The New JL Trailer is Everything Wrong With DC's Dark Movie Universe

WTF is this shit? It's full of humor and non existencialism, do people really want every movie to be Guardians of the Galaxy? Disgusting. This is just clickbait.

Well yeah, one looks like a tv show and the other like a movie.

Eh, I'd say one looks like a movie, the other looks like an overly-produced VFX demo film. To each their own.

I particularly don't mind the dark asthetics, that doesn't really make or break a movie to me, as long as they embrace the comicbook sillyness/ fantastical elements, regardless of color levels.
This is something that the Nolan movies failed to capture, in part due to the "grounded" rule going on. We would never see the likes of Poison Ivy,Manbat,Clayface in a Nolan movie which is a shame considering how good the scripts were.
I don't get this. It wasn't trying to capture those things, so it wasn't really a failure to do so.

You shouldn't fault something for not doing what it's not trying to do. That's like saying because The Road was post-apocalyptic, it should have had more Max Max-style elements.

DC needs to realize that not every film needs the same tone and you can still have a connected universe. A Superman film doesn't have to have the same tone of a Batman film. At the end of the day those two characters can still appear together in a Justice League film.

Seems like the success of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has had a direct impact on the tone of every DCEU film.

Copying Marvel is not the answer.

I feel like batman v superman and man of steel were establishing that the core of this take is grimdark and serious.

Suicide squad was probably once a pretty decent movie with a weird ass tone, and it was already pretty different than the other movies. I have real high hopes for WW

I'd be fine with batman being a more relaxed guy until shit gets real, and superman being morally grey so the Injustice movie adaptation can happen

Also I prefer the visual direction of the DCU and the way their characters act, everyon in marvel is cracking jokes like Spider-Man nonstop and I'm not a huge fan of the art direction.

Can't a man just unabashedly love to desaturate and blue the shit out of everything?

I thought Sucker Punch was garbage, but it did drastically change scene to scene to separate the realities or dances or dreams or whatever the hell was happening.

Yeah, this is why I like Snyder so much because he's willing to embrace the kind of weirdness that made people walk away from comics in the first place. Nolan was concerned with how to make Batman work in a crime story and he largely succeeded with movies like The Dark Knight. And then when he tried to get fantastical in Rises, it ended up kind of backfiring on him. The ambition of the story couldn't work under the rules he had already created so stuff like a punch to help fix your back ended up feeling too silly and contrived. Mind you, I adore all those movies, but I can see how that version of Batman clashes with the popular depictions of the character.

Nolan's Batman is a little more than a guy in a suit who knows some karate.

Besides TV shows looking great these days, what does 'it looks like a TV show' mean?

Does every movie outside the DCEU look like a TV show?

The JL trailer was way more entertaining than the Homecoming trailer IMO

The last thing I'm worried about are visuals when it comes to a Zack Snyder joint

DC really, REALLY needs to take a look at Marvel's movies and realize that they can lighten up a bit

Why do they need to do what the MCU is already doing? Why do people want MORE of the same? Why is it so bad to have different options? We already have 15(?) MCU movies with more on the way. What's so terrible about a handful of comic book movies that do something different?

People rightfully criticized The Avengers as looking like a TV show, which to be fair, is an issue with that particular film that probably stems from Whedon's history in television. People who don't understand anything about cinematography took that to mean NOT using crazy color grading and extensive stylized CG in every scene is television quality cinematography.

It's not darkness I care about, it's putting out a good fucking movie. The Dark Knight is bleak as hell, but it shits all over the tripe that Zack Snyder calls "movies".

I think when people say that they're referring to the lighting in the films. Most TV shows usually lack any dramatic lighting. Everything is too lit. that's probably where the "looks like a TV show" criticism comes from.

It's weird that he only does that for the superhero stuff.

Dawn of the Dead and 300 actually had variance of color and saturation.

Well for 300 he really has traded blue for yellow. DotD is really the last (only?) Snyder movie to appear somewhat colorful. After 300 he just fell in love with abusing digital color timing (particularly teal and blue) and never looked back.

What's amzing LionPride is that out of every article you could have posted talking about the trailer, this is the one you picked. There's another shitty article on Polygon, how you post that one too.

Your bias is always showing.

It's a shame because, while very rough, I felt Man of Steel held a lot of promise.

BvS magnified he mistakes of MoS even more, to the disservice of any thematic goal it was working toward. Suicide Squad was a misstep in every respect.

Not the best track record. The entire universe feels rushed and sloppy.

Every time someone posts that "X DC movie" should be like Marvel, a pregnant female from an endangered species gets an abortion.

Don't get me wrong, I know he wasn't, that's why I mentioned the "grounded" rules, clearly Nolan had his own spin in mind he wanted to implement, and he accomplished that greatly.

The point I was making is that although they were well crafted movies, it's not what personally makes me tick regarding what I like about a comicbook movie. I like the more fantastical side of things in Snyder's movies, even if they have that subdued color palette.

Wtf? OP is just some dude on a forum, he's not a journalist or anything. He isn't obligated to be unbiased, everyone has their own biases.

You'll have to pardon LionPride. He has known the taste of being damaged.

Bronx Man with that classic Marky Mark shit. You're projecting too much dawg.

More jokes! More colors! Lighten up!

The problems with these movies are structural, it got nothing to do with that shit.

Yep. I like BvS but the problem here is the filmmakers and post production moreso than the tone. Logan done shitted on the game and that was probably the most bleakest major superhero film I've ever seen.

I'll gladly welcome more stuff like BvS if it's done better. Or on the other hand more stuff like spiderman 2.

There were lots of day scenes in BvS though. A few - spoilers for bvs:

1. The Africa scene where villagers were burned alive and Superman killed that guy
2. The courthouse scene where like dozens of people were incinerated by a bomb
3. Superman's funeral.

Lots? Those where 3, and literally 1 of them had any actual action. All 3 major actions scenes took place at night.

BvS being overstuffed, ugly trash with ruined characters made me appreciate MoS more, actually. At least that had Zod and his minions.

The color point gets a little tiring. Just turning the light up would not suddenly fix BvS.

Brooding heroes is also not a problem if it's executed right. Similarly do fun and jokes not mean it's automatically good. Im not sure why people assume Snyder would suddenly perfectly execute a jokey movie if he'd just try

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
The sun will come out when Superman does.

In time they will join you in the sun. They being the audience who had to suffer through the mediocrity that was BvS.
