Xbox business Showcase Announced for February 15

What I'm saying is that Microsoft had to make decisions about the future of Xbox as part of the process of closing the largest tech deal in history. They didn't buy ABK for $70b and then suddenly realize after closing that Xbox and Game Pass numbers weren't where they needed to be. They didn't try a Hail Mary of dumping as much of the ABK catalog as possible onto Game Pass to try to win the holiday. They knew then that this was the path they were going because they knew there was no way Xbox alone could sustain the revenue stream they were buying.

When bumped up against the histrionics of the past week it could seem like underselling what's happening, but I don't think it is. I think the writing was on the wall the whole time.

Well in that context I agree. However, I don't think it was a binary, on/off type of decision. As in, they didn't consider going multiplatform as a publisher months or years back and were gung-ho on that path no matter what. At some point, it likely just started off as a basic option, and they probably still weighed the possibility of things going better for the gaming brand as a more traditional business.

But over time, the consensus to commit towards being a more outright multiplatform publisher gained more and more support in reasoning, as the console side of the business continued to fall short and worsen in condition. I'd say back in 2021 for example, Microsoft likely felt perfectly fine as only a "limited" multiplatform publisher with select games (mainly live-service/GaaS titles) being on other consoles, and locking everything else down to Xbox & PC only. The internal memos kind of support this.

However with the consoles underperforming, Game Pass stagnating and then the costs of ABK adding onto things, higher-ups likely have finally decided it's time to commit to being a full multiplatform publisher, and that's where things are now.

They've assembled the trifecta of corporate suit losers:
Mr. Career Moment
Ms. 'Second Run' Baldur's Gate 3 is worth about $5 million to get on Game Pass
Mr. "Spend Sony out of business"

They just got Microsoft to make drop $70 billion and have no organic growth.
Xbox is basically an albatross around Microsoft's neck right now weighting down AI and Cloud segments.

Podcast either means it's not as big as people were making out or... they want people to not feel like it is a big deal.

It’s like the top three people at Xbox. It’s got to be something. They have to know how wild the rumors and melt downs have been since announcing this. They could have just said no already.

A podcast will let them ramble on and fluff up the fans and brand history before dumping games on PlayStation.

Agreed. And I don’t see what the problem is with any of it… People just got giddy and thought the sky was falling (which upset some and excited others).

I’m hoping to hear news of XCloud coming to more devices (Apple TV app please, and expand beyond the newer Samsung TVs) and getting beefed up a bit, or news on the Ubisoft cloud deal, which has been really quiet, along with the ABK to Game Pass news that hasn’t materialised yet.

I think they’ll expand on a leadership reshuffle too.

Hopefully once it’s out in the open people here will calm the fuck down a bit, or at lease get moderated a bit more strongly. Been a complete anti Xbox shitshow on here the last week - painful to read
So you want people to be banned for reacting to a all the external leaks, because they are negative to a brand you like?
*cringe*

Or because they doing math and predicting outcomes you don't like?

What exactly have you seen that is against the rules about the whole Xbox ordeal that requires stronger moderation?

You can always report posts or contact a mod, like Faust Faust or Mod of War Mod of War ,instead of playing victim.
If it's painful to read, well... Then don't read it..

This is the single biggest shift in the video games industry for decades… and you think it shouldn’t be talked about?

How about you blame Xbox and Phil for it all, instead of sniping at a bunch of video game fans, who are doing nothing wrong in being pretty animated about the third biggest player in the industry changing to a third party model?

what was the tactic specifically at the time for that? I wasn't around on forums much at that time.
Honestly, it was much what you're seeing now with this multiplatform rollout for Xbox.

At that E3 (2015), they started the initiative by masking the bad news (increased PC support) with good news (Backwards Compatibility coming to Xbox One). In the beginning, PC support went from Win10 with some Steam releases here and there, and as the back catalog that Xbox had at that time hit the Win10 store, they increased the porting efforts to Steam as the years ticked by, especially after Game Pass happened in 2017/2018. From there, delayed ports to Steam went from uncommon to day & date releases.

You're going to see much of the same strategy here - reassurance that the hardware position is not going away or changing, with some announcements for it. You'll likely hear Spencer and Co. try to assure folks that focusing on exclusives for the platform is still a priority for Xbox, but with time and success in this multiplatform release schedule, you'll see the things go increasingly day 1 multiplat, until folks completely forget it was ever a debate on what the strategy would be. This is text-book MegaCorp PR.

Third time that P. Spencer has "liked" a Tweet that affirms or supports the arrival of an XBOX handlehad.... Something tells me that the announcement of an "Xboxdek" is beginning to be more plausible.

Personally I think it should be born with the same idea as Steamdek if It want succes.
An Xbox OS but running under Windows where you can activate Steam, apps emulators.... Also crossbuy with XSS and XSX. That is, share a catalog.

Do they realize going multiplatform won't save them ? and saying this announcement on the podcast even more failure.

Absolutely. I think that an Xbox handheld would be a brilliant move. Just hope they are allowed to more tightly integrate Windows for the handheld form factor. I'd be onboard day one for that.

Among other things, also because it would be the type of hardware that could most easily and quickly be made available on the market.
- Optimization and compatibility would not be a problem.

- Neither do the support demands

- And you could announce it whenever you want as it is a differentiated product from tradicional console (XSeries). Although I wouldn't expect it for an event like Thursday's in the middle of a podcast. On Thursday I only expect a confirmation of commitment to the console hardware, a roadmap and some note of the type of products they work on. E3 evento maybe?

Who knows, maybe it could even be used to test the waters and see how a Windows+Xbox OS console/PC would work.

A podcast?

Zero respect shown.
Yes I agree. Phil and his cronies dont give a rats ass sadly. He sheepishly tweeted last week and made everyone wait and then today he makes sure to make people wait even more til the 15th. This podcast is just a way for him and his two lackeys to not have to show their faces. Sad and so shady but should be no surprise to anyone. MS management are pathetic and this whole week long debacle proves it. Whatever they spew i’m sure it won’t make to many hardcore xbox fans very happy. I could be wrong but we will see. Either way trust has been completely shaken or lost by many and it’s their own fault.

you are right about people forgetting because I don't remember any drama about the PC initiative.

But i think now the situation is different. i dont know if this brand can continue with this cycle of good news followed by bad news. or/and constant uncertainty for every game they show.

if this decision is coming from financial pressures. they have to be pretty clear what their intentions are. if not, we will have another crisis in the future.

because it doesn't matter what they say in the podcast, it is going to be pretty rough for the console and brand for the rest of their generation

Other than the fact a lot of the OG rumours have already come true, do you really think that many of the Xbox influencers would jump ship so fast, who are in regular discords with those in the know?

Those influencers are paid to be the biggest fans, they’re not leaving for no reason or false rumours.

There is an official xbox podcast, maybe thats it. The one Larry Hryb used to host, but they changed things up a bit. With guests in the studio. Like the one below

Ok so where are we getting the term Business Showcase? That implies like a press briefing. This is a podcast

I can’t wait for the Xbox handlehad.

I bet they are going to play it off like "what's the big deal, we already have multiple games on other platforms like Minecraft ..."

Then why were you just pretending this was just Pentiment? And also according to Tom Warren, author of the article, there is another "big one" that he is not at liberty to disclose.
That statement was made before the Starfield hysteria.

Just had an epiphany. The moment Xbox one was announced is when I built a gaming pc. I LOVED my 360. It’s now so clear the moment they fucked up.
