Need for Speed: Payback revealed (NFS: Fast & Furious, Nov 10, PC/PS4/XB1) [Trailer]

I admit that an OK story isn't the worse thing to have in a racing game. I've finally gotten into The Crew since a sequel was announced for it and even as a cliche revenge story it give enough justification to keep wanting to do races.

...but I'm curious how well EA's going to do with this Fast and Furious knockoff story. Is it going to be filled with gimmick races where you have giant safes tied to the back of your car smashing into stuff? And if they are going that route, I wonder how meaty the single player will be, a couple of hours of high budget explosions and set pieces, or more traditional races and events to keep it lengthy.

This trailer didn't really hype me at all. Need to see way more before I have an idea of whether this might be good or not.

Right now I think I'm looking forward to getting info about The Crew 2 more than NFS at this point. Ubisoft usually does a decent job of improving on their series in their sequels, and if they can improve the visuals, make the car handling more enjoyable, add additional events types, and keep the big varied open world it could be something really impressive. An offline mode would be nice in TC2 also, but I can't say it bothered me playing through the first one. That wasn't what stopped me from buying the last few NFS's either.

How EA keeps thinking narrative based racing is the right direction for this series is increasingly a mystery to me. Is there really consumer feedback that exists that's like "More story. Arcade racing needs more story. Definitely."? Really strange.

Hmm what is wrong with a narrative? narrative is always great for single player campaign, you can still have all of your tracks and racing only now there will be some context to it all, even fighting games started to invest in a robust single player mode rather than just let you beat 10 opponents, see a one min ending cutscene and get to the credits, it adds a lot to the campaign and today people consider it a must (one of the main reasons for SF5 failure was the lack of single player content at launch), they even did it in FIFA (and Madden is next I suppose) which proved to be a big success, only natural that racing games would start copying this model.

Not sure what to take away from this trailer.

Lots of voice overs but no faces shown speaking. Is this all just voice-over in game? Or cinematics?

And that scripted bit where she grabs on to the semi trailer is umm... scripted? Cut-scene?

On the other hand there are cars, and they're driving around Seattle (edit: Fortune Valley?), and there is a chase with the cops, which is everything I knew before the reveal trailer.

So hmmm.... guess we'll see more at some point.

What are your guys opinion on NFS: Shift?
My favorite sim-cade racer before DriveClub came along (which I think of as kindof a spiritual successor in many ways), but the controls never quite felt right, even after spending a long time dialing them in. But in terms of sense of speed and danger, cockpit view and environments it was top notch.

I like what I'm seeing. I'm interested.

Not sure why people are just wanting another Most Wanted. If you want to play Most Wanted, go play Most Wanted. Series evolve and expand.

that trailer was pretty good, showed variety of different types of races + day/night cycle. im interested but it all comes down to car handling for me, if it controls like shit than its worthless

i havent played the last couple of NFS games but...WTF is up with them trying to make some kind of fast and furious movie with this shit? a story, in a racing game? for fuck's sake. will hold out for reviews. if its a solid racer that lets me skip dialogue and cutscenes im in.
What are your guys opinion on NFS: Shift?
as someone who favors track racing, i enjoyed the shift series. not a sim racer by anymeans, but i had fun with it

Loved the two games. Would have liked to have seen EA carry on with the more sim like games one year and then an arcade racer the next.

My favourite NFS games are the PS1 games The Need for Speed, Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit, Porsche Unleashed, High Stakes, Hot Pursuit 2 and Criterion's Hot Pursuit. I want more like these, not The Run.

I would rather the title had been, "Need for Speed: Covfefe". That would have fit the tone of the game more.

I'm honestly excited. I love most all the NFS's as there aren't many other arcade racers out there. Story is whatever, I honestly don't care, though this looks better than the last few. I'll buy this game.

Is it me or could this be a bigger open world? (collecting cars out in the desert/wilderness?)

I wanted more Need For Speed Hot Pursuit - Exotic cars/locations.

Oh well, if it has an Exige I'll buy it anyway ^_^

Need For Speed Most Wanted 2012 is my favorite racing game of all time. Burnout Paradise is a close second place. I don't understand why nobody tries to copy that formula. I honestly do not get it. I understand it's easier to come up with a goofy narrative but damn.

Of course it is, as is the Huayra BC etc, I just prefer the Hot Pursuit type of gameplay, just driving a Huracan Performante on exotic island roads etc, not F&F movie gameplay.

Its a good thing we've seen so much gameplay of this game to know what it'll even be.

You asked for another open world NFS game that doesnt focus on tuning, instead focusses on being a Fast & Furious ripoff, very story focused racing game?

K then.

well, it does say this:

Featuring the deepest customization from the series, players can truly craft a personalized and unique ride, or spend hours finding and tuning an abandoned derelict into a supercar. They can then push their cars to the limit and raise the stakes by betting on their own performance, where they can either multiply their winnings or risk losing it all.

so it doesn't look like they're dropping the customization at all.

but dude is being a jerk for no real reason (the guy who replied to you)

If they really wanted to double down on the Fast & Furious formula they'd go out of their way to tie in every single game in the series into one ludicrous timeline that spans decades, retroactively make the story of previous entries integral to the plot and feature a cast of returning characters from throughout the franchise history.

No we haven't and of course I will wait with judging this game. It might be alot of fun.
But you can't deny they want to go for a F&F type of game? Explosions, guy jumping on a truck etc.

So he doesn't know what the game is about, complains without reading the main info of the game and speaks on behalf of everyone that no one asked for the game yet I'm the jerk lol

High production values and plenty of useless cinematic filler that shouldn't be in a racing/driving game.

No doubt that the vehicle dynamics model will be dumbed down with bland course designs that are unremarkable but tick the boxes of well known real world locations.

It seems like the usual AAA lowest common denominator approach. Appeal as wide as an ocean but gameplay that is as deep as a puddle. Making repeated play feel like a chore rather than entertainment.

There's no wonder players are deserting the genre if all they're getting are games designed by marketing departments.

I can definitely see the F&F vibes here, but to me it looks more like 4 and 5, which I think is good because F&F got too crazy for me after that. I'd totally be down for the final mission having you rob the casino and pull a big safe out of that place with your car. =D

No thx EA, noone asked for this.

No One?
Everyone secretly wanted this.

P.S I really wish EA would nut up and release a sequel to Burnout 3 and Revenge.
They managed to release Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1, they could do two racers at once.
Burnout is more violent and story free racing closed circuits, Need for speed can keep helping us believe we bryan o connor.

Looks like a Voltex kit on that 350Z, so it looks like real aftermarket parts are back in! Big plus for me.

Looks like Voltex?

Did the big Voltex Logo on the back NOT give it away?

Plus i dont think Need for Speed with any sort of modification will abandon real world parts, Speedhunters would never let them lose that.

I asked for an open world NFS with off road driving, the F&F stuff is just a bonus to me.

Going through NFS Twitter (not so good with doing Twitter links so maybe someone else could?) But someone asked if the action would overshadow the racing aspect, NFS replied: "Still plenty of racing"
Someone else asked about open world and NFS replied: "Yes bigger than ever." Not sure if we're supposed to take that literally or not.
And when asked about the cars in the deluxe edition, NFS said that these are just special editions, stock versions of these cars will be available in the base game.

I actually quite liked the trailer, but I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. It gave off a bit if a The Run vibe, a racing game where you could hardly race how you wanted...

Hopefully there is a custom race mode and such, not just F&F set piecess.

I've been playing various Need for Speeds since the 90s and I've never played one with a story. Was there a story in the original games? my first NFS was NFS 3: Hot Pursuit on PlayStation and that was just sometimes during races cops would start chasing you. I played both Criterion games too and those didn't have any goofy storyline. I feel like they are trying to make NFS into COD with Cars.
