David Jaffe: "People are gonna lose their f*****g minds!" About a New PlayStation Game He's Been Told About

God I hate it when people ascribe my behavior w/a desire for things that young kids and young adults care for (clout, relevancy, etc.)

I put such a premium on honesty and genuine discourse that it just grosses me out to be accused of doing things for reasons I clearly am not.

Ask yourself: what the fuck do I need 'clout' for? What am I going to do with a whole heaping help of 'clout'?

I think it bothers me too because I can't get past some people's cynicism; like they're life experiences (and I get it) have trained them to trust almost NO ONE.

For what it's worth, I'd LOVE for people to watch my streams and videos but I'm not going to lie and pander in order to reach that goal. I'm all about empty elevator syndrome (look it up if you are confused) and the people who eventually hop on board are there for ONLY the right reasons.

Anyway, you will- as is your right- continue to believe what you want. But I felt like I wanted to address it as it pops up every couple of months or so and it rubs me the wrong way.

Thx!

Haha, well said!

People should check out Gabbin+Games in podcast form if they fancy something new to listen to. I think you're doing a fantastic job with it.

I'm not looking to argue with you here, but its evident you clearly understand clout chasing would directly impact your stream and video views which directly impact your livelihood. Let's not pretend like you would have absolutely no reason to clout chase. It's been a while since God of War and Twisted Metal.

But, like I said, if you aren't going to say what it is, then don't say anything at all. Be more responsible with your position and control your impulses. It's shit like this that got everyone to believe that we were going to see a Switch Pro this year. A completely made up rumor gained credence and validity when notable influencers got behind it for self gain, and tons of gamers who don't even follow this sub-culture of gaming leaks and rumors were misled into expecting a Switch Pro this year.

Just look at how your tweets turned into an 11 page thread here (and on pretty much every other gaming forum), when you didn't even say much, while even hedging yourself from any potential backlash with the whole "maybe next week / maybe not" caveat. Like, yeah, no shit Sony is working on some exciting stuff for the future.

Lots of I have a bigger D than you so I’m going to try and counter argue everyone. People need to take a chill pill. He’s an industry insider and is sharing something publically that he could have probably been banned on platforms for or maybe sued. Then everyone asks why there’s no leaks or insiders? This happens in the pop forums too.

OT: I hope it’s Metal Gear being bought by Sony and remade by blue point and Kojima. I also hope it’s RESISTANCE remade from the ground up by blue point and insomniac. And maybe the original KILLZONE. Any of those three would be amazing.

If Jaffe gave a shit about clout he would be burning bridges with John Garvin and Jeff Ross. But he didn't push or prod when they said there were things at the time they could not talk about because of NDA. He's not doing streams on a nightly basis and going off of things he hears from friends he talks to.

The only clout he brings up is when he's comparing something to his own experiences with Sony on whatever topic he's talking about.

Seriously dude, there are people I know in this industry that I talk to on a weekly basis, I dont ask them what they are working on. I ask how's your brother, or hows your folks back home. Sometimes they tell me things when they are excited about work.

But I don't try to chase the clout on here. I just say vaguely things I've heard and knowing how gullible I am a lot of my friends like to talk shit to me just to have a laugh when scrolling through Neogaf.

Leave JAffe alone, guy is honestly trying to build something pretty cool that doesn't cater to the goblins over at resetera.

Leave him be.

Don't you think it's more up to you to control your impulses in response to tweets like Jaffe's?

If people didn't get so invested and caught up in random tweets, then there wouldn't be a problem. davidjaffe davidjaffe just threw the tweet out there because he heard something exciting was on the way. Cool. That sounded good to me, but I'm not going to waste much time or energy trying to guess what it is. I just don't need to. It'll all come out eventually.

This ain't about a problem with people 'clout chasing'. It's more a problem with people getting waaaaay to caught up in this shit, and going overboard when they don't get all the details they so desperately want.

The game Jaffe talked about will turn up sooner or later. In the meantime, who cares if we don't have more information about it yet? Just a bit more patience is needed with this stuff, and a bit less investment. Plenty of games to be going on with that are out there right now.

Guerilla Games does have a 2nd studio nakih a game since 2018.

As for Killzone suggestion
Killzone 1 did average
Killzone 2 did above average
Killzone 3 flopped
Killzone Shadowfall flopped

Why would Sony waste there budget in a franchise that has had more flops than decent games. The IP isn't exactly something the majority of people are begging to come back. And this is a fact based on sales and critical reception. I think the best they can do for this franchise is just make a remaster for Killzone 2, maybe for PSVR2. But to spend a to of resources for this franchise doesn't make logical sense.

What metric are you using to determine that Killzone 2 did above average while Shadowfall flopped? If you mean the average Metacritic rating, sure it didn’t score as high critically.

But in terms of sales it took Killzone 2 around 7 weeks to sell 1 million copies and the PS3 had already been out for 3 years as far as install base goes. Shadowfall was a launch PS4 game and sold 2.1 million copies in 2 months.

The last 3 Killzones have done fairly similar numbers, like 3 millionish. Depends what your expectations are but really only the first was a flop. It’s not amazing but it’s more than, say, Gears 4.

Critically KZ2 did brilliantly, KZ3 was only a little behind but Shadowfall was bang average.

Yeah financially it doesn't make sense to make a new killzone based on previous titles buuuuuut it's a wholly owned Sony i.p. and with the amount of big money GAAS FPS out there, maybe it'd be worth a punt.... TBF I never played the first ones, my introduction was Shadow fall on PS4 and I loved it, loved the setting, the look and the feel of it not to mention it was an absolute looker, so with all the lore established, the assets made, why not turn it into a COD Warzone/Destiny type game?
Man Shadow Fall multiplayer was so good.

The multiplayer was great, and even the singleplayer campaign is pretty lengthy in comparison with other military shooter campaigns. It had a good story as well. I don’t get the criticism of people who called it a tech demo just because it had cutting edge graphics at the time of release.

I bought with my PS4 around launch, played the first mission, and didn’t touch it again for years. Felt a bit sluggish or slow. Came back to it just earlier this year with the PS5 update and a smooth 60fps and developed a whole new appreciation for it. Wound up getting 100% trophies. It’s a solid 8/10 game but I agree with you the multiplayer is the standout.

Sony now currently have 6 studios making a multiplayer game

Deviation - Black Ops Devs
Haven - Jade Raymond Studio
Naughty Dog - working on Factions
Guerilla Games 2nd Team - Rainbow Six lead
Firewalk - Bungie Devs
Arrowhead Games - Not confirmed but their last game was published by Sony and rumoured to be making a shooter

Out of those we can expect 3 of those to be first person shooters based on the developers previous games. I personally think funding shooters is a waste. I wasn't a fan of PS3 generation with Resistance, Killzone, Haze and random attempted to make a Halo killer. When the 3rd party partners already saturate that market I'd rather Sony keep investing in big budget singeplayer games. If they do a multiplayer game I'd like something completely different such as a GaaS Twisted Metal.

I don’t believe we know that either the Haven or Arrowhead titles are multiplayer.

If the Guerrilla game turned out to be SOCOM as rumoured then that would be quite different from other games on the market just now.

#1- I don't need your advice on when to speak up and when not to. But...thanks?
#2- Regarding this:

That's on you if you think that's what I'm doing. I assure you- and I will show proof at the right time- that that is not at all what I'm doing. But if I tell you how now I will be giving things away that are not mine to give.

Oh God! All the people who fought bravely in the treacherous threads of gaming forums, while being misled by these unscrupulous so-called journalists and insiders, only to meet their doom after all the tears and sweaty thumbs, drowned in the mud of clout!

Man, I'm kinda surprised you respond to stuff like that. I mean, that you give it the time of day and you're pretty nice about it ...

I can't imagine any scenarios where people would lose their minds over a game announcement unless it was an established series from an established developer like a Star Wars game from one of the first party studios.

Looks like he was referring to Abandoned.

Jaffe hits the nail on the head towards the end of this video.

None of Sony's presentations are every made with a bit of flair. You compare it to Xbox and you can tell Xbox spends more time to craft an interesting presentation. The State of Play voiceover presenter bores me to tears. It's fucking dreadful.

Sony needs to flex their entertainment arm of the company on their gaming presentations.

Are you kidding? MS shows are always trying too hard to show off and be some true gamer type presentation. It so obvious and a bit of cringe.

I don’t like State Of Play, I prefer live conferences, but at least Sony keeps it simple and to the point. Like they said, they “let the games do the talking.” As it should be. Especially if you aren’t doing stage conferences.

Their showcases are much better than their State Of Plays.

Fuck that. The last few Xbox conferences cringe level has been off the god damn charts. The gaming industry needs to drop that presentation style altogether. The Battlefield 2042 one was really bad too. It's like a presentation for an infomercial. It's embarrassing.

Doubt it all the rumors have always said Socom and 9ne of the devs tweeted a socom person and has put out hints it's socom.

Jaffe confirmed Guerilla is working on a shooter and it sounds like it's one of the games he knows about and I've heard Jaffe talk about Socom before

I hope it's socom.

Agreed. Here are some of my favorite lines from Phil Spencer's past E3 presentations:

There's nothing wrong with wanting a bit of flair when presenting products or an online show. The State Of Play's always seem to be lacking in that department. Xbox seems to add a touch of that flair to how they present stuff. Even if you keep it simple and to the point, it should be a bit of a spectacle. Sony's games do deliver in spades. I have all Sony's 1st party games on my PS4 and they're quality but its not asking much for them to provide that same level of quality to their online shows.

Xbox may be doing too much and it may be cringe but at least they put in the time and effort with their presentations.

theres no lack of presentation values with Sony’s PlayStation showcase events

Please no.

I want that 40 minutes to be only about games. It's too short already.

They can make a separate videos for interviews and discussions from developer. Nothing wrong with that.

You only make filler content and too much babbling when you have no games to show.

Yeah, not sure I agree here. Xbox shows look like they are made by suits who are trying to be "cool" and they have absolutely no flair whatsoever. The non game segments are bad.

Just have 40 minutes of games, and that's it. Devs talking about the game, sure, that's fine. But yeah we don't need all the talking heads in between. Not at all.

I’d like some talking heads after the show tho. Especially if it comes to proper next gen tech - assuming we even see anything next gen specific.

Are the ign’s etc doing any post show talks?
