[Tom Henderson] God of War Ragnarok is 40 Hours in Length

For a glorious moment i thought it was 40 hours of main campaign alone, fuck i was expecting at least 25-30 hours of only main story.

Seems a bit short when we have all the realms to explore, but i probably gonna double that amount anyway.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
20 hour main story is pretty much bang on what GoW18 was I think, and that felt good, so I'm pretty happy with that. 40-50 hour platinum sounds great.

I've never understood the obsession with knowing the anticipated playtime of a game, together with a full breakdown of total gameplay time and cutscene times.

To me, it's reductive and misses the point.

E.g.

I can play 30 hours of Assassin's Creed side quests and it feels like 80 hours because I'm bored outta my fucking mind. While in the same vein, I can play 30 hours of The Witcher 3 side quest and it feels like 3 hours because I'm so glued to the screen.

Perceived play time is relative, while enjoyment from those same hours spent playing is pretty objective (on a per gamer basis).

I can play and finish the 10-12 hour campaign of COD: Infinite Warfare, never touch the MP, and feel like I got my money's worth from the game. Meanwhile, I can play 80 hours of some copy-pasta open-world clone no.9919182 and still not find the fun I was supposed to.

So to me, playtime is irrelevant to the value I put on a gameplay experience. Quality is what's important.
This 100%

In fact, I believe that the entire industry got ruined the moment someone took a game’s length as a measuring standard. Worst of all, they use it to correlate quality.

And also the reason why we have 100+ hours of pure filler games like Assassin’s Creed.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
15-20 hrs seems great to me, sick of overly padded games with lots of back tracking.

Too long IMO. Action-adventure games should be between 12 to 20 hours. I start losing interest after the 20 hour mark.

This is what we get due to the bang for the buck mentality. More means better unfortunately.
They did say that they were ending the Norse saga in this game rather than splitting into 2 and 3. So maybe at the halfway-mark they'll include a credits screen and a message saying "You've unlocked GoW: OdinShatter" or something. And then you can pick up the next bit when you're ready. All in the same game!

TLOU2 was the max length for a sp game for me, but I had hoped, still hope, GOWII is equally long. There is a lot of ground to cover if the norse saga is done in only two entries.

IMO, they should pull a "the dark tower" move and
Have Kratos start his journey against the Greek gods again, the player realizing that there is no redemption for him, caught in an endless loop of rage and personal loss...

I'm fine with this and would be fine if was even shorter. I prefer most games in the 10-20 hour range (for completing the story/campaign) depending on genre.

I’m unsure how to feel about this.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the last game in the Norse saga? So you have to wrap up Freya, Thor, AND Odin in 20 hours? Not to mention digging deeper into the Grand Canyon-sized hole that is Krato’s time after GoW 3. Plus any new characters they throw in.

I don’t know, that seems like A LOT to do satisfyingly in 20 hours, though I guess we’ll have to see.

That is cool but you need the following boss fights:

Thor
Odin
Freya
Surtur
At least 1 other notable God maybe Heimdall, Freyr, or Vidar
Fenrir
Hel
Nidhogg

Maybe a couple other famous monsters like the rat or the 8 legged horse.

And there are so many more norse monsters that a DLC covering the interim between GOW 2018 and Ragnarok of about 12 hours, fast paced and no open world crap, to finish off the norse pantheon would be so sweet if we could get it in 2 years.

If they don't do stuff like this it would be unfulfilling to move on to another realm. Like with the Greek stuff there were so many games that we felt pretty satisfied we did pretty much what we wanted.

Too long imo for a single player driven game that isn’t an RPG. Going to play but usually around the 25 hour mark for cinematic games it feels like a grind. TLOU2 was about 30 and became a grind around the 20ish hour mark. These games are designed around fighting groups of enemies which after a while becomes repetitive so being that long is never something I’d prefer.

Edit: main quest is 20 hours. Scratch all I said. Perfect length.
? 30?
Tlou 2 is around 24 hours.

Represent.

It needs to be as long if not longer than TLOU 2. Its the last game in the mythology and theres a lot to wrap up. The final act better not be rushed.

20 hours is perfect for a more linear action sstyle game, and if you want more there is a lot of optional content. I assume the optional stuff will be better fleshed out this time around also and wont just be like horde modes and stuff.

I actually didn’t mind how Cyberpunks main storyline was relatively short and had expanded side content. As long as the side content is fulfilling and has more lore attached to it thats fine. They want people to expereince the full story and not give up after 30+ hours. Which makes sense.

I loved god of war but i really did not want the main story to be 40 hours minimum thats longer than ghost of tsushima and horizon which are open world games

Yeah, this is what I'm a bit worried about... The game needs to deal with Thor, Odin, Freya, whoever else is still alive, the entire actual Ragnarök event (which is supposed to be the end of the world), the fate of Kratos and Boy, etc.

These huge games with needless tons of side stuff. I don't want open world or metroidvania crap always.
Sure, I love original GOW but I skipped all Valkyries and some side quests. I don't feel like doing that stuff as it does not flow with the story and pacing... "oh let me do some side missions now".

I've had whole Saturday playing some old 360 games on 360 and I miss these 7-10 hours normal fucking games like Gears 1,2,3, lost planet, halo, shadows of the damned and so on.
Now, AAA game got to be 30-40 hours long and possibly open world.
Instead of bad side crap, make the main game better. I want to move main events forward

Well, at least tlou2 was normal linear single player game. Just long.
Death Stranding was open world but without much side crap. So it's not all bad.
And if Gow2 is not bad, I will be able to skip uninteresting stuff

edit: 10-20 hours is perfect for single player games. Uncharted 4 is 15 hours and it's really good like that. So I am fine with 15 hours of game and 3 hours of cutscenes. Just dont make me do side crap. It's a waste.
Death Stranding had 40 hours game and 10 hours of cutscenes :p

if it has more than 2min of forced slow walking imma be real mad
They didn't mention it because it still theoretically counts as gameplay but you're easily gonna spend another 6 hour out of those 16 hours of gameplay walking and listening to your annoying kid.

20h for the main story? Hmmm sounds rushed if they’re going to wrap up the story with this game. Maybe they changed thier minds and w’ll get a trilogy instead.

I'm fine with that tbh, I just hope they've done away with the trials areas, or repetitive valkyrie/troll stuff. Think it made the 2018 release feel longer than it was.

Some of the new monsters look awesome though so I'm pretty confident they've built on the previous game amazingly well.

Yeah, 20 hours for what could have been another 2 games instead of one feels kinda small.

They already rushed the third act of forbidden west, i can't survive another rushed final act.

20h for main story + 20 hours for extras seems like the perfect length for me.

Just give it two years and Sony will make a remake ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
20h for gameplay, more 20h for obligatory walking sessions

Modern God of War is RPG-Lite, so you’ll be throwing your axe at buckets, and solving chest puzzles for half the game.

What if you run the entire time? There’s always the slow boat rides where you’re talking about whatever is happening in the world. There’s always those slow downs whenever you approach or enter a new point of interest. I find myself finishing sooner just cause I like to get my adrenaline going.
