Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots debuted in March 2005 on PlayStation 3 and has not been available on any other platform since then. Due to the above, many have thought that Sony paid some kind of exclusivity, but the reality is different and it happens that Metal Gear Solid 4 is exclusive to PlayStation 3 because Hideo Kojima did not want to make the port for Xbox 360 .

This was revealed thanks to Steven L. Kent, author of The Ultimate History of Video Games . For the second volume of this book, Kent interviewed former Kojima Productions developer Ryan Petton about Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and his history with Sony.

According to the former Kojima Productions member, Sony did not pay for an exclusivity on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots . In fact, what happened is that Kojima simply decided that he didn’t want to port it to Xbox 360, and it seems that Konami officials agreed with this decision.

The prevailing belief around the industry was that Sony must have secured an exclusive deal for the game. It wasn’t true. Had Kojima chosen to port the game to Xbox 360, his bosses would surely have approved the decision, but he wasn’t ready to make the jump.” – said Patton

WHY DIDN’T KOJIMA WANT TO RELEASE METAL GEAR SOLID 4 ON XBOX 360?

But why didn’t Kojima want to bring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to Xbox 360? At the moment the situation is not clear. However, it seems that it all has to do with the fact that the game is too big and that the Xbox 360 games came on DVD, which would have meant that the game would have had to be offered on a lot of discs.

This is believed because, in a 2013 interview , Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection would not come out on Xbox 360 because Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots never had an Xbox 360 version and the explanation is that his amount of information was “just very huge.”

I am sorry to report that an Xbox 360 version will not be released because an Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Solid 4 has not been released. To explain the situation, the amount of data in Metal Gear Solid 4 is just too huge,” Kojima explained.

So it seems that Kojima thought that releasing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on Xbox 360 was just too complicated. We’ll see if at some point Konami decides that it’s worth releasing this game on more platforms so it doesn’t get lost.

I always thought this was obvious when the hd collection came out? Honestly i dont blame kojima, ps3 is a fucking shitty console for devs, porting it from ps3 which had blu ray to 360 probs would of costed alot more then the whole game itself and it would more of likely would suffered on 360 just because of how confusing coding on ps3 is, not even bluepoint even attempted it

Kojima didn't want to be dealing with trying to fit 30GB of data on a 8GB disc.
That is 3 disc.
Some games had alot of disc's.

Plus didn't x360 and ps3 had internet?

He had alot of option. But opted out the easy way.

It explains why him and Konami had a fallout lately. You dont do stupid stuff like these, and miss out on those sales.

Then again it's Kojima. He lives in his own world.

How is that possible?
Is porting from ps3 to x360 that expensive?

No reason why it couldn’t have been ported to Xbox One though judging by the comments he makes. If it’s just a capacity issue, new consoles were using Blu-Ray in 2013.

Anyway, I finished it twice on PS3 and there’s no way I’m sitting through hours and hours and hours of those cutscenes again.

X360 had no hdd by default. It was mandated that on 360 games run off of the disc without a need for a HDD. 30GB isn't 3 discs it's 4 and even then it would be more since you need to duplicate data between them too and possibly change the structure of the game like Rage did.

Konami fell out with Kojima after MGSV which was multiplatform + PC. Nothing to do with missing out on sales.

If that is the case, then I can see why it's a hassle.

Apparently the 360 build they had ran better than the PS3 version too.

...
Not with image parity. The advanced precision features of the RSX and the FX like the octocamo - that was an SPU accelerated feature IIRC - weren't going to look like that on the 360. For a developer like Kojima, the 360 was a significantly weaker hardware platform by the things it was missing, not least the ability to have a final framebuffer bigger than 10MB.

Kojima appreciates fidelity, and is why he apparently still uses a HiRes Walkman daily for music while using an iPhone as his telecoms devices - IIRC from the KojiPro Death Stranding pre-release youtube video where the game goes Gold.

I dont think theres ever been a game made for the ps3 in mind that was ported over to 360 other then gta5, even that game was a mess on 360, ps3 was a beast of a console if someone knew how to make games on it which was barely afew, from my understanding ps3 was way different and harder to code then a 360, 360 was easier because it was close enough to a pc, so for them to port the game over would actually cost quite abit of time and money

Final Fantasy 13 and LA Noire were supposed to be PS3 only iirc.

You clearly didn’t play the game and didn’t own a console at that time…
It was even tedious on PS3 with the installing of the Blu ray disc
Plus we had this bash against Xbox in the game

This is pretty poor from him. If it had come to 360 there would be a high chance it would be playable on series x with a locked frame rate.

Probably the worst in the series anyway. The thought of having to watch those cutscenes again gives me shivers lol
MSG4 is worth it just for the intro!
War has changed
But yes a Xbox version would mean a Pc version could have been made too and yes it would surely come to the series x.

That makes total sense. Well done Kojima san! ❤️

Making games for the PS3 was apparently a nightmare, making games for the PS3 that worked on other consoles was probably some Freddy Kreuger shit.
The common belief, at the time, was that using the PS3 as the lead machine and then porting to Xbox was easier than the other way round. Never looked into the veracity of that but that was the view back then.

There’s a second volume of Kent’s Ultimate History? Well well.

Anyway, seeing that Kojima apparently predicts the future, he knew there’d be a “Kojima shot himself in the foot” meme if he made a 360 version.

tbh, back in 2008 japanese developers didn't like the X360 much, and would only support it if the parent company forced them to. Being on X360 exclusively in Japan meant selling out and massive drama from the fanbases, and in Kojima's case, he clearly disliked multiplatform at that point coming out of the PS2 era, MGS2 on Xbox didn't exactly run as it should and cost Konami/Kojima precious resources back then, and outsourcing Twin Snakes wasn't a result that Kojima loved. So it's normal that a title that was optimized for the PS3 seemed like a waste of time to do a conversion at that point, after all is said and done.

The solution would have been targeting both platforms from the beginning.

To his credit, MGSV was designed for X360 and PS3 from the ground and actually ran better on the Xbox 360, so I don't think he was against it due to being a sony fanboy even if he prefered Sony platforms. It was also the bigger market for MGS.

I think he should just have ported Metal Gear Online.
