Xbox Series S storage - what the hell were Microsoft thinking?

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Alright I am late to the party, but I'm rocking a gaming rig and a one x, and thought about upgrading to play my console games better.

I don't give a crap about 4k and all that graphic whoring. Just want a console that is a bit future proof - which series s isn't.

I don't even care about a disc drive which made series s a decent choice, until I noticed the systems true bottleneck - the disc.

Because who the hell thought that a digital only system should have 364 GB available storage for games, in a time where these games are around 100 gigs these days, and it's probably going to get worse throughout the generation.

A series x costs 530 euro in my country, and since I already have a gaming rig I wouldn't mind the little brother s, which could run the games I for some reason don't play on my pc.

The series s costs 320 euro, which is more affordable, but if you want to upgrade the crippled storage, which I know I would, given I like to have a lot of games installed (which I already have on my 864 GB one x), it just doesn't seems possible on the series s.

Now, we can thankfully upgrade the storage, but that costs 240 euro, which end up being the same price as the one x anyway.

What the hell were Microsoft thinking with this storage nonsense.

The system is not crippled by its weaker graphics, its crippled because you have almost no hard drive space.

Edit -
Another thing is, having a one x already, it's a mixed bag.

It even runs 360 games in one s mode and not enhanced.

I mean you are complaining a cheap console cuts corners to be cheap?

You get what you pay for.

it was either skimp on the SSD size, or put a standard HDD in there and gimp the whole generation to needing to support HDD speeds again. I’m glad they made the choices they did

Especially considering they are pushing the S as their perfect Gamepass console?

You don't even need a HDD for most of the big Gamepass games...

They could of also made it 6TF's.
If we add how much it costs to upgrade the storage, one would be better off with just getting a X.

I have the same issues with my xbox one S. 1tb isnt even enough, if you are an xbox user with gamepass, you will need 5tb of storages. MS needs to make that storage cheaper, or make a cheaper storage.

Much like the days of the Xbox 360 Core, why do people buy these consoles knowing their limitations? MS knows that they get to advertise a lower price and that most customers who buy these consoles will still end up eating the cost for more storage. It's a win/win for MS.

"Next gen"
This is lame. It's 299 (and I've seen it cheaper). It plays all next gen games, all the same BC stuff, and it's extremely affordable. Taking inflation into account it might be one of the best console values ever seen if not THE best. Not everyone cares about having 4k visuals, but they DO want access to software. Why is that a problem? If you want the X as most people on GAF will, then get the X. The existence of the S doesn't detract from the X and it opens up the ecosystem to more people who don't want to spend as much.

And yeah, it's still next gen.

I personally do not feel the 1tb in the series x is enough.

I have two 4tb external hdds plugged in and a 2tb SSD nvme Seagate card plugged in too.

A little over kill, but I like my games ready to access.

Are you feeling alright?, lol

Anyway you can still fit 5 or 6 big games on it, or 4 big games plus 3 or 4 AA and Indies. Its not ideal but if you have fast internet then its fine.
I dont know why people need to have like 10 games installed at any one time. I have multiple SSD;'s in my PC but i mainly use my 500gb one (464gb real space), and thats enough for a few games at any one time, i havent had to touch my other drives yet.

You can plug in any external HDD and use it for cold storage for all your games. You can then easily transfer them to the internal storage when you want to play them, takes a few minutes for even the biggest games. Storage is a complete non-issue, hasn't been for years.

I was about to say I'm not sure why people still complain but I do know.

Haha.

I like the Xbox man. I like everything. Just because I knock a lot of things they are doing doesn't mean I don't like them. I just don't think they are doing what they could be doing, but that's neither here nor there when it comes to this. If I see something I think doesn't make sense I'll speak up, and I think the S is a great device and makes a butt load of sense. People bashing it because it's not top of the line annoys me, because that's not the point. Being a solid machine for a very affordable price (for most) is the point. And it doesn't hold back the X, as I've always said, so what is there to complain about? Mind boggling.

It's okay if you're fine with things being subpar. However, this is what I call a bad user expeirence. This process should be transparent to the customer.

If i didnt already have my PC permanantly hooked up to my TV anyway, i would def of bought an S for my TV.
And yeah the machine is fine, and if you have a 1080p tv then a lot of the games wont look much different to the XSX versions anyway.

Let's say you play cod vanguard for multiplayer, that's easily 62 GB.

Forza horizon 5 is there as well, it's 103 GB.

You already wasted half the storage on two games.

But you're also into RPGs, so you are also tossing elden ring in there, which is another 60 gigs.

3 games, and you're up to 224 gigs.

Now, I can probably put 5 triple a games today, but I wouldn't be surprised if games tend to get a lot bigger later down the line.

But yeah, an external disc could be used for games that's not requiring internal, but I'd guess its just about time as well before that becomes an issue.

They were thinking they were going to launch cloud gaming on GamePass a year later. So ppl wouldnt need to download a million games anymore

The future is Xcloud game streaming. Downloading is so 2019.

Yeah, no. I have game pass ultimate, cloud gaming graphics looks like shit, graphical glitches and if I recall correct then it is one s performance you get.

And xcloud can't really be the next big thing, when you lose access to games when they leave game pass. You can't even play them if you bought them through xcloud.

Microsoft assumes that those who choose to buy a digital only console have the bandwidth/speed to download games without much fuss.

You wouldn't buy an electric car if you have nowhere to charge it right?

Though perhaps Microsoft overestimates the level of common sense that the average gamer has, judging by the complaints about the Series S.

I was just going to say that they are probably hoping people try out the cloud gaming which works pretty well if you have decent internet.

I do feel like I have to manage the drive too often, but it's not a big deal and I still have about a dozen games installed at the moment.

I'm skeptical there will be a title that is too big to play locally on the XSS. That would likely be due to lazy developers than there being too much game content.
