Given how extremely well it sells, Switch will reach around 75 million units next year. I think it will surpass the Wii in its fifth year. Probably won't beat the DS. 155 million is crazy numbers no matter how you slice it.

Nintendo also has a couple of heavy hitters to close out the Switch with. BOTW 2, MP 4 and Bayo 3 could make for big splashes every year to 2023 when it's time to release a successor.

Luigi Mansion sales that low? I expected better. Game looked really great.

It's a Gamecube sequel. It's just there to pad out the library but it's not a big seller on its own.

If it weren't for supply issues Switch would probably be past the NES right now given COVID-19 demand.

Its insane. I can see the Switch hitting all-time top 5 in the coming years
Gonna depend on how well they continue supporting the system at the end of its lifespan. Even though the Switch is 3 years old, it still feels like it hasn't hit its stride with first-party content. The handheld nature of the system and the success of the Lite hints that they'll keep it alive for awhile a la Game Boy / DS / etc.

They really needed to get a $200 unit out there. Now they need to get it in the $120-150 range to truly allow the ol' 3DS line to be discontinued.

13 million for Animal Crossing...? I'm not knocking anyone who loves the series, but isn't it a cartoony life sim..? Nintendo really can market anything if has the Nintendo charm. I seriously don't get it.

And then straight up GOATs like God of War and the Witcher 3 can barely pass 6 mil? I must have been part of the hardcore niche for so long that I can't even relate to the casual crowd.

It's a miracle that Astral Chain passed 1m.

Glad that RingFit continues to sell. I wonder how much higher it would be if it wasn't supply-constrained. :pie_thinking:

WiiFit sold 22m units over the span of 5 years. I'd like to see RingFit hit at least 10m.

Few minutes? Thats fast. I suffered like 20 hrs waiting for something to happen.
Nothing is supposed to happen. Animal crossing doesnt have a plot, or an objective (the loans are just a way to give you an incentive to continue playing), the whole point of the game is to do pretty much anything you want while building up your island. Its essentially the sims means minecraft.

Why do you think a cartoony life sim won't have a lot of players? People don't care that things are cartoon which is why a lot of mobile games and even console games are popular. Aspects of "sims" games include customization which is something again found in most mobile and console games and even gets people to spend millions of dollars on. The only thing you need to understand is "different strokes for different folks" i.e. people like different things. It's like saying you don't get why people like eating XYZ. Well, because they just do. If you don't like it that's great, not every one likes the same music, likes the same movies, likes the same porn or likes the same people.

Man that Animal Crossing is huge. I bought into the hype and gave up after few mins ..... too slow for me

I knew before it even came out I wouldn't like it. I bought Animal Crossing on 3DS when folks were gaga over that game and it just was so damn boring. That being said though I get it. I get why it is so popular. It is a really casual laid back game.

I mean yeah, I get the whole different strokes thing, but to me, life is already enough of a chore balancing work, family, home maintenance, hobbies, etc. It just blows my mind that there is a huge market to do all of those things virtually. That was really the point of my post; that there is a larger market to duplicate daily tasks with animal people as opposed to experiencing a cinematic story with engrossing world & gameplay.

It made me think about the different reasons people choose to play games. I've always thought it was the different experiences offered by developers, but this may not be the case for everyone.

When I play a game, I'm trying to hit pause on the duties of life, not start another one. But I've clearly struck a nerve and it was unintentional. If you could maybe explain the appeal of the games, rather than throw up the argument that essentially boils down to "opinions," then this could've been a more informative discussion.

Witcher 3 has sold nearly 29 million copies and God of War 4 sold at least 10 million as of last April.

Oh wow. I checked VG chartz and God of War was at 6.15 mil and 10 shipped. I thought that was different.

Witcher 3 data I saw could've just been PS4 sales. Thanks for the info.

...hate me...
I find this incredibly depressing...

Too many people who will give too much money for such outdated, underpowered hardware to such an undeserving company that treats its user base with such arrogant contempt.

This thing should be (well) below $200 by now.
This level of salt gives me life during these hard times. Keep it up buddy :D (y)

The game has its own vibes so this whole "cartoony life sim" doesn't mean anything

The game is good and works like a day in your life for everyday. Might not be appealing to you which is alright

Plenty of casuals find it appealing and it makes sense that it sold 13m. The majority doesn't find God of War and TW3 appealing

The internet doesn't represent anything from the major consumers. And by the way, TW3 sold 29m in total and I'm sure GoW reached 10m

What do you guys think the next-gen consoles will do to Switch sales? Could they slow down the Switch's momentum?

...lacks reading comprehension.
I don't understand the phenomenon myself

I think it mostly sells as a handheld. That market was always big and I never understood the appeal (even less so with mobile phones). I have a Switch since launch and the last year it got like 15 minutes of use with Baba is You.

It's called a sims game often because you are kind playing out a life of a character and doing real-lifeish things. But it's not like you are creating a second-life. It's a video game, it has dialogue with NPC that gives you benefits for exploring just like a lot of RPGs, it has item collection, objectives, unlockables, challenges and crafting for a sense of progression/completion. There's things you can do daily that reward with more things which you can use to customize and even show off. Which if you think about it people love customizing, it's in a way like painting except instead of paint you are using fake furniture/clothes. You can feel good you just created a cute little whatever or made your character look a way that makes you happy just like a lot of other games. Then you can even show it off to other friends and strangers; which is why this game is getting so popular, Twitter sharing. Also I'm sure the social aspect helps wtih this game, as a lot of people are playing with each other, sharing items, and helping each other have prettier towns. I would argue that for most people, if they wanted a cinematic story, they would just watch a movie or a TV show. Animal Crossing shares a lot of characteristics of other popular games, it just doesn't have a story and doesn't really feature gameplay that entertains people by allowing them to overcome difficulties/challenges..

I pointed out that people like different things because your post seemed to imply that people shouldn't like Animal crossing because of it's life sim. And seemingly implied that only reason people are buying the game because it's charming and Nintendo is good at marketing; which arguably further implies that Nintendo "tricked" people into buying something they shouldn't like. Pointing it out is also arguably something you need to do on the Internet (and in real life) because there are people that believe that their opinion is the objective standard for what is good or bad.

Great numbers, but it makes the (literally) empty release schedule after Xenoblade DE all the more baffeling. Corona isn't an excuse for the biggest software maker in the world to not have *any* big (new!) games announced past May.

PS: And Xenoblade 2 not having reached 2 million sold is a bummer. Must be super close.
Interestingly, Xenoblade DE is outpreordering TLOU2 on Amazon currently and has been doing that for much of this month so far.

Honestly? I am. It sure Nintendo makes games that are not good let alone great. All of them are worth spending time to learn and master their mechanics and have fun in the process :).

Whichever team made BoTW and EAD behind Galaxy/Oddysey/DKJB etc - best teams at Nintendo. Skyward Sword was awful though. BotW amazing love it, but mastered it a long time ago

It's not great.
They have to sell around 30 million more units to equal the 3DS and WiiU install base.
By the time they do that, it will be at least the end of 2021 which would give the Switch only one more year until the Switch 2.
They totally failed to expand their user-base.
The 3DS is 9 years old, though.

And as we saw with the Wii, post-launch sale surges are indeed possible. Like I mentioned before, I think a Switch model aimed at the $120-150 market served by the 3DS would do wonders.

What an immensely dumb take.

There was a huge overlap of users between Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo is selling more software than with both of those combined.

Nintendo reigns supreme and anytime they aquire a new gimmick (motion plus, joy cons etc.) having those gimmicks gets them these kinda sales.

There’s really nothing gimmicky about the switch tbh. Waggle controls? Yes. Ability to dock or go portable? Nah, that’s just an awesome feature I wish every console could have (but I understand why they don’t)

It's the combined sales of it's worst selling handheld console and worst selling home console, and the Switch is not going to beat it by much,
That's not good regardless, when supposedly the Switch is to replace both.
And there's plenty of overlap with the Switch and Switch Lite owners being from the same household.
Also, WiiU had an immensely high attach rate too with 720p games on disc that cost $60 USD.
