So PS5's HDMI 2.1 isn't even real 2.1 which is 48gbps?

Wow.
HDMI 2.1 is 40 gbps or optional 48gbps. But both is specified for HDMI 2.1

But that explains why the HDMI cable delivered with the PS5 is missing the description for HDMI2.1. It just isn't an HDMI 2.1 cable, but capable to transfer what the PS5 transfers.
But why should they do that? This shouldn't be a big cost difference.

I know 4k 120Hz is not really something we will see often, I really don't know why they than cap the quality while the rest of the system uses the latest tech (Bluetooth, wifi, ...).

It is an hdmi 2.1 cable. HDMI 2.0b was only 18Gbps so anything above that bandwidth up to 48Gbps is HDMI 2.1

How many people purchased TV's for a PS5? Is it normal to purchase a new TV just for a video game console?
I did. Bought the 900h for the PS5 and XsX. Kinda regretting the purchase though, the TV is buggy and I might get a refund and go for something more expensive if Sony doesn't fix it soon.

Bullshit, as always.

So PS5 is currently capped to 32gbps which is part of HDMI 2.1 spec (the minimum for 4k 120hz).

But it does output 12-bit RGB 444 at 4K 60hz over HDMI 2.1 which is nice.

It outputs 12-bit YCC 422 at 4K 120hz which is alright but 10-bit RGB 444 would be better.

I guess this explains why there is no 8K 60hz support as that needs 40gbps minimum.

What will be telling in the long is which of the minimum 8K signals Sony adds support for
8K 24Hz (10/12-bit 422 32gbps)
or
8k 60Hz (10-bit 420 40gbps)

That would reveal if the current 32gbps cap is a software limitation or a hardware limitation.

Return and get the Q80T or Q90T. The only downside is no Dolby Vision.

How's that VRR working?
It will be eventually supported or they will face a massive lawsuit for decieving costumers. I’m gonna bet on the first one.

PS5 will support full HDMI 2.1 no matter what fanboys want if they are delaying the feature it is probably to ensure it is stable, as really only a fraction of users own HDMI 2.1 TVs.

Every console has its pros and cons. If it could be updated then brilliant if not then just stick with it. Dont forget series x doesnt have wifi6 nor the fastest usb port

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
My gut feeling is that they will enable the full 40GBps (48 is not necessary) in a future firmware update. It COULD explain why VRR isn't enabled yet.

While the PS5 is a damn impressive machine, missing features like disabled M2 slot, lack of VRR and lack of full bandwidth put it solidly in beta.

I've so far had a blast.

Patchstation 5 ;p

Wonder how long will it take for PS5 and XSX to fully mature their firmware/OS features, day by day it's becoming more and more striking how premature this gen's launch is, not just in terms of lackluster launch lineups, but the consoles themselves. I understand that Black Friday and Christmas Eve are just around the corner, but early 2021 should've been the moment of next-gen launch.

I don't particularly care one way or the other, but when the final facts are known, I want to see videos of some of you actually eating crow, literally, not figuratively. Put your money where your mouth is.

I doubt we will see 4k 120fps next gen games. I kind of regret buying a new tv for it, at least it's being used with my Rtx 3080.

If you were in charge of projects and work, would you prioritise 4K120 FPS for some 2D indie games or stuff like below - Its clear for me what should be the immediate focus here

Wow.
Xbox Series X is only 40Gbps. It would also not be considered 2.1 going by your incorrect standard. Wow.

I have both consoles. This has gotten ridiculous on what people are grasping for to call out the other side. I will be disappointed if Sony does not include a fix for this with the VRR patch but it is not the end of the world. It seems Sony concentrated on getting the hardware out the door with some semblance of first party launch titles and wants us to wait for firmware updates. Microsoft concentrated on getting the box out the door and wants us to wait for first party software and "tools" to be optimized. Both are lacking in some areas and both did better in others.

Like I said last week when it came up, most of the (useful) 2.1 features will be added in time as they did for PS3 and PS4. It sucks that they couldn't get the firmware side in a better state for launch but then the game/dev side is very good. For a game console it makes sense to prioritise games and dev tools over currently niche HDMI features that very few can take full advantage of. It also allows them more time for bugs to be ironed out as we have seen with the 2.1 bug in multi thousand £$ AV amps.

Link to an official statement from Sony Please?
It says 8K and 120fps on the PS5 packaging. They would get sued if the console couldn't output 8K. So at some point that will be updated. The HDMI chip is Panasonic as mentioned by Vincent in the video and is capable of 48Gbps. VRR, 120fps and full HDMI 2.1 are a patch down the line.

there is so much confusion about HDMI 2.1. I feel like the industry tried to push a feature that everyone had different plans about.

LG were the only ones consistently implementing it in their last generations TVs and even they downgraded from 48 to 40Gbps.

I would like to have a statement from Sony for this, maybe they have a whole different vision about the whole thing, I trust them to sort this out though.

Is this really news? It would be different if Sony explicitly promoted features such as VRR and 12 bit support, but from I can recall, they have not. Seems like an update to the PS5 OT would be sufficient and this thread is more or less just war bait.
