Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
This also means Gamepass is portable now.
It's definitely a step up from my current mobile Gamepass solution, an Android phone with Razer Kishi for cloud streaming. This can run games natively and not eat up my data plan while doing it.

Yeah, while we’re still talking about games made for Jaguar CPU and 2013 GPUs….

This thing is releasing in December, as soon as games start targeting the CPUs on these consoles, the show is over.

Still, it’s a good idea and the library will be immense.

Frickin' PCMR, man...

Specs say it can run Flight Sim, okay? Flight Sim.

On paper, it's below but in the range of Xbox Series S, and it's made to display games on an 800p screen. Steam Deck should be fine for this generation of games, at reasonable Min/Max Specs at least. We'll see what happens when games start to really push this next generation of CPUs (it's been 3/4s of a year and not only has nobody done CPU-heavy games but I can't think of any announced for 2022 yet that do anything crazy, so we'll see,) but it's built for being in that ballpark.

Don't worry, it'll play lots of popular PC games like Rocket League and Minecraft and Fortnite (...well, if you install the Microsoft Store and Epic Games Store.)

Proton? What is that?

Steam Play Proton, aka the Proton compatibility layer. It's a Valve-developed branch of WINE with DXVK and other addons (which they also help develop), that makes a great many Windows games playable on Linux with no or minimal configuration necessary. It's integrated into Steam Play, so if you're on Linux you won't even see any difference for compatible games, they'll just play as if they were native.

Site tracking compatibility and tested games here: https://www.protondb.com/

^^ Thank you. I just found them myself via the Steam page.

Reasonable enough. Looks like a mighty portable emulation machine.

Game Pass is massive, would mean you can download locally as well rather than xCloud.

I could even put my iTunes library on this thing. Shit tier laptops are like £400 at the moment.

A portable PS4 for $400? Now why does that sound so familiar? Lol. Seriously though, nice specs and price point. Seem about right for a handheld.

I'm not sure about those controls though. It's hard to fit three sets of inputs onto one bezel, but that is one awkward-looking layout. I'm sure they've tested it all kinds of ways, but I can't help but thinking that one stick and one touchpad could have done the trick.

Oh well, I guess we'll see. Maybe it only looks awkward.

Is 'That Pure Potato'
This is 700g, the Switch is 400g for comparison.

Also the 8hours is for light game streaming and browser usage so it seems a bit of a worry for me.

Probably going to end up buying one sadly

I wonder if it will be possible to simply connect it to a USB C power bank for some extra juice.

I feel like this is going to hit the sweet spot in a lot of ways. The $400 price tag means it's only slightly more expensive than the OLED Switch, but also significantly less expensive than a "shit tier laptop". It also looks like we're headed into another console draught this Christmas, so any gaming device like this is going to be a hot commodity by default. The price / performance ratio looks really good as well, as others pointed out this is basically a portable PS4 or Xbox One but with only a 800p screen it should be able to do some pretty impressive stuff while still looking damn good.

I think this will do well, maybe even better than Valve predicts.

It's about time Nintendo gets their teeth kicked in
Sure in fantasy land, but we all live on planet earth where nintendo exists & this thing will be a niche purchase at most for diehard steam fans. But i welcome it's arrival it will be something in a long line of rivals for nintendo to trounce.

First gameboy destroyed gamegear/lynx & pc engine gt
Then the DS destroyed the PSP
Then the 3DS destroyed the vita
And finally we can watch as this thing flops against the switch

Shut up and take my money!

Fantastic price. I want to know if the nvme is upgradable or solded onto the board. If we can buy a 1tb nvme and put it inside, it's sold.

Curious about battery life but I wouldn't count on more than 1:30 to 2h. Still... i'm in

WOW the fact it runs everything as an open PC platform, gamepass, etc is just insane. If I was gaming on PC I'd be smashing that F5 the moment reservations go live to get it as a peripheral to my main rig.
Which I think is gonna happen later down the gen anyway. Good times! Hope to see future premium models

Curious about how well non-steam games are supported. I'm interested, but I've got a ton of games on GOG, EA, UPLAY, and now EPIC.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
This is insane for $400 ngl

Looks like another flop akin to Steam machine and Steam Controller, that will be forgotten and discontinued in a year.
If the Indiegogo and Kickstarter devices are anything to go by, I'll have to mash that RESERVE button tomorrow like my life depends on it. These things sell like hot cakes.

Already glad that you can't immediately reserve it with a burner account. Need to have purchased shit before June this year to apply early.
