10.

No interest in Persona, not confident in Final Fantasy, still confused on No Man's Sky, Deus Ex hasn't convinced me it'll be anything but mediocre, and Horizon looks beautiful, but I have no faith that Guerrilla Games can deliver after being burned so hard at the PS4 launch by Killzone.

Uncharted will deliver, because of Naughty Dog. Zelda will deliver because I've never been disappointed with a 3D Zelda title (and I kinda expect this will be why I buy the NX). Mass Effect Trilogy was an awesome experience, so I suspect Andromeda will follow. Bloodborne hooked me on FROM's capabilities, so Dark Souls 3 is very exciting. The Last Guardian can't be bad, right? Right!?

I have a feeling a lot of people is going to be disappointed in regards to Horizon.

Based on what? The game itself, or the release date?

Regarding release date, as of right now, it's due 2016. Not much we can do, but hope it comes out, and deal with it if it gets delayed.

Regarding the game's quality, well, you can say the same thing about any new IP.

Why should anyone be less concerned about games like Scalebound, Quantum Break, and especially Recore?

I'd have a bit more faith personally. Fallout: New Vegas' lead writer is on this, as well as quite a few game and quest designers from CDPR among other studios. Good signs.

Exactly, people do forget the GG are investing huge effort and talent in Horizon!
Love how they talk about track record, given that all KZ games have sold millions of copies, have their dedicated communities and in my personal opinion of course, the KZ franchise has the most solid gameplay when it comes to FPSs since Quake 1,2 and 3!
