So does this game gave dungeons like ffxv? I am in costa del sol region and there is a gate which looks like a dungeon but its locked.
The main story missions are pretty much dungeons. That gate is for a side mission later in the game and it's just another section of the beach.

Yeah JRPGs used to have shitty mini games and card games. It's not too bad when they are entirely optional. Like in Yakuza: played 6 of those games but never did karaoke.

I think I'm finally gonna start Rebirth this weekend. Just gotta wrap up the last dungeon in Infinite Wealth and we're game.

Am I the only one who loves combat with Aerith? It's so simple, but I just love ranged attacks.

She was my favourite in the first part and she's my favourite in this one. Magnify + Magic Up + First Strike ftw. Her wards are totally busted and I love them.

Also anyone who doesn't like mini games in JRPGs has no soul. Except that dodging 200 lightning bolts bullshit which is perfectly understandable.

I just finished it after 101 hours.
Great gameplay, poorly told plot.
I especially hated the ending. What a way to overcomplicate something that was so simple in the original.
Also, considering the amount of unnecessary filler that Remake and Rebirth pile on, I'm now more than convinced that this remake project failed to justify being a trilogy.

Yea I'm starting to feel like that only 40 hours in, I'm enjoying it but man some of the Gongaga Jungle sections are feeling like such a slog, I wanna just get through it

And the game loop now is pretty much

  1. New Area
  2. Story Mission
  3. Side Missions
  4. Chocobo unlock
  5. Towers
  6. Moogle Shrooms
  7. Intel Fights
  8. Summon Springs

Rinse and repeat, I'm at Cosmo Canyon now, I've done this exact loop 4 or 5 times now, its getting grating

Now I know its a RPG, so some of this side stuff is expected but the game tries to be a linear game, open world and a RPG all at the same time, so it feels off in that regard, its still a solid 9/10 for me so far though

Can I not fast travel from one region to another? Currently in Junon, and I can fast travel anywhere there. But I'm trying to travel to Grasslands and it's not letting me. Is that for story reasons right now or the game just won't let me?

You have to do the Chocobo mission to unlock the fast travel through the mines.

I'm just about fed up with the gameplay loop. I just want to progress the story...
yes for sure. I normally play these new games back to back until I finish them every single day. I get back from work, play until 1-2am and back to sleep.
Not with this one. I got burned out around 40 hours in.
I did 100% of grasslands and almost all of junon (only skipped protorelic and crows nest quest since protorelic quest in grasslands was a fucking waste of time).
Then after that, I enjoyed my time with the story and after reaching next open world area, I only did 30-40% of the stuff.
Costa del sol was a good relax minigames area and I kinda enjoyed that... and then it's open world opened and I was like "f no" and did very little of it.
And after that you go to ANOTHER MINI GAMES area for hours. and after that another open area... even the car didn't change it much for me. It's too slow and getting in/out is a chore. I felt the need to skip open world stuff again.
I really enjoy story and characters (at least most of them) but I dislike open world fluff. It's optional and I am not underleveled too much yet, so maybe it's ok.

That way or another, 52 hours in and I am playing every 2nd day, only few hours.
For remake, I played until the game ended.
I am not sure what is it exactly yet since when i turn the console on, I am playing but I lost the drive "oh god I have to get back home and play this".... and the cait seath level fucking destroyed my energy even more. Fluff fluff fluff.
edit: yes, do unlock chocobo in each area (pain in the ass) and do the towers on my path or in the vicinity.
edit2: I had more chill time with hogwarts legacy last year. It's open world was less of a burden. FF16 also but it was a dmc game essentially. I wouldn't say it was open world
edit3: I almost forgot - red trial was terrible too. I am starting to think, the game goes downhill a ton after costa del sol beach scene

I really do like the story and especially Zack parts. These moments are so ominous and the music is beautiful. Like the world is really ending in his reality.

Btw.... Red 13 voice change, changes his entire character. he is now a stupid kid and was a great character before... was this in original? It's so bad and unnecessary

Yeah, seems like an overreaction to me, a bit soft and a tad blurry, really isn't all that bad. Graphics is much worse with the way it runs on oled, but to each their own

To be able to travel between regions? That's odd. Which mission?

Just go unlock the chocobo for the region. Narratively, you can't cross the marsh without a chocobo and your chocobo didn't come with you through the mines. Get the chocobo unlocked for Junon and you will be told that he can take you through a different path back to the Grasslands.

I don't know about them, but based on what I've played myself, the Performance mode is way too soft and blurry and basically kills a lot of the finer detail in the game's world.

The only thing lacking in the Graphics mode is a per-camera motion blur, otherwise it's pretty much locked and doesn't compromise visuals.

Jesus. Ok now I'm about 130 hours in. Still have not finished it haha. Always something new to do.

I think I now managed to S rank all the minigames (including hard modes) , did all the side quests, did all the crafting.
So finally, I should be ready to finish it by tomorrow. Took me way longer than expected. I guessed solid 70-80 hours. I'm a whole Yakuza game later now.

While it can be frustrating to S rank all the minigames, I must say I did have a lot of fun with it and mastering them felt really good. I've never done so many different things to such an extend in another game.
In the end, after mastering a minigame, it was almost always easy to replicate the victory, that means is was not dependent on pure luck, though there are some mechanics that drove me slightly mad:

- The Cactuar gates in the chocobo races. On some tracks you could not see them from far away, so you never knew when they would close. Frustrating when its your last lap and you run into one and lose.
- The dodge vs block mechanic in the 3D brawler. It was never explained when Cloud would block and when he would dodge. Blocking is really annoying because it does not open up the enemy to counter attacks and fills their ATB bar. This is especially frustrating against Sephiroth, who only needs 3 hits to get his limit. This was the hardest minigame challenge of them all. All the other ones could be done with some strategy and pattern learning
- Hard mode on Gears and Gambits was actually really fun. Thought it might be more frustrating, but after the first one on hard I kinda just figured it out to an extend where the other 3 weren't as hard anymore. First tried the third challenge even.
- The toad fight in the battle arena against the bomber was kinda bullshit. I mean I did figure out a way to "cheese" it. Or maybe that was the intend? Hmm. But I dont like it when you have to do 4 simple fights and then one brutal last fight to fuck you up (there are other examples like Corel region intel 2). There are other hard fights in there, but you could always come up with a strategy to make it easier and faster.
- Also fuck every NPC that thinks they have to keep talking to me when I just want to get out of the menu to change my materia setup (looking at you Chad)

The difficulty of the last proto relic mission was insane. Fighting 3 boss fights against double summons. Duuuude. That mission was not meant for casuals or I am just fucking bad at this game haha. Drove me slightly insane at some points and took me way too long. But felt super satisfying to figure the fights out on my own in the end. Its always good when after beating it you're just like "Yeah ok, wasnt that hard. Just had to the thing and gid gud". Gilgamesh felt almost easy after that, just more of an endurance fight. Also Battle at the Big Bridge. Fuck yeah.



And yeah I'm sure, over time people come up the biggest cheese strats to make these fights easy. I wonder how much damage level 3 limit breaks do against these summons.

However....why the heck can I not craft the genji armor stuff in my first playthrough. I mean I went through all that, including crafting every single item in the game to unlock the transmutations, but in order to craft it you need materials from enemy drops in hard mode.... The benefits are not even that great that you couldnt use them in your first playthrough. Apart from the break damage limit its more of a risk reward thing.


Despite some of these criticism I had immense fun doing it all. As someone who basically is part of the guys in here who say "I JUST WANT THE FUCKING STORY, STOP THROWING SO MUCH CONTENT AT ME". For this game I wanted to do it all and it was great.

Pretty much agreed overall. Though trying to 100% is driving me nuts... Some of those end game VR challenges are just insane. Slowly making my way through them though.

I gave up on the Brutal and Legendary VR Missions. It's weird that these are the same people who made Remake, because that game's endgame challenges weren't even close to being as difficulty as these. It's because they come in the form of Gauntlets that makes them bullshit. Nothing like having your player feel like they're wasting their time after dying and losing 20 minutes.

I think someone on the development team was going through a divorce.

I finally made it through the 4th brutal. I only changed one materia. 5th I've gotten to the end three times now.. going to give it another shot tomorrow. I really want that accessory.. the third magnify was nice. And I'm putting off doing the last two chapters because of how many fights happen with no MP regeneration.

Yeah I was making it to the later stages of the 4th brutal and then I basically just had enough. Never been a fan of the Survival/Gauntlet format in games.

I'm only on Chapter 5 and I do like the game overall, but have a few nitpicks, mainly related to padding and deviations.

Loved the remade town, they've all been done nicely so far. But it felt very bizarre that after the march Rufus forgave Avalanche and wasn't interested in reclaiming Aerith/Red. IIRC that was quite the departure from the OG and was wondering why and where they were going with it. Only for them to them become wanted again 5 minutes later- so no point. I'd have preferred it if Rufus exposes them LIVE on stage and is about to publicly punish/execute them, then Yuffies assassination attempt caused a ruckus in which Cloud and co escape via that mini dungeon descent heading for the boat (but with your normal party)

Good for you. I envy the dedication but Christ, why would you put yourself through those mini games again and again :p

Like any good EA executive would say, it fills me with a sense of pride and accomplishment xD

No but for real, I dedicated this entire vacation to this game. I wont have this amount time for the next coming years (!) so I wanted to really sink my teeth into a game one last time before that and since FF7 is my favorite, there was no better game to do this. Made me feel like a teenager again and I really appreciate all the things this game does right.

Again, I totally understand why people would not want to do this, since I am mostly ignoring these side activities in games as well, but I also think its unfair to criticize the game for offering more content to the people who want it and I honestly think that a lot of these games are really fun, maybe not to the extend that you'd want to S rank them all, but at least some of them.

And today is the day, I'll try to finish it this evening haha. Looking forward to some crazy mindfuck moments!

The issue is more it pads things out too much, I mentioned earlier here about the game loop for each area, it becomes checklisty over decent content at some point, for me it was Cosmo Canyon, the 6th time I had to do the same things as I did for 5 other areas, it ruins the flow a bit

Don't get me wrong, I'm still doing most of it anyway, but the pacing gets destroyed

For example in Chapter 10, there is a section with Bugenhausen where you have to go to the observatory and get some explanation about the Planet etc. But to get the actual cutscene you have to run up and down the bulding looking for things to look at that explains how a telescope works

Why? Its a fucking telescope, I get the idea! Why waste 10-15 mins of running round looking for the places I needed to just look at, I wasn't finding pieces to build it or anything (which would be the same tbh) just make it a cutscene and be done with it, speed up the pace a little bit in areas

Just moving the camera left and right feels jarring in graphics mode

If you're constantly switching between modes, you'll notice it of course. But just leave it on Graphics mode and your eyes will adjust after 10~ minutes of play.

Yes, the Performance mode in this one is way better in terms of average FPS compared to FF16's, but the hit to the visuals is far too great. Like I said above, it just kills detail in the open world.

And the worst part is that it's not the games resolution, it's Square's terrible post process that makes it look extra blurry.
