Man I hope Returnal hits it out the park.....Journey was GOTY back in the day and was mostly an indie production. Returnal looks really solid, may not be a 90+ like Journey, but.....Resogun, Alienation, Super Stardust, Dead Nation, Storm Divers were all excellent games from HouseMarque.....

I'm sure it ticks the boxes for most people and that's great. Returnal certainly looks impressive graphically, but as far as the story goes from what I've seen so far it doesn't really captivate me.
The older I get the more fickle I get with game's unfortunately and I end up starting a game and not finishing it because it just gets mundane, a perfect example would be Spider-man Miles Morales. The last time I got pulled in to a game and couldn't put it down would probably be RDR2, GOT or TLOU2.

Thanks to this thread I keep going back and forth as to whether I should cancel my (fully paid for) preorder. I hate to admit it, but this is going to be half off a couple months after release. I still want it, I’ll still buy it, but I’m having a hard time justifying at full price.

Well that makes it a little easier if you buy it and you end up not enjoying it, as you can sell it on and lose £5 -10 on Ebay. This is exactly what I did with The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt and Fallout 4 and only lost £5 for both games combined. I can live with that lol, not brave enough to go digital!

Yeah I understand what you're saying. I really wouldn't enjoy playing through a game multiple times for different outcomes that would just burn me out and kill my enjoyment. Maybe at some point many years ago but not anymore. I appreciate other people enjoy doing that though.

There’s such a weird defensiveness here regarding any criticism of the awful character design. No one who points out the intentional ugliness and androgyny of her design has said that she must be hyper-sexualized or that you can’t have a female protagonist. But that’s all the “consume the corporate product, never critique!” crowd can hear, because they’re trained to think these kinds of obviously political design decisions are somehow brave or progressive.
For comparison: my favorite protagonist from any sci-fi film of the past decades is the main character in Arrival. She’s a realistic and complex woman, not sexualized (attractive actress, sure, but given a plain, unadorned look throughout). They didn’t feel the need to make her androgynous in any way, or to fit into any fashionable gender politics... in fact, rather than just swapping a woman into a role modeled on a male—which would be meaningless—her position as a woman actually means something to her arc and her unique vantage point. Her future loss of a child is the hinge upon which the whole film turns, and her ability to glimpse that future is one part of how she comes to understand the aliens when no one else could.
In contrast, a character like the one in this game is clearly written “backwards.” They want so badly to be progressive and defy norms that they basically went down the list of things she *can’t* be (even remotely feminine, straight, etc) and then just inverted all of them. When I say that she’s ugly, I don’t just mean on the surface... she’s the product of an ugly, spiteful view of the world; you can spot it a mile away, and usually it’s best to skip any product created by people with that kind of hatred for normal humanity.

Some argue that it's not "realistic", like beauty has to be within a standard or it's unreal, but this narrative only affects female characters somehow. Ripped male is fine, but anything resembling feminine traits is "unrealistic". See the double standards here?

If you care that much about how hot a games protagonist is so much than watching porn might be a more fun activity for you. I like attractive mc’s, but not every game needs them, its kinda cool to play as a middle aged woman, thats not a protagonist you usually see in a game. Theres just as much room for characters like her and abby as there is for characters like tifa, 2b, liara, or miranda from mass effect. And as for abby, i like her design, i wish i was as buff as she is. Shes a great counter point to elly whose at the opposite end being lanky and skinny.

As a newly developed character I don’t care. I just want to shoot things, and this dev excels at this.
Now if developers changed female characters in say a Remaster or Remake to make them less attractive to fit an agenda then yeah that’s just straight up wrong.
The protagonist here, to me, looks like an ordinary woman, a scientist who has to shoot shit to survive, and that’s all I care about with this title.
There is indeed a trend I totally agree with you on that. FF7 remake would have sold zero copies had the chars in that game been redesigned as a bunch of ugly ass old girls.

I want this game to succeed and even though I loved Super Stardust, Resogun and Nex Machina to death, the rest of Housemarque games were not that amazing to me.
I'm currently on the fence on this one as I'm on the "vote with your wallet" camp.The protagonist, unless there is a clear reason for their choice story wise, is not helping on selling me the game as I'm not looking forward to finance the REEEEEE/woke crowd.
And I'm fine with the price tag, the production value is certainly there and I love roguelikes.
