They should host another event, one that will be shown on TV. The negative DRM news spread like wild fire. Despite their annocuement to strip DRM, a lot of people still think its still part of the console.

If Kinect is "integral", why can I do everything on the console itself without the damn thing?

Doesn't the system require sensor to function (legit question here)? If it does, than it's integral to the console much like the controller is. My point was that MS had a vision for their console (much like Sony does with theirs) and if you don't like it, get the other product.

Not impugning your motive here, but I think some people just bitch about the sensor as a way to move the goal post to something else to hate on.

But to move on...

It's no secret that Gamescon is a reboot for the XONE. Without the specters of negative news surrounding the event, MS will try to get their XONE message through unencumbered. That's the one thing this source had that was spot on, considering that MS traditionally doesn't do Gamescon.

Jesus, myth? Go look at their finances buddy, no 'myth' to be had. As much as you'd like to believe.

As I said, it's not as big as today's standards, when you have companies like Apple with $191.5 Billion on hand or even ATT that has about $273.3 Billion...$90billion on hand is not that much. Even Walmart and Samsung cap bigger than that.

If this is true this changes things. Thats the difference between ms and sony. Ms adjusts to the market but sony is stubborn. happened with the ps3 and is happening with the vita. It'll be interesting when the xbox one with kinnect is $399. It will be a better value proposition and competition will be fiercer cos it will be down to the games and Ms has shown its load. After gamescom we'll see the clear winner in terms of launch games.

We actually haven't seen how you control many features of the console without the kinect, so I don't know if you can actually say that yet.

What do you mean? The essentials of the console are navigating the dashboard, entering the store, navigating a webpage. None require Kinect.

Keep it at $499 but throw in the headset and Kinect Rival Sports. BOOM

That game got delayed until 2014... are you proposing they delay their launch until then?

I know, it's pretty silly to force Kinect on everyone and still not launch with a showpiece game for the device... but this is the new MS we're talking about here. The MS that doesn't care if their actions and directives make sense. They'll throw money at them until we relent.

I remember calling BS on the DRM reversal rumor.

I take a wait and see approach to these things now, barring any corroborating evidence one way or another.

It doesn't matter what those companies are doing, you're clutching at straws. What matters is the numbers themselves. When they make $15bill a year, they can afford to drop off $1b (heck it fluctuates more than that on a yearly basis anyway).

Your reasoning is poor.

Only because MS is requiring it. Navigating through the dashboard, buying items on the store, going through a webpage don't need the Kinect sensor, I can do all that with the Xbox One controller.

That's not a lot by today standards especially when you definitely compare that to their competitors that have more than that and generate more than that. It's more than Sony, that's for sure but does not make Microsoft incapable of financial risks.

That is not a lot? Apple is the only competitor that has more.

Anyway, they should keep the price the same and use that $1 Billion on making and buying more exclusives.

drm woops just kidding
shitting on indies woops just kidding
$499 woops just kidding

at least they're fixing mistakes, but they haven't given me any reason to trust them for a while.

At the very least they are attempting to correct their mistakes, unlike certain other company that said their fans would pay 600, because you know.. fans.

As for trust, you shouldn't trust any corporation.

Okay let's start with ATT. You're counting their 70b goodwill as cash? Yeah... Property Plant and Equipment as well?

Yeah, sorry dude. you're wrong on that one.

I hate to re-hash the traditional argument, but there are way more effective ways for the NSA to try and spy on you than streaming audio/video from your Kinect. Your phone/internet history is a much better snapshot of your intent than hoping to listen to you talk with you friends about what you did that weekend. LE has been using wiretaps for years and they require dedicated manpower to listen to every word. Is it really worth the NSAs time to monitor a live video feed from every house in the US? No.

Its easier to track keywords via IP Address online which can be run though a screener. So by being online you are being tracked if they want. You can get mad about that, but don't try and say that the Kinect is another way for them to track you.

Kinect offers another dimension of data being recorded, in contrast to smartphones and webcams, thanks to its advanced features. It detects if you're happy or sad and measures your heartrate, for example. Insurance companies would pay a nice amount of green paper to get ahold of those pieces of information, as well as ad companies (remember, MS officially said the Xbone is designed around ads!)

Also, it's supposed to be at the very center of where various people come together: in the living room. Smartphones are mostly in the hands of its owner.

It remains to be seen if and what data the Xbone sends back home but I'm not at all comfortable with Kinect.

$399 is still feels a bit much for the weaker technology.

I have a hard time believing they will live with the DDR3/32MB esram as long as they did for the life span of the 360. It's just not good enough, and the ratio of xGB DDR3 to only 32MB is not impressive. It still has it's technological foot in the past.

It needs a gentle death, or slow burn until the 720 is introduced. Up to date redesign, compatible with Xbone, rebuild 1st parties, prove they are not DRM scum bags, and deliver something of quality.

Scoble claimed there was a 2 device future, but that has yet to pan out. Maybe it still will, because it has to MS wants to succeed.

If this turns out to be true, and factoring in all the damage control MS has been doing since they unveiled the XBone, it makes them look like they are absolutely scared shitless of the PS4.

They could afford billions off losses in the Xbox and early 360 era, but now with 360 propping up the division, and profits higher than ever (yes) they can't?

Give. It. Up. If they want to swallow $1b to better contend with Sony, they will, and can, easily.

You. Obviously. Know. Nothing. About. Business. To make such a ridiculous statement. You can't just take huge risks like that considering that your other business are falling due to such risks. For example, if you've read their latest earning reports, they made a profit..indeed but they also lost alot because of faltering sales everywhere else.

Yes, Android literally is what's making them money as well as services down the road however, it isn't peachy cream. Learning some economics on how things work will also tell you how they even got that $500 in the first place. I can't explain it because I'm no expert but there is a lot to consider than just saying $400

Today, a 360 with 250GB hard drive and Kinect retails for $399.
I have difficulty seeing a One with 500GB hard drive and Kinect 2 launching at $399.

The Phils will assume control at Gamescom.

So they should be, it's cheaper. What, should they not react because their appearance is more important?

They should be. Just as Sony was scared shitless of the XBO before it was announced. Works out fine for peeps that like games.

This is an Xbox One:

and this is an Xbox One that has reversed it's DRM and indie policies. Or, you could just call it an Xbox 180.

And this...

ssj2_goku_01.jpg

...this is to go even further beyond...to drop the price and mandatory Kinect...to allocate less RAM to the OS, use a stronger GPU, and more clearly integrate CLOUD technology directly into multiplayer games.....to add Xbox 360 BC...aaaaaaaaaafhrjg5ejghEGJHJSEGFJSGJRHFDSGH

I really wonder what would have been different (if anything) if Sony went first at E3

Microsoft is backing down on everything as of late, Win8, their tablets, the DRM, I wouldn't be shocked if the price and even a *gasp* kinect-less version is thrown around

I wonder how you go about "reintroducing" a console. Has something like this ever been done in the electronics industry before?
Theyre pretty much getting on stage and saying "we were wrong to do what we did 3 months ago"

As for trust, you shouldn't trust any corporation.
Sony was already losing like $250 a unit at $599. That was PR to try and mask a huge fuck up that was as "correct"ed as they could make it without destroying the company.

That's the biggest difference between Microsoft today and Sony in 2006: Microsoft's problems are mostly policy related and fixable.

If Microsoft actually does a relaunch event I will be pretty stunned. You don't normally see a company willing to eat humble pie and make an about face like this before they lose millions of dollars. Glad to see people not letting their egos get in the way of good business.

It's good to see them fix mistakes they've made, but at the same time it doesn't foster confidence in the company because they are so quick to change make some of these changes. Most seem to be on the fly changes too instead of calculated ones for the company. DRM was a poor choice and needed to be corrected. Indie support should have been more than "it's Win8 so we can bring you in too" bit and seems like a band-aid for the issue.

The cost drop rumor is just showing that MS has no confidence in their console and what they want to do with it. I'm not saying it's a bad idea for them to drop the price, but it doesn't make me confident that those running the show really know what they are doing.

Excuse my bluntness, but what sort of half-assed equivocation is this?

Consoles require a controller.
Consoles require power.
Consoles require a display.

A console requires an always-listening camera and microphone like a fish requires a bicycle.
And my point is that XONE requires the sensor (calling it a camera is like calling an iPhone a camera since it has one). MS sees it as integral to the Xbox One experience as the controller or the HDMI port. It seems that most of the R&D budget for this machine was in the sensor. It's not just some last minute, tacked-on peripheral that they can decide not to include at the last minute.
