We know for a fact that based on the hardware itself, PS5 will inherently run PS4 bc games better than Series X runs Xbox One games. The PS5 GPU literally "pretends" to be the PS4 GPU while Series X is probably doing something with virtualization and on top of that adding things like HDR.

Games tweaked to take specific advantage of the hardware will more often than not go in Series X favor. It's physics.
Holy shit this is the dumbest post I've read on the internet all day, quite an accomplishment!

On topic, this upgrade is fantastic on Series X, looks a lot better and sharper, and smooth 60fps. Impressive stuff.

digital foundry found 1260p apparently btw.
Can you share with us?

Because the patch notes says they disabled DRS on PS5 it is not possible to have resolution different from 1200p.

Does it upgrade the game to have the PS5 label on PS5 or is just PS4 BC?
If you mean if it is a native PS5 game with a new game id? Nope... it is the PS4 version in BC using PS5 boosted hardware.

I think he meant that the DRS on PS4 Pro could go up to 1260p
I also believe that PS5 could go higher than just 1200p

Nope you are wrong.
BC games on xbox can be patched in whatever way the developer wants, it's basically the same as upgrading a PC and increasing the settings as high as the hardware can handle; on PS5 they are limited to unlocking the framerate (up to 60fps only) and/or pushing the resolution to the upper limit of the original PS4/Pro game.
Launch games, like Assassins Creed Valhalla, are native PS5 games and have full access to the hardware power and devs can do whatever they want with resolution and framerate and other settings.
You missed the point.

The games we are playing at the moment are just cross gen games with performance patches.

so you acknowledge that the devlopers can change the resolution? you are aware that this is literally just a piece of text in an .ini file right?
so that means they can change that text in that .ini file

ergo this means that they can arbitrarily change the resolution of games when playing on Ps5.

if you still don't get that you're wrong now the you can't be helped. there are a lot of people on this forum with highly limited understanding of technology, programming etc. so it doesn't surprise me.

but you are wrong, verifiably so.

Jedi Fallen oder = Different resolution and post processing settings as PS4/Pro
SW Squadrons = Different settings for lighting

this disproves your statement that developers can only change the framerate cap as we have games that do more than that.
They can change the resolution within the limits of the last gen version which is what I've been saying since the very start but you can't seem to get into your head or are just acting dumb on purpose.

You want to bring up DF? Fine here is Richard Leadbetter on two different ocassions talking about how BC is handled differently on PS5:

And this Squadrons lighting enhancement thing you keep bringing up. We don't know shit about it. It is literally the only example of a developer claiming to have changed a graphical setting on a PS4 BC game on PS5, and there are no details on what it means or how it works, other than that vague bullet point in their patch notes. Has anyone looked closely at these lighting effects to see in what way they are improved? There is no other example of a developer making such a change to a PS4 game running on PS5. So either it's not what you think it is, or they are the only studio to have managed to pull this off for some reason.

That is not a meaningful distinction. A game is either native code or not, that is the crucial point here. The cross gen thing doesn't factor in this discussion.

Why are they did not mentioned resolution increase for Series S? It is quite massive from what I saw.

But its a meaningless distinction for us as users. And clearly on Xbox it doesn't matter for the devs when enhancing old games.

Game devs like Respawn have the ability to patch the PS4 game or make a PS5 version, its just a decision for them in terms of time.

There's nothing actually stopping Respawn from giving the PS5 the second higher res 30 Hz mode that is on XSX. Its clearly just not worth their time. And Sony is clearly not making it as easy for devs as this is on Xbox.

Sony isn't doing anything to stop them or make it difficult. It is a fundamental limitation of their platform and API. If devs or publishers want to spend the time and money, they can make a native version. Insomniac did it with Spider-man Remastered but they charged money for it. A next-gen remaster of Jedi Fallen Order might not be received very well.

lol how? these are games from last gen with last gen shaders and graphics and cant even run at native 4k
Nah. 4K is too tough. They would have to stick to low settings essentially if they want to push that many pixels. There's a reason UE5 demo was done at 1440p 30fps. ;)
I'm not sure a lot of these games we see at the moment are utilising the new new stuff in the consoles yet. For example, we don't know how far Sony's Kraken decompression system goes - it would surely help in delivering 4K assets correctly if utilised to its limits for example. Nor have we really seen the new geometry engine in action. I know Microsoft are planning to roll out DLSS on the XSX as well...

I'm not saying for sure that these all point to there definitely being the opportunity to run native 4k, just saying that we don't know just yet how far these features can help realise it.

I wish they would have changed the fade to white screen when meditating to a different color. Playing the game in hdr with a TV over 1000 nits is always blinding. Always have to keep closing my eyes or look down to avoid the blindness that ensues.

Nah man you're misunderstanding me. There's nothing stopping Sony from letting games with 120 Hz modes or the next gen versions of Miles Morales simply be called enhanced PS4 games.

Users see Rainbow 6 Siege and Destiny 2 "native ports" on PS5 and think "oh cool its the PS5 version" and yet, they also see patches like Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone and think "oh cool its the PS5 version." Users see no difference.

Also, if Sony isn't to blame for the difficulties devs face on their platform, the who is? Those limitations are entirely up to Sony to keep that way or change.

Perhaps. I see no real difference between the 4K 60 version of Days Gone on PS5 versus the 4K 60 version of Miles Morales on PS5.

Both are 30 Hz PS4 games that got patched / "native ports" but to me its all the same shit. Sony just decide what can be labeled as a PS5 game in order to market the new machine.

If Bend Studio had wanted to put in ray tracing and 3D audio, I guarantee Sony would have made them call it a PS5 version instead of PS4.

All days gone is doing is a framerate unlock. Spiderman Remastered is a PS5 game because there are quite a few things in that game that aren't in the PS4 version.

That’s an insult to insomniac.

you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

tell me what you think that keeps developers from changing stuff on PS5 in BC games?
it isn't the code, clearly, as THEY LITERALLY HAD TO CHANGE SETTINGS in Fallen Order to have it run like it does. higher resolution for post processing effects and a completely different resolution setup, also the mode switcher in the options menu is gone so even the options menu is specifically changed for PS5.

developers clearly can change settings as we see here in this very game alone.

what resolution is rendered in the end only depends on a .ini file that cah be changed by literally opening it up in a wordpad window and typing in another resolution.

they disabled setuff (dynamic scaling), they upped the resolution of effects DRASTICALLY and they changed the options menu.

they can do all of this, no issue, but you seriously think they can't up the resolution... because... API... or what?

the only possible way what you say is true is of Sony themselves forbid developers from enhancing the resolution of games beyond the PS4 pro version, which would not only be extremely random but also fucking stupid.

there is no way in hell that it is a hardware or API limitation, and if you knew even an ounce about what you're talking you would know that.

also, if there was some magical piece of code that prevents upping res beyond PS4 pro... what they could do is simply put in a new mode on PS4 Pro that would run like shit on it, hide it so you can't turn it on... and then just fucking make the PS5 run the game in that mode.

we know they can make a specific PS5 Mode like they can make specific PS4 Pro modes, as we see... once again... in this very game, as it runs at 1200p60 with no mode selection in the options menu, which the PS4 Pro has.

So this gane clearly runs in a mode specifically made for PS5, that only PS5 can run it in... but according to you they can't go beyond 1200p ... explain to me how this makes sense?

explain to me what it is that keeps developers from going beyond PS4 Pro settings
....
....
even tho this game goes beyond with higher res post processing already AND WE KNOW that Squadrons has a better lighting model that was in the official patch notes of the fucking game
quote: "Improved visual quality and lighting on PS5"

since they didn't improve resolution, improved visual quality here should also mean better settings beyond the lighting

Its also a higher res and has improved character models and more.
Nope.

The only change is the unlocked framerate up to 60fps.
It probably run at higher resolution due the stronger hardware but that was not changed from Pro and there is no improved character lol

Had bought Fallen Order in January sales but didn't start it. PS5 is scheduled to arrive on Feb first week. Will wait to play on that

For XsX, like others I've been seeing 60fps in it's 1080p mode beofre the patch. Even after that patch it still says it's 1080p on the menu for perf mode...but patch claims 1440p. I was expecting 4k60 with DSR....this 12TFLOPS and the new cpu....all the juice can't be there for a minuscule res bump.

Now I wish some kind of patch for BF2 so it matches ultra settings of PC on these "next-gen" consoles.

I would like to refer you to my earlier post:

another case of people massively overestimating the hardware of next gen consoles.
let's take a look at the performance profile of this game, it's not very well optimised and had massive performance issues on every system.

on Xbox One X (6TF) it ran at 1080p with a framerate that ranged from 30fps to 60fps while barely ever holding anything above 45fps for more than a few seconds.
no on Series X (12TF) it runs at 1440p60fps and runs stable.

the performance increase in pixels per second here is way above 2x while the GPU power increase is exactly 2x (back compat games run in a compatibility mode where the GPU perfoms similar to a 12TF GCN gpu)

so you see that this is more than one woild expect here, and one reason it is more than you would expect is that a lot of scenarios were CPU bound on One X and the CPU boost on next gen is ridiculous to say the least.

the jump from 1080p to 1440p alone is a res bunp of 78%
afd to that that the One X version didn't cone even close to being 60fps aside from very rare moments and you have a pixel per second improvement of more than 200% on a GPU with 200% of the raw power.

single player game with no monetizing MP (and from EA) that's over a year old and gets an update. I'll take more of that please

This game (while incredibly buggy at launch on PC) was fucking great. Hopefully this and Squadrons are a sign of EA and Star Wars going forward, but I have my doubts.

So the "next-gen" PS5 patch bumps resolution from 1080p->1200p? It just adds 120 lines of resolution? No 4K?

That seems like a joke. It already ran at 1080p60 at launch on PS5.
1080p 60 yesterday.

1200p 60 today.

Played tonight and with the 120p difference it looks literally identical.

If I hadn't read about the patch, I wouldn't have ever known.

The SX version with performance mode turned off is looking really clean and as far as I can tell sticks pretty close to 4k. That’s all I wanted TBH and it looks like I got it. It is nuts how demanding it was for a last gen game though.
