Elden Ring: Map size is going to be "incredibly huge"

Elden Ring is basically Open world Dark souls isn't it?
There wouldn’t have been Elden Ring if it had not been for Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, or Sekiro. It’s basically everything they’ve learned from making those games and they’ve crafted Elden Ring. To me, calling it open world Dark Souls is summing it up to be paper thin. You need to add the skills, jumping mechanic, the horse riding, and etc. There’s a lot more there than some of the Dark Souls game(s).

Cant wait to start exploring it.
In the store i usually buy my games, the PS5 and PC versions of the game are already sold out. Might have to pre-order sooner than i wanted, before its sold out in the other stores.

While I'm happy to have a lot of places to explore, map size doesn't matter too much to me in a Souls game when it takes me 4 hours to succeed and get across a bridge.

It's not the size, but how you use it...

Memes aside, I hope they make the world fun the explore with lots of meaningful content like dungeons and other cool places and meaningful rewards, basically giving the player a reason to explore the world and not just going from point A to point B.
Well the network test area already had as much unique content as an entire Assasin Creed game.

I know this, Dark souls is the only title I could think of.

I didn’t know if you felt like it was some sorta copy/paste. When you break everything down there’s a lot there to set it apart from the other games.

Where or when did someone say the main game was going to be 30 hours? I remember that was something that was brought up years ago. That’s not terribly long if you ask me. Dark Souls is said to be a 45-50 hour long game and a lot of us can finish that in about half. If the 30 hours is true then how is this massive map shadow over that play time? That’s where I’m a bit skeptical and think the video in question is getting clicks for it. I am excited for this game. I also feel like it’s going to be another story come mid 2022 when people have played it completely.

I want Elden Ring to be 500+ hours (Dying Light 2 developers stated that their game was going to be that length to complete everything)

If that's all it is (the purple part plus a little more where it's cut off) that's not really THAT large. For a Souls game, sure, it's big, but definitely not "incredibly huge" by any standard.

There were some theories that the map was actually the ring in the game's title, as in what we've seen so far is only one "side" of a ring-shaped map. Now THAT would be huge. Probably doesn't make sense though.

I do think the map looks weirdly elongated though, like it's a "corridor", which is pretty uncommon for an open world game. Good way to gate progression though, Tsushima did it pretty much exactly that way.

Some 10 to 15 years ago I was impressed when developers said the biggest map ever, three times bigger than the previous game etc but nowadays I'm turned off by that. I think we all realized that bigger maps doesn't mean better games but in most cases bloated games. I hope Elden Ring will avoid this and have a meaningful map regardless of its size. Plus I hope for adequate fast travel.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Hoping it's like a mix between Dragon's Dogma and BOTW, naturally with the awesome souls atmosphere, gameplay and systems. Can't wait. No more scale excuses for shit gameplay from Bethesda and others, thank you.

Is this a hype thread? 'cause map size is so 2010. I'll there for Elden Ring day 1, but talks of sprawling game worlds do nothing for me.

It's pretty funny. If this thread were about a ubisoft game a lot of people would go nuts and critizise a huge map size.
Now the majority of people in here are "pretty excited" about a huge map size.

Dont know what to make of it..... ;)

He just wrote the lore for the game.
And frankly I wouldn't even expect he put that much effort into it.
"What? You are giving me a big fat check to write some vague videogame-y bullshit? Sure mate, I'll have it done in few weeks" (and then it took a year anyway, because he's Martin).

Anyway, for anyone blabbing "It's useless if the map is empty" there's a point that should be made about open world games: empty space is actually needed to an extent to avoid the "theme park syndrome" of having everything and its contrary just few meters away from anything else.
Not to mention it gives the player room to breath.
Also, if developers were a bit more clever and less formulaic in creating open world games, they could LEVERAGE "empty space" for gameplay purposes. For instance you could have a large steppe without too much content in and use it to stage a chase/boss fight on horseback, a caravan escort where you protect a wagon from chasing monsters, etc, etc.

Everyone mentions Miyazaki but didn't George RR Martin have a lot of input on this game?
There is interview somewhere with rr martin.
He says "Oh I just gave them the lore years and years ago so it's surprising to me to see it after all this years what miyazaki did with it".
So sounds like george invented the lore/world but just a general idea

my biggest 'fear' (for lack of a better word) is that this is going to be a very dragons dogma esque empty open world that just feels barren and dead, hope I'm wrong

Well there's already hours upon hours of footage from the first zone that you can check if you want.

That zone feature a dozen of different boss, some inside caves or ruined castle, some outside or at special places. A few of them are gigantic and require open space to navigate and fight, like the dragon, some huge giants or the very mobile mounted knight.

There's several NPC to find and interact with. Lots of small caves, some bigger. Various loot, many hidden, including a few complete sets of armor, some spells, some summoning runes. There's also many "campfire" to activate and teleport to after for quick travel. And a very fast mount to unlock. And all of that in the first area which is less than 20% of the world, with a map without any "?" markers...

So i'm quite confident for the entire map to be full of interesting and unique(and deadly) encounters and discoveries.

Isn’t it obvious? People trust From Software to deliver a quality experience even on a open world setting. Games like Dark Souls were already super open and vast. Everyone’s excited about all the little secrets and experiences that are going to be hidden all over the map. Why wouldn’t we be excited?

Not really though. PS5 games are consistently significantly smaller than the PS4 version (and usually also the XSX version) thanks to much better compression. I haven't had any issues fitting everything I need. I don't need everything I've ever bought installed all at once.

The map should have been huge, at most incredibly large. Incredibly huge is simply too big.

Miyazaki make the games on his own. He is the graphics designer, gameplay design, script writer. Everyone else are just scratching their balls. While mah dude does everything

Look at the respective track record of the developers and you have your answer.

Last think I want to hear about games.

Can't wait to waste my time traversing a huge empty world filled with copy-pasted and irrelevant stuff, yeah !

I cant fucking wait.

a huge open world map with NO ICONS on the map. Nothing will be given away. Everything will have to be explored by the community. Messages will be left. guides will be written. Nothing will be given to the player. I bet years later things will still be discovered by the community.

It will put all open world games to shame.

Ubisoft games are copy paste all over. Same buildings, same areas, same icons with the same activities.

FROMSOFT games are open ended with NOTHING told to you as you explore the world. Every FROMSOFT level is left to you to find, explore, leave messages for other players, ect. Nothing is given to you. You have to find that shit on your own or with the help of the community. There will be no map markers showing where items are ect.

Also FROMSOFT worlds are the most interesting in gaming. With incredible detail and world story telling.

They are NOTHING alike.

Read the Edge article when you can. They went into how they were working to make the larger map appealing instead of making the player bored. They even used the word “bored”. I’m sure they know what they’re doing.

Lots of money wasted by Sony on including m.2 storage expansion. People on the internet went crazy trying to increase storage expansion like it was a huge deal. If they have more then enough room why were so many people buying expansions?

Not saying your wrong. I just find it strange.

I really don't know why some people feel the need to have several TB of games installed all at once. Poor/capped internet connections maybe? I don't know, but for me it's not an issue to redownload a game if needed. Maybe some people really do rotate between 10+ games on a regular basis. I certainly don't.
