It’s never been a better time to be a spider-fan! The team at Crystal Dynamics, along with our partners, are overjoyed that we get to be a part of this hero’s gaming journey. We can’t wait for you to add Spider-Man to your Marvel’s Avengers roster in early 2021, and as we’ve promised before, he will be available at no additional cost to owners of the base game, exclusively on PlayStation.
Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy playing Marvel’s Avengers when it launches on PS4 on September 4, 2020 and comes to PS5 later this holiday!
Money. Why? Because Spider-Man’s game is PS exclusive or what exactly?
People nowadays seem to enjoy being outraged at anything. It's annoying to say the least. Why are people upset this is a Sony owned licensed character why wouldn’t they use this to benefit themselves? That’s good business.
I'm curious to know how Sony "owning" spiderman actually works.

So its not because SM game is exclusive on PS? Meh.Money.

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man in games (previously held by Activision), as Sony Pictures does for Spider-Man in movies/series.Why? Because Spider-Man’s game is PS exclusive or what exactly?

They only own the movie rights, and I imagine this is timed. A la Destiny. They own the movie and gaming rights I believe. They snagged it up at a low price.
It's their character so they can do as they feel with him.
Exactly, nothing stopped him from appearing in Marvel vs Capcom on Xbox or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 on Switch within this same generation.Because it's not a "Sony owned character" at all, they own the film rights.
Nope, games too, they were previously held by Activision. Whether that contract expired due to a set date or just because Activision didn't do anything with the IP for X amount of time I cannot say. They only own the movie rights

Because Sony flat out owns the Spiderman license. It's why there was a big deal made when Spiderman came to the marvel cinematic universe. It's from the days before marvel had their own entertainment division. Sony had Spiderman and Fantastic Four I think, Fox had the XMen and some other stuff. It's just the way it is.
LolThis is great to see. Wasn’t interested in this game before as it seemed trashy but maybe I’ll support it now.
Probably just get my gameshare partner to buy it around ps5.
No no no please no!! Not the same spiderman! Please use a cheap knockoff from the movies like the rest of the Avengers and leave the PS spiderman out of that universe.

That’s what I asked at the beginning since thats what makes more sense but then Aion002 came and said money.Because Sony flat out owns the Spiderman license. Activision just had a license to make games pending feedback, not the rights outright. Sony owns all rights to use SM in games AND films. Also this is them lending license to Square Enix for inclusion of SM in this game, perhaps in exchange of marketing the game on PS platform, which is the platform with biggest market share.Nope, games too, they were previously held by Activision. Sony does not own game rights, Marvel does, and they aren't ever "selling rights" again after what happened in 1999 lolNope, games too, they were previously held by Activision. And what about the PC? Isn't more the best way to play multiplatforms?I don’t get why everyone get upset. If you want to play as Spider-Man just buy a PS4 or PS5. The whole point of exclusivity is that you buy the console, not that you whine and complain about it not being on your console of choice.
It’s like complaining to Sony about an exclusive feature to LG TVs.
The wrong part about exclusivity is when a game releases on a console, but its sequel doesn’t. And it applies in many things, like how a TV show seasons 1-3 might be in Netflix, but seasons 4-6 could be on HBO Max.
Those things are wrong, but just having a game or content exclusive to a console it’s no wrong at all. (Again, when it comes to new IPs and standalone games).
