Resident Evil Village Second biggest physical launch - UK

Well Gmepass is what 4 years old?, sounds about right to me.
This isnt the first time its been talked about Xbox users being a higher percentage digital compared to Playstation.
IMO the Outriders and Resi 8 situation proves it. But perople will see what they want to see.
Kind of like.....YOU? What people may have said or might have said in other threads does not overrule a report that is shared here in this thread.

Regardless, since there is no physical version of Game Pass, you can definitely make the argument that people on Xbox are digital but as far as I know, Game Pass does not add to the 'sales' figures for a specific game. At the same time, just because Game Pass exists does not mean you can overlook the large user base that exists across PS4 + PS5.

So if if understand correctly Xbox is doomed because physical sales of REVIII is 80%-20% for Playstation, by physicals sales for Returnal are not important because PS5 is digital....Talking about cherry picking, right?
Returnal is a new IP and digital sales for it SEEM to be good (which is a separate thing altogether btw and this isn't the topic for it). Resident Evil is not a new IP. And no one is necessarily saying Xbox is doomed - they are just talking about the discrepancy of unit sales for RE8 and what could the causes be. If you have your own 'analysis' of the situation, why don't you share that instead of trying to paint a scenario that isn't true. There is no cherry picking - you are talking about different games with completely different histories, lol.

Did we ever get any digital sales numbers for any of the 3 players?

Dude i keep asking for someone to give me a none biased reason why Outriders and Resi 8 have the same split, yet one game launched on Gamepass, and the other one didnt. No one will answerr though, and they wont answer because the answer is painfully obvious.

Someone already responded to that. They stated that Outriders didn't stay the top paid game after the first week. They also pointed out MLB was a top download on the PlayStation.

I saw you comment on Game Pass later on.....where I agree that Game Pass existing on Xbox will surely have an influence on how people play/purchase their games.

EDIT

It was jroc74 who responded to you on that.

EDIT

Out of curiosity, what is the split for Outriders and the related source for it?

What concerns me here, is where are the last gen sales. I mean....I know we have new consoles and people are starved to buy them...but has there just been some crazy loss of interest in games in the UK outside of the hardcore?

Like everyone who was interested in buying games buys a ps5 and buys the game for that.....Theres millions of PS4s and xboxes isnt there that should/would want to buy this? I'm a bit puzzled.
A ton of gamers don't care about RE. It only really appeals to a subset of core gamers.

I wish we had numbers instead of percentages. Impressive it outsold a picture taking game.

Gamers don't care about a series that has been around since 1998 or prior? lol

But we are talking launch numbers here, not what happens a week or two from now..
The only logical reason for the Outriders and Resi 8 launch split being the same is if Xbox retail game buyers are a tiny percentage compared to digital.
unless we are going to start pretending that Xbox users dont care about a huge game in a long lived and loved series, and would rather wait for months to see if the game eventually comes to Gamepass. Come on now.

So what are the launch numbers for Outriders? And what was the split for it (and could you share a source for it that shows that)?

As for Game Pass, well, isn't RE7 on Game Pass? So people that have invested in Game Pass might expect it to reach the service at some point in the future. To think Game Pass won't affect game sales for Xbox is also silly if you ask me. It can both influence a purchase and prevent a purchase.

The split was already known and there is a thread for it. 79% i think the split was in favour of Playstation, so basically the same.
And stop with the source crap, how else could you explain the Outriders and Resi 8 situation if it isnt what i'm saying?.
Also the other guy you were on about seems to of forgotten MLB launched day and date on Gamepass.

83% of Outriders’ physical UK launch sales were on PlayStation

UK Sales Charts: Hitman 3 Physical Sales Exceed Hitman 2, 49% of Sales on PS5

49 per cent of all sales were for the PlayStation 5 version. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 edition accounted for 25 per cent, with Xbox left to mop up the rest.

Well do a search then. It was something like 'UK Outriders launch, 80% sales on Playstation', or something like that.
Well, I was hoping you could share the one that you are trusting. I will look it up later then....since I am not that invested into this argument or point as you are.

CAPCOM ACQUISITION WHEN SONY
With this kind of data, do they even need to?

It's not like Capcom will agree to be acquired by Xbox, neither will they start developing exclusives after exclusives for Xbox. That's just not the platform for them. Worst case scenario is they will produce some AA Switch exclusives.

I don't think Sony will shell out almost $10 billion for them in these circumstances. They'd rather get some Western studios with broader appeal if they have to.

It would be foolish to assume it has the mainstream popularity of Pokemon or Animal Crossing. Note 'core gamers'.
It would also be foolish to think that it needs to be like Pokemon or Animal Crossing in order to be impactful. It's still a very well known IP with a long history.

Wow. Total domination

this trend has to be worrisome for Phil, no wonder he spent so much for Bethesda

this is even worse than the start of last gen. Ouch.

I wonder if this would make it easier if Sony decided to buy a huge Japanese publisher like Capcom or Square
Capcom and Sqaure will be more concerned with losing software sales from Switch than software sales from Xbox, but either way I don't think this has that much impact on whether an acquisition would happen.

Sony gives digital percentages overall but doesn't often release firm sales numbers for games. Nintendo gives a lot of firm sales numbers for games, but doesn't tell us what percentage is digital of each one.

Microsoft doesn't give us anything I don't think.

First brand to mass promote online, first to sell digital versions, first to promote digital versions of the consoles with sizeable sales (One S All Digital and Series S), also Zhuge said years ago that Digital marketshare sales on Xbox were bigger than Playstation. Also to consider the marketplace for VPNs and that apparently they were giving a huge microsoft rewards points for pre orders.

I've seen owners of Fat and One S models going exactly to Series S than Series X, which is exactly the aimed public at.
All good assumptions, but I don't think there is any data or evidence that suggests a massive disparity in digital sales b/w Xbox and PlayStation.

PlayStation digital sales are already hovering around 75 percent. You don't think Xbox will be at 90 or 95 percent, right? Because unless it's there, there won't be any difference -- let alone a big one. 70% of PlayStation sales will likely be bigger than 90% of Xbox sales anyway.

Ugh. 🤦‍♂️

Since there is no digital sales information available to us yet, to say Xbox is more digital vs. PlayStation is just silly. If PS has a bigger use base and if even half of them convert to digital, it can give PS the advantage in downloads, could it not? Anyway, do we have digital sale figures for any game being discussed so far or perhaps another game in the past?

Exactly. I don't know where the presumption has come from that Xbox has a significantly bigger digital sales ratio than PlayStation. There is also no data or evidence for that.

  • PlayStation's digital sales are around 75%. Let's assume, for the sake of this argument, that Xbox's digital sales are around 85%.
  • PlayStation's userbase is around 125 million. Xbox is around 60 million.
This means roughly 94 million PlayStation users buy digital games, and 45 million Xbox gamers buy digital games.

So even if we give Xbox a ridiculous 10% lead (an unbelievable 85% digital sales!), those digital sales would still be less than 50% of PlayStation digital sales.

This argument needs to die right now. It's absolutely laughable.

With all this talk about whether Gamepass has destroyed xbox physical sales, can I just add an observation that I haven't seen mentioned here.

The PlayStation 5's share of RE Village at 49% as already almost double that of PS4. Isn't that worrying? PS5 is only 8 million ish worldwide so if this trend is reflected outside the UK in the same proportions then PS4 is dying very, very quickly. More quickly than they can make PS5 possibly?

No.

That’s always been the case with cross gen games.

For Destiny it was 50/50 Xbox and Playstation split.

PS4 46%
PS3 4%
XBO 36%
360 14%

It doesnt need to die at all, as its almost certainly true, as Ouriders and Resi 8 show.
You said it yourself, 60mil Xbox vs 125mil PS, so why would physical sales be 80% better on PS if console wise its 55-60% ahead?.

In this specific instance that this thread is talking about, we'd have to take account of the fact that the gap between PlayStation and Xbox is much smaller in the UK than it is worldwide.

But I agree with your overall premise.

The people with a PS4 for the annual sports game and COD aren't those likely to buy RE. The "hardcore" userbase were the first to jump on the PS5 which is where they buy their games now. I think it makes sense.

I didn't say that. Please read my comment again.

The argument is that more Xbox users buy digital games than PlayStation gamers. First, this assumption is incorrect and not based on any data whatsoever. We know that PlayStation digital sales are around 75%. We don't have the Xbox data, as usual.
  • If we assume that both PlayStation and Xbox are at 75%, PlayStation will still have more digital sales (providing the earlier argument incorrect).
  • If we assume that PlayStation is at 75% but Xbox digital ratio is 85%, PlayStation will still have more digital sales (data in my earlier comment).
  • If we assume that PlayStation is at 75% but Xbox is at 100% (i.e., every single Xbox gamer only buys digital copies), PlayStation will still have more digital sales than Xbox.
This means that the ratio of Resident Evil sales will not change in favor of Xbox even if we include digital sales.

I think one part of the argument is that if we include digital sales worldwide, Xbox will have a significantly larger share than the aforementioned 20%. That assumption is just incorrect, imo, because:
  1. If we include digital sales in UK or worldwide: I've already presented my argument with accurate calculations.
  2. If we include regions other than UK: UK is a comparatively stronger market for Xbox than most other countries. In other countries, for example, Japan, Germany, Spain, etc., Xbox will have an even smaller share.

Not buying games that are NOT on Gamepass, especially mega popular games like Resi Evil?, sure. People seem to think every Xbox owner has Gamepass, they dont. 23mil Gamepass subs, which includes PC Gamepass, vs 55-60mil total Xbox's..
And again people are not reading the split data.

Neir - 89% spli to Playstation - Not on Gamepass
Hitman 3, 76% split to Playstation - Not on Gamepass
Outriders, 83% split to Playstation, - on Gamepass from launch.
Resi Evil 8, 80% split to Playstation - Not on Gmaepass.
MLB The Show, we dont have sales data yet, but if we do i bet the split percentage is still in the same range, even though it launched on Gamepass.

See something weird here?. The logical reason for splits being similar in different games, whether the game launches on Gamepass or not, is simply down to there being a small number of Xbox users that dont have Gamepass, and still buy physical.

Unless someone can give a reason why a new entry in a super popular series like Resi Evil, can get a very similar split to another game that launched day and date on Gamepass. Until that happens, the logical answer is what i said, its not rocket science.

Well i don't know even one Xbox owner who still buys physical so this is really not surprising at all. I'm sure digital sales are equally strong on both platforms and i'm also sure that half of Gamepass install base is waiting for it to arrive to GP.

No one is saying there will be more digital sales on Xbox vs Playstation, i'm saying that digital percentage of sales is higher on Xbox. Playstation has more than double the consoles, obviously games will sell better on their.
Someone in the Returnal thread i think, said that Playstation is at 79% digital sales now, and thats without A huge digital service like Gamepass. Its fair to say that the 15mil or so Gamepas users on Xbox probably mostly buy digital now, as they are used to it because of Gamepass. Its not proof, but its a pretty logical assumption.
I'd bet anyone right now that if Microsoft released numbers, Digital Xbox users will probably be at 90%. We dont know because we dont get numbers, but i'd bet it.

Yeah just going to post something similar. This thread, and the returnal thread, has some of the same users posting completely opposite viewpoints lol.
Wasnt there already evidence that Xbox users game sales are even higher digital than Playstation?, i'm sure that was discussed on here before. Plus Resi Evil 8, and most new games for that matter, are not even on Gamepass.
For the second time no there is no evidence. If there is then post it.
For example from GameIndustry.Biz

"In terms of consoles, PS4 was the biggest platform for downloads across the tracked publishers, accounting for 52% of sales -- PC was in second place with 27%."

Which means that xbox accounts for less than 21%. Even if we assume that PS5 and Switch accounted for 0% of digital games, 21% is half of 52%.

Sony's digital to physical split was 2:1 last year. 220m digital software was sold last fiscal year for Sony, which is almost what Nintendo sold with digital and physical combined.

Sony is the biggest market for selling digital games on consoles. Xbox is not even close.

And Playstation sales are more than double Xbox, more like 115%. And the article is from last year, and Gamepass has exploded over the last year or so.
This kind of proves what i'm saying if you think about it.

And thats not the point. 55-60mil Xbox users vs 125+mil Playstation users, so that is like 60% more. Then take off 15mil or so Gamepass users on Xbox. Add in the 10% digital percentage, and there is the reason for 80% more physical on Playstation over Xbox.

And you'll lose that bet, my friend.

I was about to post that GI data, but T Three beat me to it. As you can see, PlayStation is the leading platform in terms of digital sales. Yes, this is just for the European market, but the difference b/w PlayStation and other platforms is staggering and very representative of the overall picture. PS has more digital downloads than PC even -- even though almost all games are digital on PC.

As Three said, even if we attribute everything else to Xbox (0 downloads on Switch and 0 downloads on PS5), it is still half of PlayStation. All this data suggests that Xbox will either be equal or less than PlayStation in terms of total digital sales ratio. Not higher than PlayStation.

And as I said earlier, even if Xbox was 100% digital, the Resident Evil sales figures per platform won't change by much.
For the second time no there is no evidence. If there is then post it.

Taking into account the whole of last year. We are already in May, and Gamepass has gone up 6-7mil over the last 6 months, and more than doubled since this time last year.
And i'm not the one making excuses, i have been totally logical in my reasoning in this thread, hense very few challenging what i'm saying.
