[LTTP] Resident Evil franchise

I bet you loved the cutscene where Birkin tears Mr X in half, I didn't hate X but I popped for that big time. A rare true surprise.

Still going through Claire's scenario, but I was indeed surprised when that happened! Maybe I was overestimating how long X was going to be in the game, but it happening felt so sudden.

On a slightly related note, I despised that one Birkin fight where you go across the bridge and fight him on a platform with a shipping container. I probably should have brought more flame rounds and used the grenade launcher to wear him down before trying to knock him off with the container?
I ended up having to narrowly evade his swinging attacks and charge-grab move, and knocked him with the container twice before he fell off.

2R doesn't pull many punches. There's always a way to get through it, but it doesn't have any problem punishing you. That fight is a prime example. You can avoid attacks, but it can be brutal if you don't.

That Birkin fight on the platform is a terribly designed boss fight, even for Capcom’s shitty boss fight standards. I mean, I get it, Capcom is known for tough boss fights, but sometimes they just go too far and the boss fights in RE2R are some of the worst boss fights in all of Capcom’s games. The platform one is the biggest offender imo. There just isn’t enough room to avoid Birkins attacks. It took me forever to get good at that and I hated every second of it. RE3R did the boss fights so much better. One of the reasons I actually prefer replaying 3 Remake over 2 Remake.

That was probably my favorite boss fight in the game. I used the spark shot to drain his health before getting down to the platform and then he'll go down with just one hit from the container pretty easily.

Why is it your favorite? Specifically what is it about the fight that you find fun or enjoyable?

I only ask because it's widely considered to be a terribly designed boss fight (like most of the the boss fights in RE2R). Avoiding Birkin on the platform is like pulling teeth, it's so annoying. Additionally, I've never heard of a strategy that uses the spark shot to drain health in the section before the platform. In fact, I don't think damage starts accumulating until Birkin is on the platform...? At best I've been able to down him 2 or 3 times on platoform by shooting his eye, and then only have to use the container once. Were you playing on easy? Because it only takes one container hit on lower difficulties whether or not he accumulates damage beforehand.

Sorry for the barrage of questions, I've just never heard anyone say they enjoyed that fight, much less it be their favorite in the game.

Nah, I only played on hardcore. Birkin could be sort of a pain to dodge but I never that much of an issue with it. I just liked the pace and concept of it really. I suppose I could be wrong about the spark shot but I always got consistently better results when I did it so who knows.

Haha so true. A delightful moment.

I saw all the discussion about the birkin fight on the platforms. For me it's also a bad boss fight. Felt like a dodge mechanic is missing.

Looking forward REmake 3 for that. Almost back at home so soon I'll start it.

You don’t get the Sparkshot until after X bites it. Tofu gets it though and it does stun X nicely.

Definitely worth it. RE 1 is now one of this came I'll play regularly over the years. So good.

Is Tourmented Souls good ?
Very good, I definitely recommend it if you want to scratch that old school survival horror itch. It's not perfect but they really capture that era of games really well, especially with the fixed camera angles too.

It really shines in the atmosphere and visuals department in my opinion. Very atmospheric and creepy at times.

Fav Series to be honest.... I remember when I saw the Zombie head turn for RE1 on PS1 at my neighbors house(My ps1, his electricity)... I was like holy shit this is the start of something crazy!... Took me at least 10 year to finish it the first time due to sheer Terror. Loved Nemesis... again... too much of a Pansy so it was more my older brother's thing... I remember thinking he was a hero for beating 3.... Then I got Code Veronica from a Friend at school and to this day it is still my favorite... mostly due to my sheer terror and incompetence always running out of ammo.

Ill stop rambling.... loved RE1 for the DS a ton... Do not like Re 5 6 and revelations... but I have not given them proper chances... 7 was too terrifying.... Had to wait for 8 for my fav RE finally the Horror is at a level I can enjoy unlike 7 and the game is fun.... best RE in VVVVRRRRR!!! Needless to say I am in a constant state of orgasm.... Real life is tough and all I have left to do is a Shotgun run... Cant wait for RE 4 VR.

I don't think the human race is worthy of those Remakes we got... Especially 1 and 4... but 2 was great too damm... and I loved 3.... Please give me Code Veronica so I can finally beat it.

I love your story with the serie. I can only imagine what the announcement and first playthrough of REmake 2 must have been for a long time fan. Such a crazy good remake.

Just started REmake 3. Surprised how it goes fast with the story. Nemesis is immediately here, already met Carlos with Nikolai and solve the fire hose puzzle. In just 30 min ! Quite like it so far. Especially Nemesis scripted scenes. I prefer that to Mr X.
The dodge mechanic is a god send and I find it well balanced (it doesn't look like you can mindlessly dodge through everything.

Fun fact : I was terrified by the small First person sequences at the beginning. Don't know if I can play through 7 xD

Thank you for yet ANOTHER reminder that I haven't started 7. I don't know what it is, I just never feel like I'm in the mood to start it. I'm sure once I do I will very much enjoy it.

I do find the dodge one of the more generous dodges of modern times, which is good because RE doesn't need to be a Fromsoft game.

7 was terrifying in the beginning and only kept getting worse... Once I heard there was like one magnum cartridge in the whole game, I felt underpowered and decided I was too scared to keep going.

I somehow managed to miss both Original and Remake RE2.... Only possible reason I missed 2 Remake is not having a console a the time, I'm not gonna even try to remember why cuz that's the only reason it could be... Eventually I got 3 Remake I liked it a lot too but thought original 3 was better.. The Worm alone is enough to make it better... Despite being scarier; I think I like random nemesis more.

I got to 2 remake after 3 Remake and I was very disappointed by what 3 Remake could have been... So much bigger, so much better... my Brother even called me and asked me is it him or is 2 Remake incredible...

Like I said, humanity does not deserve RE Remakes.

I reactivated the subway and I am at the start of the sewer.

Really enjoy it. I actually really like Nemesis. Yes he's more scripted but he's still chasing you in some areas. And in opposite to Mr X, he's very intimidating to me and a not just a nuisance. The dodge mechanic makes it more enjoyable too.

I'll confess, maybe you guys here can understand... Highlight of life is stealing a kiss from each of the Dimitrescu sisters as they crumble in VR... It's the little things in life. 💋 😘 😗 😚 😙

I would do Alexia Soo much ❤️ 😍 💖 maybe the brother too but I'm not sure...

Of course only kidding in case that was not clear... did enjoy my kisses.

Resident Evil 7 is amazing. I much prefer it to Village due till the atmosphere, characters, locations, and narrative. Village is *fine*, but as much as it tries to lean into what made RE4 so good, it never actually gets there. 7 is smaller and more contained like the original game, and while the combat is clunky in first person, it’s absolutely dripping with atmosphere and a level of detail that is missing from Village. The DLC is top tier too. It’s creepier than most RE games and outside of enemy variety and missing a dogs mechanic I think it’s close to being the perfect horror game.

RE2R is possibly my favourite game in the franchise though. I wish the second run had been more fleshed out, but it’s a very well rounded experience. One of the things that I love about it that disappointed me in RE4 is how we weapons don’t just magnetically attach to the players back and actually have straps when the player slings them over their shoulder. I wish RE4 had that detail too and it irritates me greatly that it doesn’t.

Still, RE remains one of the best series in gaming and one that I delve into every year. I just cycled back to the Directors Cut of the original game on a Vita. The REmake is glorious, but the original game has so much fucking charm it’s ridiculous.

And REmake 3 is done ! Really short but very good game for me.

Let's put it like this : very good game but questionable remake (especially after REmake 2).
It's basically an action packed linear and cinematic game. And I was really in mood for that.

I see the complaint about Nemesis being too scripted (especially on some chase which are just disguised QTE) but I loved it. Each encounter was memorable, intense and scary.

I'll probably take a break again (modern day setting with guns is not usually my thing) and ordered Dragon's Dogma.
But I have to say the action packed final sections of REmake 3 kind of hyped me for Resident evil 4.
I'll think about it but I'll still probably go for Dragon's Dogma first. Long time it's on my radar.

RE games/addons are on sale on Xbox (under the “Golden Week” sale, for those interested) so I finally got the DLC for RE8. Played the Rose story, and man I can’t think of anything else I’ve played recently that takes such a nose-dive in quality.

The beginning is fun because it’s like a remix of the castle and has Zombie-like enemies you have to choose to confront or avoid while figuring out what key items will help you progress. I.E. it plays like a classic RE game.

Once you get past the castle part though it just devolves into walking-sim garbage with one of the worst forced stealth sections I’ve played in a while. It’s such a shame because the story is actually pretty heartwarming for an RE game, and doesn’t come across sappy as it easily could have.

That being said I may replay 8 in third-person now that I have the option. And Mercenaries is pretty fun too.

It’s interesting actually. I’m assuming the Lycans or the Varcolacs ate any actual local dogs/cats. They don’t seem to care about chickens, pigs, or goats 😂 I was surprised not to see any actual dogs.

RE7 is set in swamplands so I’m less forgiving about the absence of dogs since alligators would just kill them. Maybe some molded animals would have been interesting in the cure game, but I never actually questioned it once. Alligators, and little crawlers (not quick molded) show up in the DLC, and the main game has insect enemies. I don’t know how well dogs would have worked since they’d be prey for everything.

Enemy variety is the only real hit against 7. The molded are fine but there aren’t enough varieties of them. I like how headshots are prioritized over just dumping ammo into them, and I like how quick and damaging they can be though. By comparison, Village has more distinct enemy types, but they are less interesting to fight and nowhere near as individually dangerous outside of the sub-boss type enemies.

One thing I hate about Village is how you can headpop the Lycans easily enough, but not other humanoid enemies. Seemed lazy. I also really don’t like the third-person mode in Village. It feels more like Revelations than the remakes, the animations don’t look as good, and weapons magnetically attach to Ethan’s back. The RE2/3 remakes had slings for non-pistol weapons which looks so much better.

As a single playthrough, it's great. The flaws don't show themselves that much, and what you get is a fun experience. It's when you go back for more that it starts to really show itself for what it is. Scripted moments and cutscenes all over the place (the apartment chase is horrible for it), and you cherish the best moments while lamenting the worst. I found the bosses past flamethrower (aka clones of Birkin's phases, bye bye originality) to be boring after the first go through.

Dragon's Dogma is imperfect but gold nonetheless, and I hope it clicks for you because the gameplay is such good fun and past a certain point you are barely locked into anything so you can experiment. I ended up doing everything on PS3 then all over again kn PC because it's that much fun. Will you use this as the LTTP thread for it?

Fair point. Replay value is pretty low indeed.
I personally liked all the boss fight. The dodge makes them very enjoyable compare to REmake 2.

I'll keep this thread for RE. I didn't consider making a LTTP for Dragon's Dogma but why not actually. I'll see after few hours into the game.

Have any of you guys read the Romero Resident Evil movie script? I think if he had simplified it (cut out all of the meandering introductions and exposition at the beginning) Didn't explain as much stuff, let the mystery unravel, and started with the troopers dropping into the mansion, it would have gotten made.

Out of curiosity I tried Resident Evil Resistance.
Interesting concept. I like to play mastermind but feel like you can't win. Or at least with the starting options. Maybe with the unlocks it gets better but I am not enough into multiplayer for that.

It was boring as a survivor.

Last I checked it was pretty unbalanced and survivors had a giant edge over even high-level masterminds. Although if they're anything like the dragonball: the breakers community they'll act like giant babies at the very the suggestion of having to work for a win.

I had a bit of time to kill, so I hit the pipe again (Rev2 Raid).
"Just one more stage"
"Alright, last one"
"This weapon seems good, obviously I have to test it before I stop"

I'll continue the main story one day I'm sure, but as a "I need to kill an hour or two" it's great stuff.

It took me almost 3 months of on-and-off playing, but I finally beat RE2make on Claire's A-Scenario, Normal Difficulty. When I finally beat G4 (the final Birkin boss fight), I did it with only 5 seconds left on the clock.

As a vet of OG RE4, I have to say this game is much less of a pushover. The enemies are more like bullet sponges (you don't really get rewarded for headshot accuracy), areas are darker and more cramped (restricting your movement), and often it's better to just down zombies (rather than outright kill them). The boss fights are really tough on first playthrough, too, I'm really glad for autoload and not having to go back to typewriter saves...

All of these serve to reemphasize the "survival" aspect of the early games, which was pushed to the wayside in favor of the one-man army action-based gameplay I've been accustomed to.
I played through the original RE1-3 trilogy, CV, and RE1make several times, but it's been several years since then, and so it's been a learning curve going back to a less actiony style.

I've gotten started on Leon's B-Scenario, Normal Difficulty, and I was so glad when I finally made it to a typewriter in the police station. Man, the opening parts of each scenario feel so tough.

Do yourself a favour after you are done with the B scenario and play Resident Evil 7. It’s one of the best games in the series and is markedly better than Village, RE5, RE6, and the Revelations games.

Even better.. play it in VR 😳

The cast and writing is excellent and the Baker plantation is wonderfully put together. It’s far closer to the Original game in terms of pacing, atmosphere, and puzzles. Boss fights are pretty good, especially those against
Jack
. The
garage
fight and the
chainsaw
fight were brilliant. The environments are extremely detailed; crafted with far more care and attention than those in Village.

Lots of key/puzzle based gameplay, lots of backtracking like in the first two games, and some cool callbacks to the early games.

The only real negative is the limited enemy variety, but I still preferred what 7 had to Village. Every enemy is dangerous (make sure you block attacks) and they move faster than you would I expect. Headshots are incredibly satisfying, and combat is just the right level of stressful without feeling too easy or punishing.

The sound design is amazing and they managed to touch on a whole bunch of different horror movie tropes. They tried the same thing in Village but 7 does it much more successfully. It’s very well done.

It also has some great DLC and can be picked up disgustingly cheap in a sale. RE4R is a gameplay masterpiece, but RE2R and RE7 are much more faithful to the original.

Raising again from the tomb, here I come !

With a friend, we've been cooping through Resident Evil 6 (aka the giraffe getting blowjobed) and we have an amazing time with it. We've done Leon, Jake and Ada campaign. Currently on Chapter 3 of Chris campaign.

This game is really an amazing coop game. Of course there are some technical problem here and there (not so precise command, camera is sometimes really annoying...) but the emphasis on coop is really satisfying when playing with a friend.
On so many occasion, you get separated and each have to do something different (one is solving a puzzle to open a door while the other is fighting for his life, one is driving a motorbike while the other one on the back is shooting enemies, one must traverse an area filled with enemies while the other is backing him up with some sniping, etc etc...). It's really pleasant. And characters are all very distinct.

The only letdown was Ada's campaign since it's a solo campaign and they just added Hunk for the coop but he doesn't appear on cutscene, can't interact with doors etc... So the second player feels useless.
But all other campaign are a real pleasure for coop.

Story is a B action movie but it's good time. The fact that all campaigns intertwin and we relive some events from different perspective is a great idea.
Bonus point for the online component where the game look for additional player to play some main characters (usually when you reach a point where several campaigns intertwin). Also the "invasion like" feature where players can take controls of the enemies is a great idea.

Not fan of the abilities system. They cost a lot and you don't really feel the impact of them. And the whole system to equip them is a bit clunky.

So not regretting going for this coop gem ! We are eager to finish it and go into Resident Evil 5.

In parallel, I have started Resident Evil 4 OG (actually the remaster on PS4). I am just after recovering Ashley in the church.

Gameplay is really rough and clunky. I knew it by reputation but it's quite a challenge to get in. I am use to it now but honestly if the game didn't had so much praise, don't if I would have continue (and I am usually someone who don't get bothered easily by old gameplay).
I like the shooting even if it's really surprising for a Resident Evil. They went really full action. I don't remember but did the fan of RE1-2-3 enjoyed it at first ? Or there was a backlash for it ?

Waiting to learn more about the story, but I have a good time with it. The merchant is great and I like the upgrade and weapon system.

There was some backlash but most people where fine with the transition. I didnt mind it so much at first since I was interested in RE doing their take on the Italian cannibal zombie genre but I despised the silly, gamey tone and Leon's shitty new personality. It wasn't so bad prior to the castle but at that point the game just fell off a cliff for me and I ended not liking the game at all. The other problem was just how unbalanced the combat was since flash bangs and roundhouse kicks trivialized most encounters especially with how passive ganados tend to be. Oddly enough a problem that didn't get addressed until the remake.

I agree on kicks. Combat so far is just basically "headshot -> kick and repeat". I just used one flashbang and it was quite powerful indeed.

Glad to see a thread bump!

Good idea playing 6 with a friend. I didn't enjoy it solo, I only pushed through Leon's for the story and remember about 2% of that game. I think you'll have a better time with 5, I had a good time in co-op back in at release.

4 has always been divisive in the RE fanbase, although to what degree depends on who you ask. There is a niche of diehard classic RE fans that hate it for not being a classic RE title and for being the death of classic RE. For me, 4 is one of my favourite games of all time but it's not my favourite Resident Evil game. I have always loved it, but for what it is rather than for being a good RE game. In a bubble it might as well be its own thing, and it doesn't take itself seriously. It's nothing like the games either side of it.

I can imagine 4 being an odd one if you're going backwards. Playing in release order 4 makes perfect sense control-wise, because it's classic RE tank controls with a new viewpoint. This was especially apparent with the OG controls. But if you're going backwards and playing newer releases, you have new style controls playing an old style game and I can see how that would be jarring to some especially with the lack of agility.

I didn't realize it was tank control with an over shoulder camera. That's true !

I am now fully adapted to it and really like it. I did quite some progress and I am now at the castle, just next to the shooting minigame.

The "centipede" like boss before the castle has this really "classic resident evil" vibe. I enjoyed it.

I also enjoyed the prisoner fight. Took me a bit of time to realize, he relies on sound only (the cutscene clearly shows his eyes sewed but 🤷‍♂️).

A bit annoyed by groups of enemies popping up out of nowhere near me during short cutscenes but I guess it's ok for an old game. It feels sometimes unfair xD.
Hopefully there are checkpoint and you die. I sometimes leave Ashley at the beginning of an area to clear it but suddenly some enemies appears at the door next to her and it's an instant Game over xD

Really enjoying the weapons and shooting. Make a full use of my arsenal (Rifle is my favorite and most upgraded.) I just acquired the Magnum and Blacktail.
