HBO Original | The Last of Us - Review Thread

I think we see the big difference here between TLOU and Halo.

TLOU > PlayStation Productions + HBO + Craig Mazin (Chernobyl)
Halo > Amblin TV + Paramount + Steven Kane and Kyle Killen (???)

Ultimate the Halo showrunners didn't respect the source material and have since left the show. Paramount renewed for a second season, but it's because they don't have any content. A second season with new showrunners could be better or they could feel pigeonholed by the first season. Unlikely to bring viewers back regardless and they know it.

You have to have a vision i.e. your own studio, and you need to bring in top talent to produce. We'll ultimately see what Sony does, but they have a lot riding on Horizon and God of War on Netflix and Amazon respectively.
From the reviews, it sounds like the HBO folks didn't adapt so much as they simply relocated, which is the smart play here. What made people want to adapt TLOU to the screen was the game's beloved cinematic story - and the game presented it, for better or worse, as a movie. It's simply smarter to just do that again - why fix what's not broken? This sets them up to run with the TLOU as a franchise, getting off on the right foot, because they can continue with the established blueprint of the games, keeping series fans happy, and bringing in a new audience. It puts pressure on Naughty Dog, however, to keep churning out TLOU games to fuel the HBO series - otherwise its Game of Thrones season 8 again. That's a different conversation, though.

Halo is a different. What made people want to adapt Halo to the screen is money. Halo is a massive franchise - or, at least, it was back when they started making the show. Instead of adapting a story they decided to adapt little more than the name. Unlike HBO, they decided to "fix" what wasn't "broken" because they weren't interested in adapting the story of Halo, they just wanted to make money off its name. Unfortunately, the damage the first season did to the long-term story is catastrophic. There's little that can be done to course correct, so now the show's stuck telling its own story. Which means fans will continue to tear it apart, and mainstream critics are a dice roll. I suspect Season 2 will land with a thud, and the series will be canned.

Oh please plenty of people have argued that Catelyn and Robb trusting the Freys in ASOIAF was uncharacteristic. Especially in the books
I’d say those people are displaying such a primitive understanding that they haven’t understood the books.

Saying ‘I’m upset because a character I liked died, however all of the characters stayed true to themselves and their universe’ is very different to ‘I’m upset because Joel started randomly acting like an imbecile in order to facilitate his death’. I’d probably say it’s down to your immaturity if you can’t understand the difference between the two.
Joel isn't some infallible genius. Bro walked into an opening door and then fell off a balcony and nearly died in TLOU1 like he'd been drinking too much moonshine

HBO generally doesn't churn out a lot of seasons of shows. There are few outliers.

I think a LOU3 gives you a 3rd season maybe in 2-5 years, which is probably fine for HBO and fine for Naughty Dog.

Game of Thrones only got MORE popular after the red wedding and I think the story in P2 will be told better in tv format.

What do i have to buy to see this thing in europe? Netflix? Amazon prime? Disney+.
Which company usually brodcast hbo stuff in your country? I dont think hbo puts their stuff on rival streaming services.

In turkey fro example we dont have hbo max but hbo stuff always gets brodcasted by either bein or blutv. This will be on blutv.

If they make another series, it will be based on the time inbetween the first game and the second game,
they are not going to kill Joel off at the start of season 2

And they are also not going to make a third season that carry's on the story from the second game, Naughty Dog will want to write the story of the next game themselves, not be bound to what a TV show decided happens

You must be in this mindset that tv shows like this have to come out every year.

Even if LOUP3 came out in 2027, that would probably be fine for a show like this. With Season 1 coming out in 2023 and season 2 most likely coming out in 2025.

I wasn't really planning on watching this, given that it's supposedly a direct adaptation of the first game and the dlc. But from what I'm reading now, and episode 3, think I'll give this a go. Interesting thoughts all around from non-gamer critics.

Well i'll see in five days.
I don't trust reviews anymore, so either the first episode will hook me, or i'll pass.

Not saying this is (goijg to be) crap - i just don't believe in any reviews anymore, no integrity.

Haters having a hard time coping with more TLOU/Druckmann success I see, as expected.

Even going as far as saying he had nothing to do with the show LOL

Next up is Factions 2.

“I don’t trust these Faction reviews, paid shills, hopefully they release the beta this week and prove me wrong, will be more trusting of actual users”

TV TV TV done right.

Michael Scott Wink GIF

Nobody cares that you played the remake though. They clearly didn't make this for you. Also not everyone plays video games, this can also appeal to a wider audience.

That's really it.
Yep, this is for people like my girlfriend who have a passing interest in the last of us as a franchise but will never touch a video game.

Just watched some of these trailers and they really nailed the choice of actor for the roles other than Joel and Elly. The actress playing Tess looks like she really captures that "hard life beauty."

. . .definitely gonna be a good watch.

Damn... reviews are surprisingly outstanding so far

How so? The talent involved with this - both in front of and behind the scenes - I would have been surprised if critics weren't taken by the show. If there is fertile ground in the source material (and TLOU is more than fertile), nothing stopping someone from making a good "video game movie/show."

Never has a use of this GIF be such an appropriate response. Like what a statement to make; I guess that's what happens when you take the "Us vs. Them" schtick too seriously - you see compromised folks in everything.

Pretty much but I'm sure many that play the game can also enjoy it. Can't really complain if they do a good job with it. I know I was pretty bummed out with those Resident Evil movies.

there is no way in hell is as bad as Rings of Power, She-Hulk or Willow.

And as you know: "forces always act in equal but opposite pairs"

the opposite force will be strong in this one.

I just dont get how you cast an actress significantly less attractive than the video game character. The actress is fine, she was good in GOT, but looks nothing like Ellie.

I like Pedro and he looks closer to Joel but still not great at face value, going from early reviews it doesn't appear to matter.
why do you want a 14 year old to be attractive, pretty weird of you
