Jim Ryan: "We will make sure the PlayStation 5 generation has more exclusive software than ever before

"we belive in generations" and after that declaration Horizon Forbidden West turns out to be crossgen
He said, "we believe in generations" because the PS5 generation is bringing new technologies, i.e., DualSense, I/O & SSD, PSVR 2 etc. When did he say that we won't have any cross-gen games and all our games will be next-gen only?

When he said "we believe in generations", he also mentioned PS supporting PS4 gamers in the same interview

"If you say in broad-brush figures that we have a community of 100 million PS4 owners right now, and in the first couple of years… I don't know, somewhere between 15 and 25 million might migrate to PS5, that still leaves a huge number of people with PS4s,” he continued. “We have always felt that we had a responsibility to serve that community.”

I can only go off what I see with my own eyes. If he starts making some decisions that lead to more games, I'm happy to be wrong.
what? ps5 came out in november. theres already a nice selection of games released in this time frame and more on the horizon that we 'know' about. Im not even talking about backlog from ps4 games either, thats just overkill. what are you talking about? please elaborate.

Sony need to build or aquire a Japanese studio.

I'd say they don't need to. Sony already has 2 Japanese development studios, plus the mobile gaming one. And basically every known Japanese 3rd party company (big or small, publisher or dev) released or will release at least one exclusive PS4 game. And basically all the other 3rd party Japanese console games were multi, so they also got them on PS4.

Its amazing that this and Miles gets bought up...but any PS5 exclusive that has already launched just gets dismissed.

There is another one next week....and in June.

How many major devs, major publishers have a next gen only game right now?

Exactly.

Not every game will be cross gen like Ratchet and Clank.
I'm starting to believe ppl really are having selective amnesia, lol.

Like....when did "we believe in generations" became a hard declaration meaning "there will be no cross gen games"

?

...Sony has never done that before, ever....

What they have always done tho, is have exclusives for their next gen console within the first year.

For example, was anyone seriously thinking MLB The Show would be PS5 only?

As far as cross gen vs exclusives...only MS came out with a definite answer to that.

Definite answer: thats not what he meant.
No definite answer: he lied.

lol.

the problem is that those statements were given in contrast (to make them look like a better position) to the news that was circulating at the time on all media, that on Xbox for the first period (as happened all gen) there would be no exclusive nextgens . Obviously Jimbo's words were just PR as both companies behaved in the exact same way and both were based mainly on cross gen games.
He got misquoted as if he was saying that there wouldn't be crossgen games on PS5, when obviously they are. He was saying that wants to see he games on PS5 taking advantage of its unique next gen features, but that they will continue supporting PS4 during several years because there is, and for a while there will be, a huge active fanbase there.

The reality is they are releasing many games -crossgen or not- that take advantage of these unique PS5 features, and that they continue supporting PS4, so he didn't lie. His strategy is different than the MS one in the way that they are supporting the next gen not only with crossgen, indies and multis, but also with big releases both exclusive and crossgen. Don't forget Sony has Astro, Demon's Souls, Destruction All Stars, Returnal or Ratchet.

But yes yes, the press and the fanboys have done their part by magnifying all of this. It is clear that you can not forget makes 100 million users overnight and the only difference between Sony and ms and "I know y had more titles ready. Ms only had the medium but if she had more I'm sure she would have let out without thinking twice.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
That’s a lot different mindset than Microsoft’s mindset but a premature mistake gamers don’t like what you say but what you do. That is what made PS1-4 great.

Then closes a studio that helped make these games. From Wiki:

2015–2020

2015 Bloodborne

2016 The Tomorrow Children
The Last Guardian

2017 PaRappa the Rapper
LocoRoco
Everybody's Golf
Patapon
Knack II
No Heroes Allowed! VR
LocoRoco 2

2018 Shadow of the Colossus
Déraciné

2019 Everybody's Golf VR

2020 Patapon 2
Demon's Souls
First, they didn't close it.

Second, since 2015 from all these games only The Last Guardian and Knack 2 (plus Gravity Rush and Astro's Playrooom) were developed by them.

All the other games were 2nd party games developed by external studios, and Sony will continue 2nd party games. But now instead of handling 2nd party publishing locally from Sony Japan Studio, Sony Santa Monica etc, they merged all their publishing into the global PlayStation Studios publishing team.

He explained it very well in that same interview. He said they had over 100M active users in PS4 and even if PS5 sells at gaming history records during its few years only less than 20M will have shifted to PS5 in the first couple of years, and all the other ones will continue with PS4.

So he said that for this reason they were going to continue supporting PS4 during at least 2 or 3 years after the PS5 release.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Gonna be awhile before anything but niche titles are exclusive. Don't think the big games like God of War and Horizon can afford to do what demon souls and returnal are doing.

Give me some next gen only spider man and god of war and I'll be happy.

It's because we don't know anything about the studio. Probably they are a support studio helping the other ones. Or who knows, maybe they are working on their own game. Let's wait and see if they announce something about them.

I have the distinct feeling that a lot of people around these parts are going to be shoveling big fat crows in their face when e3 time rolls around and Jim drops the megatons. Quiet Sony is like a hunting lioness preparing to pounce for the kill.
the problem for Jim is that this time for the first time in the history of the two consoles are rivaling Microsoft in full force. I don't think Sony can rival a Microsoft in terms of megaton and hunting lions and we have clearly seen it with the day one releases on gamepass or with the various acquisitions and above all with Bethesda, let's be honest the only advantage Sony has at the moment is brand recognition but that doesn't create megatons. I personally think Microsoft is not done with the acquisitions

Who thought it meant no cross gen games, when Sony has never done that? They always support their last gen home console for a few years.

I agree with you the history of crossgen has been magnified by the media and on the forums. But it always works like this, for everyone. Especially when a message is unclear to your userbase.

Xbox released too ...and?
i mean it is clear that Sony was more ready to launch the new console. But the generation has just begun and they are just entering the game production cycle. Honestly the covid is helping Ms, it's first year of waiting and in the meantime studios are moving forward ending games. Sony cannot afford to launch big hits only on next gen if it does not have a substantially larger user base than than they have now and unfortunately for Sony there is a huge slowdown in the production of consoles which is blocking the growth of this userbase. Microsoft can give a damn about all this because it would anyway release on the day one also on pc. So yes the substantial advantage Sony had is fading fast and once ms studios start releasing games well I don't know how it will go.

Key word, quietly. They are market leader they act whilst MS has to react.

Also is this old sony or new sony? I'm confused on which way gaf wants to take this, are they confident or arrogant? Make up your mind neck beards

Japan Studio's has been dead since basically the PS3 era. You've had two gens to mourn, move on. I wanted Ape Escape and Siren sequels as much as the next guy but realised it wasn't going to happen years ago.

Sony will slowly cut out the PS4 and at some point there will only be PS5 games from their studios. It's something that they do every generation. Demon Souls Remake is exclusive to the PS5 and there has been and will be more exclusive PS5 games.

And cross-gen PS4 games. Remember "we believe in generations'?
just because they still support PS4 which btw sits at 120 mil strong compared to Phil’s Xbox at 40 mil 🤣, ofcourse they want to support that massive userbase. Only a moron wouldnt.

BTW Is Demon Souls REMAKE on PS4? Returnal? Rift apart? Allstar? So yeah they do INFACT believe in generations.

Xbox on the other hand has neither a single next gen game or a new game released 😅 Imagine launching a console without any games 🤦‍♀️

This is new old Sony. Confident in their approach and arrogant in their response to Microsoft. I've made up my mind, I'll shave when I wake up.

Average quality is going to go down, but their studios that have been producing hits are going to continue to do so I'm sure. However time to make those blockbusters is only increasing.. taking up more and more talent too.. more people spending more time.

So expect some misses, and the misses or medium quality games will be more plentiful than the GOWs, and GOTs of the world... we've already seen that w/ them getting behind that one game I can't even remember that they dumped on PS Plus.

And now that announced game from a total unknown from today.

Not a big deal.. but that's what you get when you just throw money around for exclusives (*cough*.. looking at you Microsoft.. *cough*)

Honestly think Sony's biggest problem, if there is one.. is that they've got TLOU 2 just having come out.. a sort of new Spiderman.. Horizon 2... new GOW.. new GT.. all RELATIVELY soon at the beginning of the gen. Bend studio takes forever...there will probably be a couple years w/o big hits unless they pay for them, which is probable at this point, but not really a big win for weirdos who only buy one console ;)

Doesn't really help that Sony was the first with it, only to ditch it later. They should have sticked with it.

The thing I said, or meant, is Microsoft does so much right by supporting this where Sony the last couple of years outright are against things like these.
Because you don't understand why MS is supporting this now. MS actively rejected crossplay during the 360 era. Why? Because they had the install base back then. Things like this is all about something called vendor lock-in. They are supporting this now because they are on the other foot. They want switching to xbox to be less difficult whereas before they wanted it to be more difficult to switch to PS especially with the year headstart. The fact that we have crossplay with the PS4 is something that is pro-consumer. They could have been real bastards about it.

While not untrue; the entire company has had a culture shift when it comes to exclusivity. They are now by some measures the largest contributors to open source.. they have much better support for non-MS operating systems.. because they are now focused on pure scale as a company, having their products everywhere as much as possible, w/o "proprietary from top down" approach they had before.

Which is also driven by the fact they essentially lost the Windows monopoly.. as the world now runs on web servers, and those are mostly Linux based.

So it's all the same drivers.. (market share isn't enough, need to expand beyond market share)... but Xbox is unlikely to go back to their attitude of "keep things proprietary" because the entire company isn't about that anymore.

Who gives a shit that their driver is.. money.. like every other company? Their mantra is now far more consumer friendly.. developer friendly... and, shareholder friendly.

Really though.. if Xbox doesn't scale w/ GamePass in a huge way MS might just not be interested in keeping them around. That's the biggest risk with XBox. Microsoft is now a company that is really generous with their service offerings due to being a huge cloud provider w/ insane profit margins.. but they aren't going to keep some costly part of their business around necessarily if it doesn't scale to meet their expectations. That generosity is designed to scale to the point where you have so money customers your profit is massive.

Because you don't understand why MS is supporting this now.
Don't you tell me what I understand or not. I am well aware why Sony hesitated, only a moron couldn't figure that out.

Doesn't change the fact that its anti consumer no matter how you spin it or see it from sonys point of view.

But now we have some weird thing where we are never quite sure how cross play or progression works because it's different from title to titlr what Sony allows. Smite doesn't have cross progrrssion, but cod has, just an example. Meanwhile both has on xbox.
