Frankenstein your dream Grand Theft Auto!

PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD: Mix and match mechanics from all existing GTA games to create the ultimate Grand Theft Auto.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Between all the various Grand Theft Auto Games and Red Dead Redemption, R* has introduced a wide variety of gameplay mechanics. Many of these were changing as the series progressed, sometimes for the better, sometimes for worse.

This thread is about stitching together YOUR dream Grand Theft Auto game from the elements that came before. I’ll start of course, but I’m really interested in your little car-stealing Frankensteins. Join the fun! Oh, and while I’m trying not to modify what already exists too much, feel free to make up systems from the ground.

GAME STRUCTURE
As much as enjoy the structure of contemporary GTA games, there’s something in GTA2 that makes me return to it regularly. The level of freedom is astounding and feels fresh even today.

For those of you with short memory, both the original GTA and GTA2, while featuring dozens of missions, presented the player with only one critical goal: attaining a set sum of money. A patient player could finish each section by, for example, only stealing and selling cars.

Now, with all the non-violent money making opportunities of later games (like taxi or ambulance), you could complete a new GTA structured this way without killing anyone. Of course, not many people would find that very appealing, but more freedom is always a good thing, no?

I also like this system because the mechanic is very elegant. You can buy stuff to perform better, but at the same time you’re actually getting away from your goal because you’re spending cash. In GTA2, the player had to pay for saving, which made the whole design even more interesting.

Obviously, I would make two changes:

- No permanent death, as in GTA 1 or 2. If the player gets wasted, just take some money away from him and maybe lower the score multiplier. If the player gets busted, take the guns away, but for the love of god, let him buy them back, like in Vice City Stories!

- Reaching a milestone would not teleport the player to a wholly separate level, but simply push the plot forward and unlock either a new district of the city or even actually a new city, if something approaching the scope of San Andreas is doable this gen.

As for the missions itself, I would bring back the respect system from GTA2. The idea is that there are three factions in each district. The more you work for them – or kill their enemies – the more respected you are and you get harder, better paying missions. However, at the same time, you get negative respect from the opposing faction. That not only blocks their missions until you kiss and make up, but also makes them actively try to kill you and even send hitmen after you.

Now, I would like to have that back. Of course, since all the missions would basically be optional, not as many resources could be put into accompanying cutscenes and so on. One way to combat that would be to make sure that no factions gets completely destroyed during the game, so you can do missions for them even after completing the critical path.

Oh, and don’t get me wrong - I’m not advocating completely sacrificing the story for the sake of gameplay. It’s just that most of the story would be tied to the main goal (getting progressively larger amounts of cash), with cutscenes playing after reaching each milestone. The plot and character relationships could be further developed through phone-calls.

Finally, some version of the honor system from RDR could be nice, especially because of the many ways to reach the goal, but it would have to fit the plot and I don’t find it necessary.

WANTED SYSTEM
I’d keep the Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars version. I’d also add the bounty system from RDR for the factions the player had pissed off. Instead of paying the bounty at a train station, you’d have to either pay tribute to the faction or do a couple of special missions for them.

GUNPLAY AND COVER
While still not perfect, I think RDR has the best gunplay of all open-world Rockstar games so far. Targeting could use some work, but at least it feels right. It’s annoying in GTA IV how you can shoot a pedestrian five times in the stomach and he’d still be alive. In Red Dead, I feel every shot matters. Even if an enemy survives a bullet to the chest, I can at least see that he just got hit in the chest. Feels good, mang!

Some form of Dead Eye would be perfect for shooting tires and fuel tanks. It could be kept to just one bullet, so the player would use the ability only on special occasions. I’m also a fan of regenerating heath...

*ducks*

MEELE COMBAT
This pretty much sucks in all GTAs, especially the later ones. I’d argue that Vice City Stories is the one-eyed game among the blind, so let’s have that. Or better yet, I’d cheat a little and use the fighting mechanic from The Warriors or Bully. These games got it right.

ASSETS
I like the Vice City Stories approach the most. However, in place of protecting the property from attackers, I’d add optional missions that let the player make better profit from the asset. For example, firebombing a rival restaurant, recruiting girls for a porno studio, finding better cars for a taxi service and so on. Speaking of taxi services...

VEHICLE MISSIONS
Again, I think Chinatown Wars has the best implementation of vehicle missions so far. No need to mess with perfection. Some other things that I’d keep from CW are the drug deals, online Ammunation and the ability to hijack transport trucks.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION
I still think San Andreas did it best. You’d still have a set character, but you could change his hairstyle, clothes, add tattoos and so on. It could tie-in with the respect system.

CAR CUSTOMIZATION
San Adreas had this elaborate car customization system that I never used because I had a habit of crashing my car on the way to buy groceries. I think this could be remedied with a variation of Red Dead Redemption’s horse hitching. Any car left at the garage would be considered owned (if it was acquired through theft, the player would perhaps have to hit a Pay’n’Spray first). Then, if it were destroyed, it could be salvaged and repaired for a fee by making a phone call – in other words, it would simply respawn at the garage. It would also be great if the player could call for his pimped out ride to be delivered to a certain place, like in Scarface.

FRIENDS AND GIRLFRIENDS
I don’t hate how it was done in GTA IV. However, I’d probably lessen the penalties for telling a friend off or maybe even eliminate them altogether and just make it harder to max out a relationship. Obviously, EACH friend or girlfriend should have an unlockable skill. There must be more incentive to hang out with virtual characters than an arbitrary game completion stat (although I know it’s enough for many boys and gals).

I think that’s it. Please discuss and share your own views.

Or, alternatively, tell me there’s no way you’re reading all this and that it’s a cool story (bro). Then post gifs of people asleep on the keyboard. Thanks!

I'd love a GTA-like game where you played a roadie transported to this huge fantasy world that looked like the covers of all my favorite heavy metal albums, with missions that were like crazy RTS sections that played out like they were rock concerts. Ozzy and Lemmy could do voices, it'll be awesome.

The game you're describing existed at one point in time. However, it was canceled.

Well, there is that zombie DLC coming for Red Dead later in the summer...

I was wondering recently, why they didn't release an addon for GTA4, which would turn the city into a zombie breakout zone. Would have made the mp better as well: team up to survive reaching a safe zone across the city (top of a building etc.).

I always wanted a topdown view GTA like the first and second one, but instead of just 1 city it's the whole world. Cities are generated by using Googlemaps. The game is of course online-multiplayer and the sole purpose is just to earn money and become the top ranking crimelord.

And at the end of every month we would get a special event, like an alien invasion, zombie outbreak or World War 3.

GTA: Cyberpunk

The insanely detailed city of GTA IV combined with a cyberpunk setting and a lot of RPG elements such as upgradeable cybernetic mods that improve your stats.

Now add the multiple cities and rural areas approach of San Andreas, and we have a 20+ million seller on our hands.

I replayed Deus Ex recently and this idea popped up. It would own.

Awesome, I'd buy that on day one!

I've thought about a Grand Theft Auto in the Heroes universe, but I think that a Fallout-esq take would be even better.

Prototype and inFamous were both a good take on an open world superhero GTA, but they only focus on the destructive elements of superhero powers, not cool powers like mind control or time travel. Also, I want an open world game where I can fly at will Superman-style(NOT GLIDE) and we've had TWO superhero games that have let this opportunity come and go.

Diablo x GTA

Medieval swords and sorcery setting and sandbox world. Actually sounds a bit like Fable.

So mash it up with Demons Souls as well, and you'd have a potential Game of the Forever.

The thought is interesting, but I don't think it's doable. Even if the cities were procedurally generated, someone would still need to place active markers (missions, places of interest) by hand. Also, even with some suspension of disbelief, it would be weird if you had the same kind of traffic and vehicles in India as you do in the States. All of these kinds of things would need a human designer. I doubt such a game could be created in reasonable time and on reasonable budget.

Never forget.

By the way, guys, while I appreciate each and every post, you are doing it wrong. The purpose of this thread is not (or at least wasn't supposed to be) to list every idea for an open-world game you think is cool. Grand Theft Galleon in 3... 2... 1...

No. My intention, as stated in the OP, was to discuss gameplay systems featured across all the GTA games and then maybe try to combine them into an approximation of the ultimate Grand Theft Auto experience.

It wouldn't be really GTA, but I think a similar style sandboxy vehicle based game set in a Mad Max-esque world would be awesome.

This makes me cry, because I want that in a better game.

The closest I've gotten is using console commands in Fallout 3 to turn off clipping, increase run speed by 10 and going into first person mode.

Sigh, it's not the same.

GTA was surpassed long ago.

The new holy grail is Just Cause 2 + Red Faction Guerrilla buildings and hammer.

edit: also, the RFG missions where you'd invade an enemy base, or defend one.

Model terrain and towns the size of the U.S.
Add zombies
Add survival requirements (food, water, shelter from elements)
Add rogue factions that are out to rape/steal/murder
Add Persistent World
Add lots of various Leaderboards and unlockables
Marinade with good art direction

= my dream game

Red Faction: Guerrilla with RDR-styled story and co-op/freeroam. RF:G already had an amazing engine and versus multiplayer, and co-op would only make it better. Any setting can do, as long as the shooting and movement is rock solid like RF:G.

My ideal GTA would be Vice City with:

GTA 4's engine.
San Andreas' swimming and basejumping/skydiving.
San Andreas' gang wars from the Los Santos stage of the game, but have the VC gangs able to fight and take over each others territories as well.

I haven't played GTA4 or any of the handheld GTA's. If any of those have Saints Row 2 style hitman, shop holdups, muggings, or Fuzz style missions then add those in.

PC version obviously. And ... yep I'm done, I'd be happy with that!

Everything from GTA: SA in HD of course plus taking over businesses from VCS, the setting from VC* and the character from the third.

And I kinda liked the idea to call your friends to help out in GTA 4 but please without the stupid hanging out shit (especially when they are like 2 fun things to do), make it like in Persona (you get to know them better without having to play the maybe worst pool minigame ever and drive the dude home despite him living one block away, I was waiting for him to ask me if I want to come up for a coffee or something).

*EDIT: With the exception that it's as big as GTA : SA, so you're not only able to run around in Miami but explore the entire region.

Can we add an element from another series? If so, virtually any other modern 3D series' control scheme plus a landscape and soundtrack as good/varied as those found in San Andreas.

Okay, but what's so unique about San Andreas' wanted system?

EDIT: I'm dumb. San Andreas with IV's wanted system. Got it.

You mean you'd like a return to silent protagonist? Or would you want Claude to be fleshed out?

Of course. Any particular game's control scheme you'd like to mention?

Question for the class: Are you familiar with Chinatown Wars' wanted system? And if so, what is your opinion on it?

Fleshed out..Dude just disappeared (had a cameo in some GTA I think) so It would be nice to see what happened to him. And he was very likeable, but when I think about it all of them were except for the dude in LCS.

Nope but will play it after I finished Jeanne D'arc.

That was San Andreas, where the fact he's mute was made part of the storyline.

I would like to see some of the original characters return as well, but I'm afraid GTA IV takes place in an alternate universe of sorts.

Jay Sosa said:

It's pretty interesting. Since my English fails me at this late hour, I'll just quote GTA Wiki:

Rather than the proximity-based system used in Grand Theft Auto IV, Chinatown Wars uses a version similar to that of the GTA III era. The most notable difference to this is how stars are lost.

Though over time they do lower themselves, and can still be lost at a Pay 'n' Spray out of police view, stars can also be removed by disabling police cars. Each wanted level has a corresponding number of cars to take out (the first level has one car, the second has two, etc). The cars can be taken out by ramming at high speed or by forcing them to crash. Using weapons to disable a pursuing police vehicle is considered as retaliation, and the disabled vehicle does not count towards reducing the current wanted level.

No.
He steals your girlfriend and that's it.

There is some justice though!
The girlfriend betrays him at the beginning of GTA III.

San Andreas is a prequel to GTA III.

No offense, but the ideas they're posting are more interesting than the direction you intended for the discussion.

Put me down as another vote for a cyberpunk-themed GTA-like game. Now I'm imagining something like a cross between the 3D GTA's and Shadowrun for the Genesis.

Takes place in a modern day, hugely expanded (GTA4 style) version of Los Santos. You play as a crooked cop (think Training Day or The Shield) and you have to balance your crooked side with still having to go on calls, investigating crimes, running stings on drug dealers, ect....with some resource/strategy type managment that plays off of the Gang territories stuff from GTA:SA, only now you have to dictate which gangs hold which power based on what your own personal business dealings. For example: You have to use your cop power to eradicate a certain gang from one area so that another gang that you are in bed with can take over that turf.

If I get to play as Rick pre-Governor I'm in.

Graphics
Takes place in 1970s London-esque city or San Francisco (or whatever San Francisco was called in GTA:SA) in the graphic style of GTA4.

Story
I'd like to see 3 or 4 shorter storylines ala the GTA4 DLC. Have them intertwine or come together in a more meaningful way than in GTA4 though. I like the way missions have worked in recent GTA games.

Gameplay
Regenerating health is the way to go. I also like the gunplay from RDR. I also like the idea of being able to own a car like a horse in RDR. Maybe in addition to a Pay n Spray visit, you'd have to bribe someone to scratch off serials or change the DMV database or something. Make a small nominal fee to pick up and repair a totaled vehicle that you can pick up in your garage or have delivered.

Extras
I'd like more character customization but no where near the extent of character customization in SA. I like the fact that Nico is an established character and I like the somewhat-serious tone of GTA4 more than being able to make my character super buff with a wacky haircut and a stupid outfit. Bring back some side missions/mini games. More cheats. I'd like to be able to have more fun when I'm in screw-around-mode. Make the citizens riot, give them all guns, make cars behave in weird ways, etc.

Uh... in terms of character, I hope they would take influence from Red Dead Redemption and Bully with a decent human being as the protagonist instead of the much more sociopathic characters of previous games. I can't really root for a guy like Vercetti (and just barely Bellic), but I found myself really wanting the main characters of RDR and Bully to succeed. It's easier to sympathize with them, I think. I liked how there seemed to be more consequences for negative actions in those games. I like Rockstar's "good guys" much better than their "bad guys".

Hope GTA V builds on the gunplay from RDR. The gunplay was fantastic. Since we'll probably hit a city again, I'd like to see a city different in look and vibe from any of the previous places... I do like the cyberpunk idea. GTA crossed with Blade Runner would be awesome.

Less focus on radio to be honest... both RDR and Bully don't have radio music (RDR has a few songs, but those are very well placed), so they have a fantastic score. I don't remember GTA IV having a memorable score.

More character customization would be nice.

Edit: Rockstar game where you play as a cop on the wrong side of the law? Heck yeah.

Okay, take GTA and throw in elements of X-com. (or perhaps The Invaders or They Live)

You're a gang member. You make a drug deal, it goes bad and you end up killing the other guy. Then he disappears in a red glow.

You go tell your gang leader. He doesn't believe you. You get mad. He gets mad. You fight. You kill him. He disappears in a red glow. But it gets seen by some of the other gang members. And they are like WTF?

So, much like the guy in the invader, you decide to start your own private war against the aliens. I mean, hell, the guy on the TV show was a architect, and the body count of aliens reached triple digits after two seasons (or close to it), imagine what a gang could do?

And then you could build bases like x-com. Hire scientists and fighters and such. Research laser rifles, flying suits, Ufos.
