Yeah but they also told me that using the SSD and all it’s I/O is effortless and automatically done by the system itself and doesn’t need much developer intervention. In fact it‘s on the Road to PS5. Why can’t devs show that 100% difference now? Surely something is stopping them. I mean fine it doesn’t have to be a 100% difference but the performance delta on various native next gen games show very little difference.

I mean it goes to show that it’s not really effortless and you still have to put some work in to make it utilize full efficiency.
I don’t get it.

The biggest doubts we talked in next-gen thread was about games being make with focus in PS5’s SSD... so cross-gen games won’t show the speeds Sony talked.

You can back early this year or even late last year and all talk was about that... so the fact MS was supporting Xbox One could the use of SSD in games.

So you need to give examples because most people I talked here in GAF never expected games not made to take advantage of SSDs to run at 2s or lower loading.

The biggest fear of all of us were old engines used in cross-gen games holding the use of the SSD and that is why a lot of us (including Xbox fans) keep saying you only see advantage in SSD in first party exclusives.

Games to take use of SSDs needs to be designed with SSD in mind...

The biggest example of that is that PC has SSDs for a decade already and games never showed big improvements in loadtimes like games that are designed to SSD are showing now.

It's quite simple, compare any same architecture GPU, the slower clocked, higher compute GPU will also have more ROP's so it's raster performance is way above the mid range card etc, with Series X and PS5 Microsoft went wide and slow with 64 rops and Sony went narrow fast and 64 rops, raster performance is 40% better on PS5.

Im looking at 3080 vs 3070 here. Same arch.

A lower clocked 3080 has identical amount of ROPs as 3070 [96], but higher memory bandwidth, just like XBSX vs PS5, but obviously 3080 is much faster than 3070 [~30%]. In your explanation narrower 3070 should outperfrom wider lower clocked 3080.

By first party using the SSD, I think of it as stuff like loading tons of data in-game and high quality textures similar to the UE5 demo being used a lot. The key is something that affects gameplay. I don’t expect third party to utilize this as not every console or PC can perform at that level due to the difference in SSDs.

The loading the level stuff is pretty straightforward and I had expected massive gains on that even on third party games. Either the Xbox is punching above its weight in loading or the PS5 is underperforming.

Neither is barely reaching half of the max bandwidth of the SSD... game logic is a bottleneck in all 3rd-party engines.

These 20s you wait in AC the SSD is waiting too... it is the CPU and/or GPU that is taking all this time to do it job.

The performance gains we're seeing for PS5 is about what many expected in XSX's favor, or more. Went exactly the opposite as expected lol and COD and other games are also showing similar performance gains so this isn't just one engine.

Multiplatforms being a hair better on XSX was one its "big" bonuses, and it can't even manage that.

Wonder if uncle Phil called the beard guy yet.

”Dude, what the hell happened?! We gave you unlimited money and we even paid for your beard!”

I'm guessing they just said they wanted 12TFs and that's what happened. I still believe the XSX is more powerful but if it doesn't win multiplatform comparisons in the future then the 12TFs is just a marketing figure and nothing more.

Seems like Xbox's disingenuous marketing has caught a few people out. I feel bad for them

People waiting for Xbox Series X tools will be hurt when games actually start using next generation features because PS5 is better equip for the memory streaming for higher level of detail assets.

These cross gen games are actually Xbox Series S/X safe place unless they come up with some good ideals for ML.

The tools/GDK being behind PS5's was debunked on camera by the Ubisoft technical director that has worked on both SDKs. That's word from the horse's mouth and night and day more credible than the damage control 'according to developer sources Xbox GDK is coming in hot'. Sony's SDK is coming in hot.

Gotta say I'm very surprised. I'm getting PS5 tommorow (UK) as I already have a decent pc, but I was certain that xbox series x would run multplats significantly better. I even said on a few posts that specs don't lie. Sony did great stuff here and after dissing Cerny in various threads, I apologise. Hats off sir, guess he did know his shit all along.

Can't wait to get my hands on the PS5 Beast tommorow, has been agonising watching all these vids knowing it's out in some territories.

Screen tearing isn't an issue when one console has VRR but the FPS drops are definitely an issue.

It's like the X1X and Pro have switched positions but they were not supposed to have based on paper specs.

Early days but still interesting, wonder what MS is thinking? Is it just a matter of PlayStation being the lead platform and getting more dev time and nothing they can do or is it down to hardware/software inefficiencies?

That torch scene with a big gap in fps screams of something that can be easily patched.

From the best thread in GAF thanks to Donarido.

Regarding all the talk about Xbox dev tools maturity, Fafalada (game dev and long-time member here and other boards) said on Ree that GDK/gamecore is more mature than all previous Xbox generations SDKs at launch. And also better than what other consoles had at launch in the past. Basically another source corroborating what the Dirt 5 developer has said about Xbox dev tools.

Here's the thing, nobody expected the PS5 to be the better performing platform for multiplatform games. What was being said was that the Series X would be 30%+ better, the PS5 wouldn't be able to handle ray tracing, etc, etc, with nothing to substantiate those claims. When people said that theoretical peak teraflops don't tell the whole story... Well you know what happened. Yet here we are. The egg on their face is 100% deserved.

Egg on the face is deserved, especially with that damn guy. But pointing to that guy in particular isn't a good source to begin with. That dude is a known Xbox Zealot. Anything he says should be taken with.....actually, no one should really be listening to him to begin with. I am more than willing to call a stone a stone, I don't have a dog in the race, but we can extrapolate from past data that we will start to see better performing multiplats on the XsX. Ubisoft isn't a great measuring stick on tech. They never have been. They have a lot of great tech that they don't put a ton of effort into, so it's not surprising to me to see these results in Valhalla. As it stands, past data extrapolation doesn't work for this title, but I DO think we'll see differences moving ahead as we start to pull away from last-gen. We'll see. I don't really give a shit who wins as I'll eventually get both consoles like I've always done. I just think it'd be foolhardy to rubber-stamp a statement that says PS5 will have the best multiplats going forward when the likelihood of that being true is pretty low.

Xbox hw is just unbalanced with bottlenecks everywhere probably.

MS has got to go to 1080p + DLSS to catch up, fast. Still just a band aid though. MS tools guys must be in a panic now.

Someone sent me a clip of his latest vid where he's literally saying wait till 2021 for the SX advantages he's been preaching about and promising for launch, to materialize. I don't know him personally but I've seen him called out on twitter repeatedly for pushing baseless and false info.

I'm not going to pretend to be a tech expert but what I can say the following with confidence. Devs & publishers are going to focus their time and energy on the platform that can get the most sales on. Make no mistake, the series X is a beast and the most powerful. But Activision put the most time and optimization in PS5's version of call of duty for a reason.

And the mature tools coming hot for 2020 2021 isn't going to change that.
JESUS tapdancing CHRIST.
Also that's the thing with Xbox. It's always a 'Wait & See' with them.

No wonder he blocked Jaffe on twitter. These guys are calling out Xbox and it's not like these claims are false or made up. They royally fucked their own launch.

I still find it hard to believe that more mature development tools are meant to suddenly take us from a situation where you're seeing a 25% lower performance in places, to the expected 20% or more better it was made out to be.

I'm not saying it can't happen mind, but it would be totally unprecedented in the 30 years of gaming I've experienced.

Besides which, even if they are more mature, the tools will still improve and show gains on PS5 too. It's not like there will be no further refinement or innovation on the other end.

It just feels like even those with technical knowledge were so certain of what the results were going to be, that they're unable to accept that that assumption was wrong, and are looking for any reason they can think of to keep their preconceived notions going.

Look where that TFLOPs talk got people looking stupid because it's the only thing they know.

That extra compute is just like the SPUs on PS3 if devs can't come up with a useful use for it it is useless.

If we still had week Jaguar CPUs in these consoles the extra compute would help more & devs would be moving stuff from the CPU to the GPU early but for now it will be rare to see devs pushing the limits of GPU compute.
