Twitch vs Speedrun Community Drama (update: Twitch officially responds)

I'm not very familiar with reddit, but this bit strikes me as odd. Why is it a problem to have a large number of upvotes from people coming in just to see the thread?

From my outside perspective, this seems completely bonkers. Unless those people are making extra accounts or something to ballot stuff. It's like you guys are saying "ok, vote, but you can't tell your friends and let them vote. You can't have your community vote. You can't all vote at once or too fast. Only random passerbys that are uninvolved." It isn't as though Twitch staff and those supporting it couldn't come in and down vote it.

The whole idea of an arbitrary no 'vote cheating' policy reminds me of so-called scrubs in fighting games. "No grabs. No fireballs. No timer. No jump ins. No supers. Actually, just don't hit me."

I'm coming off as more critical than I really want to I guess... but I really don't understand how a policy on 'vote cheating' can apply to sharing the link. Was there actual cheating involved and I'm just missing the point?

The reason is simple: 4chan.

I've read through all this about four times and I still can't work out what the hell is going on.

I'm guessing furry drama and gamer drama mixed and now the fucking world is in danger or being destroyed.

Nah, not much furry drama. People are mainly mad at the guy for his abusive actions as an administrator, not because the guy is a furry.

If

1: The post they are upvoting complies with the rules/TOS
2: They aren't using multiple accounts per person

What is wrong with new users from 4chan voting on a topic? Seems like a really unnecessarily exclusionary policy.

Yo, I'm one of the /r/games moderators, and want to clear up a few things up about Twitch posts being removed last night (I'm not a mod of /r/gaming, so I don't know know that much about the order of events there).

Duke_Bilgewater contacted us last night about wanted to make a post about this, and we said he could as long as the post didn't have vote cheating. He posted the link, and within a few minutes it has 30+ upvotes. Posts do not get that many upvotes in that short of a time on /r/games, and it was not the most active time of the day for /r/games. Additionally, many of the accounts that had voted and made comments in the thread were new accounts and/or were not active on /r/games. due to all of this, we removed the post.

We were able to discover that the vote manipulation was due to Duke linking to the the thread on IRC, and after some back and forth, I was able to contact Duke on IRC. I told him he could make another post as long as he didn't link to it on IRC, but he said he didn't want to make another thread. We then allowed the first post about twitch that wasn't vote manipulated in a major way (it could of been a better title though), and since it was late, I went to bed and the rest of /r/games mods dealt with the .

At no time was I or any of the /r/games mods contacted by people from twitch asking for the post to be removed.

I'm sorry but this sounds like bullshit to me. I went to itmejp subreddit to check some D&D podcast info and it has warnings like this with legitimate comments being deleted.

The reason is simple: 4chan.

It's actually a bit more complex.

A few months ago on reddit, on another subreddit, it was found out that one of the moderators was using votebots to make sure that only his websites were viewed so that he could get ad revenue. Ever since, he has been banned along with the website on reddit so there has been a lot of conspiracies going on about the subreddit mods and a lot of hostility.

Which led to another subreddit getting banned because some idiots from pc master race thought it would be a good idea to post the personal info from one of the mods and have his house raided by a SWAT member

Honestly it's quite hard to see that, however this type of thing was bound to happen when 99% of Twitch chat is vomiting memes and emotes at 769485213 per second. It's almost impossible to regulate too unless it's on sub-only or mod-only, but that only serves to rile up viewers as well. And this all started because of the removal (and addition) of emotes too.

I was being facetious :p A few people have defended horror saying he's a good person. Which, I personally am not concerned with. I don't think the guy should be employed (he is paid by Twitch atm) or work for Twitch in any kind of a customer facing role.

Oh god put that furry shit away. I am offended by that oversexualized icon!
That was seriously what caused Twitch to start banning people? Talk about an overreaction to a joke.

On another note, how exactly is that underage furry porn? The way people were talking about it I was expecting something actually bad, not some cartoon dog face.
I can show you what the emote code means in pm if you'd like, though don't get fired in the process :p
It's a reference to his glowing blue dick oh and I guess his tongue glows too ya.

Reddit markets itself as an open community and actively allows burner accounts. These subreddits want to be closed communities like NeoGAF (everyone should want to be NeoGAF) but that isn't what Reddit was about. The supposed "Front page of the Internet" is a corrupt and unethical place. Up votes but only when we allow them.

Same, if you cannot be responsible with the powers given to you, you can be seen as the nicest guy in the world, but you're a dictator who uses his power to get the people to fear you and say nice things.

This would be a great time for YouTube to make their streaming option available to all users. Just swoop in, get some new loyal users out of controversy, and rake in the cash.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Making a thread and linking it on IRC is not allowed ?

Hahahahah, great community you got there guys.
I don't know if linking something to friends is considered "vote cheating" but forestL did say in a later post that some of the votes were coming from multiple new accounts created on the same IP address.

Was just coming to post this. Give it a read as it should clear up a number of our stances. I hopeful that this entire incident will allow us to systematically revaluate the way moderation on the site is handled and communicated. It's most certainly been an eye opening moment for many, for good and for bad.

Thank you Twitch for finally putting a stop to this.

Something that needs to come out of all this is a change in the system for Banning channels, either by not allowing admins to ban channels of people that have "insulted" them, or implementing a review process where another admin aside from the offended one has to approve a channel ban.

That may be so but Werster was "CONSIDERING" getting a real job but he has not gotten it yet. The stream is still his source of income. If he is banned, he loses his livelihood and what are the chances of him getting a job all of a sudden?

Livelihood? Dude, you make it sound like the dude is inches from poverty. Doesn't he live with family? His circumstance is not life or death. It's why he even found the whole ordeal to be funny.

hmm not nice but has to be excepted if you choose to globally force a avatar based on a furry sex thing on ANYBODY.
Yeah, I don't like that just because someone chooses to force their lifestyle out into the open, that it needs to be accepted and embraced.

There are a lot of things that people should just keep to themselves.

I don't really have anything against them, because it's not harming anyone, but really, I just can't understand why one would choose to expose that detail of their lives into the public.

It feels wrong to yell out to the world "I'm a sexual deviant! Accept me!". Keep that shit in your bedroom. You can do whatever you want, I just don't want to know about it.

This whole situation began blowing up outside Twitch, including but not limited to Twitter and Reddit. One of our volunteer admins took it upon themselves to attempt to censor threads on Reddit. This was obviously a mistake , was not approved by Twitch, and the volunteer admin has since been removed. We at Twitch do not believe in censoring discussion, and more to the point know that it’s doomed to failure.

Lol..Reddit mods :p

Anyone expecting Horror's head on a pike was bound for disappointment.

However, kudos to Emmett Shear for the response. The only thing I didn't see touched upon but could have been was issues relating to the @TwitchTVSupport twitter account.

Great response from Twitch. You can lay blame in many places for this incident but I think Twitch are taking most of the blame themselves, they are admitting the way he community is set up isn't perfect and they will try and fix it.

I am glad they didn't indulge in too much outrage about jokes and comments that possibly overstepped he bounds because much of twitch is the unfiltered community that streamers have plugged into has been a massive part of their growth. A day to get the correct response is welcome and these kind of problems were bound to happen as the service grows.

About as good a response as one could hope for at this point. Hopefully moving forward they'll be more even-handed about emotes, and proactive when situations like this arise.

At least Chris92 got what was coming to him. Going out of his way to attempt to censor things was utterly inexcusable.

Pretty sure that is a parody account.

Yep, but seeing it's recent tweets I feel he/they received a quick training class on Social Media Manager

Good enough for me. I'm glad Horror 'stepped down'. Anything less would have been insane.

He did not step down

"Horror has voluntarily stepped back from public facing moderation work at Twitch, as right now pretty much every moderation issue will be tainted by this episode."

This means that he can simply come back when things die down.
