Xbox sure screwed up with its E3 2013.

That and pretty much the whole generation. A bad E3 won't really have someone not buy a system for life or something, maybe that year, but every year that followed they remined people to avoid em as they continued to just pump out the same AAA titles over and over.

Just the start of this gen is night and day for MS compared to last gen. I don't ever think they will have a generation as fucking shitty as the XONE generation was for them. The fact that they bought many teams, the fact that Avowed....A NEW AAA IP from MS is happening is a massive change for the better. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking last gen thinking they could beat Sony or Nintendo with the same fucking IP that they literally just sold less units then both previously.

It would be like EA thinking they can beat Call Of Duty by just making THE SAME IP they just used the previous gen. It makes zero sense. I didn't fucking like Halo or Gears last gen, not sure why they though that was going to change the next generation or something.

Now Avowed.... sounds like a day 1 insta buy no questions asked. MS continue to do more of that, they have my money any day lol

Hobbygaming Hobbygaming Agreed. Sony had plans for them that generation lol. It was like Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman, God Of War, Days Gone, Death Stranding, The Last Of Us 2, Ghost Of Tsushima etc. They legit planned to murder them every year. Its clear they had things planned to have a solid set up and executed it brilliantly.

I am happy to see MS finally buying more teams and looking to have a more heathy set up and making new IP, this is what the industry needs. Sony basically fucking carried that generation with new AAA IP. MS has the money to do the same and even better, they simply need to trust their developers when its time to move on. Though I don't like the whole "Fable or Perfect Dark" thing, they have been gone for a while and are headed by new teams, so I think MS isn't doing it simply to be safe, but because they trust they have new ideas that can bring in new consumers. So I think this gen will be different and more competitive like it should be vs Sony monstering thru GOTY awards.

The fact that 2 of 2020's top games that got GOTY are both Sony's is impressive as shit for a final PS4 push before PS5. They are reminding folks just why people chose a PS4 over a XONE.

For you and some hardcore people, that makes a difference.

However I don't think the momentum has changed at all. I think PlayStation will continue to gain market share unless they screw up in some major major way.

Now, that's just my opinion and I could be off but that's what I feel right now from what I hear and see around me.

I see the same thing pretty much. Everyone is looking for a PS5, PS5 being all over YouTube videos to Saturday Night Live skits

PS continues to have the mindshare

Yeah, precisely.

Now, don't get me wrong I admire what Xbox is trying to do in some respects... I'd have preferred if they did it organically or just with small studios instead of publishers.

I'm not a big Bethesda fan but I have a few people I'm friendly with that are and they just got a PS5 anyway. I think gamers are so used to most of these games going to all platforms, the expectation is that the next game will go anyway, even if they say it wont and if it doesn't...... it's like 'F*** you, I'm gonna wait till you bring it to me' much like many PC gamers talk about PlayStation exclusives.

Yeah, the thing about PS consoles is that there's so many good games that a lot people don't really feel the need for another console and will be willing to miss out on a series or two and still be content

Xbox is in a tricky situation because they need to take their time and make sure their studios game's make great impressions, but waiting too long will mean more and more people will get a PS5 for its exclusives

Step 1. Wait for your competition to make one of the worst blunders in consumer electronics history.
Step 2. Take full advantage of it.

Sony picked up that ball and ran with it. The PS4 E3 Press Conference is one for the ages. Tretton just murdering Microsoft for five straight minutes, slide after slide, is the stuff of legend. The PS3 was their darkest hour, but in that moment, you knew Sony was fucking back.

Kinda disappointed Series consoles reveal was not as entertaining as xbox one in 2013.

Sometimes trainwrecks are great to watch. Reason why I much prefer Wii U over switch.

By default. If I went full PC, thus missing out on the 5 or so exclusives on PS4 I deem as must-play (and that's being generous), I don't think my time last gen would've been all that different. Oh I wouldn't have had to pay Sony to play online.

If I’m being honest (I had both the PS3 and 360 and, apart from Sony exclusives, the 360 was by far the better console) I thing Microsoft lost at the time the put too much focus on that fucking Kinect. Yes, Sony did have their own motion control and camera but it wasn’t as bad as what Microsoft was as doing with Kinect. Microsoft basically lost the plot and, if I’m being honest, still haven’t recovered. In fact, every single decision they’ve made since then has been in reaction to Sony wiping the floor with them.
The 2013 tv tv tv bullshit certainly didn’t help, but they were lost well before that. I purchased the One on launch as I thought Microsoft could turn it around, and I loved titanfall but I soon clicked back to Sony where I have remained since. Sony showed you can have a product that complements the main console (PSVR) without compromising it. I don’t care about game pass. That’s no system seller to me. Fancy pushing game rentals as a major selling point for your console and not exclusive game! God I used to love Microsoft consoles...

The 360 was a great console but it was also lifted up by many many 3rd party exclusives and timed exclusives...

I played GRAW at a friends house and was just blown away, so I had to get one after that but then there was a huge wave of games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Borderlands, Splinter Cell, COD hitting it's peak and Xbox being at the forefront of online gaming all put the 360 in the right place, at the right time.

Sony was too late to the party, focused on the wrong things at that point.

The fqct the better designed console, at the better value for money price point, with the better games sold better should surprise no one.

The real interesting question should be whether the Switch can beat it out once all is said and done, because honestly those two have pretty much all the same strengths, and 8th gen system sales aren't over yet by a long shot.

Odd video where they spend half the time talking about things like no E3 2019 and no cross play for awhile, which obviously ended up playing zero effect on the results. The saltiness about State of Plays comes across in particular. I guess they don't like being cut out as middle men journalists

But then they give no real discussion of things like the price advantage, the power advantage at a lower price. PS4s advantage of F2P not being behind a pay wall really showing up in games like Fortnite.

Sony's indie friendliness opening up opportunities with unexpected hits like Rocket League, Undertale, The Witness, Spelunky 2, Hotline Miami 2 etc becoming defacto console time exclusives. Something less relevant as the gen goes on, but was evident when both consoles were still on their early libraries.

Agree they were a bit light on some details and even fucked up with the whole crossplay thing people do forget that Street Fighter V was crossplay with PC

This is also where Xbox lost me. I hated the last few years of the Xbox 360's life cycle of Kinect shovelware but even then I was loyal and ended up getting the Xbox One and because of the launch lineup

After listening to multiple fake E3 rumors and Xbox's hyping of all of these new exciting exclusive games coming, I finally got fed up in 2017 and got a PS4

IMHO no Xbox console has lived up to the only PS consoles I've had: PS1 and PS4

Don was actually the first person in history to make xbox profitable.

Don just happens to be 'there' when Xbox turned profitable
Same thing, Phil was 'there' as shits happened and needed lots of efforts to steer things around
Likewise, Jimbo is 'there' as PS mindshare is at the strongest it has ever been, as of today.

It is just something that takes awhile to see the results.

Another thing is early on Sonys UI and integration was just leagues ahead. The social sharing, Twitch integration etc. just made it seem like the more forward thinking games console.

Xbox spent the first few years undoing their awful UI and undoing bizarre decisions like Netflix and YouTube behind the XBL Gold paywall

By the time Xbox got to a point that this was remedied (plus price, power etc) the momentum was too much. They needed some game changing software but had just spent years dismantling studios like Lionhead or letting go of studios like Bungie and cancelling projects like Scalebound

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Xbox sure screwed up with its E3 2013.
Yeah it's insane how out of touch you could be with the players, and I doubt that they will ever recover from it.

Personally I liked the idea of buying a physical game and getting both a physical and a digital copy l, but sadly I'm in the minority.
That launch ps4 is still one of the sexiest console designs of all time in my opinion.

The PS4 was the obvious choice by far but quality wise the system wasn't even that good. The DS4 coating was destroyed a month after I bought the system at at launch. The system was noisy. And discs would spit out due to the little component underneath the console which I ended up removing. But the PS4 was cheaper, more powerful. And delivered great games though Shadow Fall and Knack at launch sucked.

Sony's marketing was spot on, they catered to the old school fans with their videos. With PS3 I felt they cut all ties, with its focus on Cell and the different font. It was all talk. PS3 felt somewhat oddball to me, as if something wasn't right. PS2 was also all talk, but it worked because they delivered with arguably the best library in history. PS3 just didn't deliver on that front, not during its maiden years at least. PS4 was back to games again, and no bullshit.

MS just screwed up nearly everything. The doubled down on the already dying motion controls, my country was listed at tier 2 which meant a full year later than Sony with a weaker system to boot. There was almost zero reason to pick up an Xbox.
