Red Dead Redemption 2 is, quite simply, the greatest achievement in gaming, and possibly the best game ever made

Having just played through it again recently, I was at a lost for words when I finished my second playthrough.

The writing, the music, the characters. The amount of quality on display is just awe-inspiring. And I now believe Arthur is the best protagonist of any game I have ever played, hands down.

Screw the nay-sayers. I have RDR2 in my top three of all time. It really is that good.

Everything about it is amazing except for the overall feel. It just doesn't feel like a western at all. It's basically GTA:1900s. As a major fan of western movies, they could of done so much more to make the game more like a western but instead it's just an open world game that's skinned with people and objects for the late 1800s.

Waiting for CP 2077, playing RDR II main story for the 3rd time. Such a masterpiece in every level. After all those hours I still discover details or random encounter, I love this game so much.

The OST is also amazing, hearing the first note of some music instantly bring back memories:

So yeah, this is Art for me. Gameplay isn't for everyone though.

The music is so goddamn incredible. In both games. RDR's UN is some of the single best pieces of DLC ever made, up there with the absolute best of them. Shame they didn't do the same for RDR2.

I played it all the way through and I really respect all of the hard work that went into the making of it.
Story was engaging at times, though it didn’t grab me thát much. Graphics were really good.
My main complaint: felt overtly long, stretched out and gameplay was tedious at times. Sometimes felt like a chore.

- bad controls
- braindead AI
- awful input lag
- bloated campaign
- inconsistent writing (murdering a whole town to save a piece of shit lol)
- 2002 mission design

Definite no to best game of all time. I appreciated its world, character performances and graphics, but it's very flawed and gets the "game" part mostly wrong.

Game of the Year.

One plays like a dream and the other like a nightmare. Both had top-tier production values, storytelling (Sadie Adler aside) and graphics. They did the right thing.

Plus fuck Rockstar habit of downgrading their games with patches, that's the most infuriating shit ever.
The only RDR2 will always be 1.00 for me.
What they changed

I pissed off law enforcement st one point and now they swarm my ass everywhere I go. That annoyed me so I dropped it. It really is beautiful though. I'll have to go back at some point and work that out.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Wasnt for me personally. Just too slow and too much like the dozen Rockstar games that came before. This games needed to break up the formular. But I can totally see how its mind blowing if you have less experience with their games. The game is certainly an outstanding achievement in many areas and oozes atmosphere left and right.

I just could not bring myself to keep playing. After the effect of the shiny graphics and good acting has worn off, the actual gameplay and story progression didnt feel good and crawled at a snails pace.
At least the game has tought me that sometimes less is more and that games dont need item pick up animations.

You know for all the bitching about the management aspects, they should've leaned into it more, or at least offered a hardcore mode.

You never need to take care of camp, and money is useless like midway through chapter 3. Therefore you never need to use the open world activities at all, instead "It's well I just feel like robbing someone so fuck it". Meanwhile the story is treating me like a scrappy outlaw barely getting by. The game is way too forgiving.

How is it mechanically? Technically, the best game I've experienced is TLOU2. It was too long and the story didn't reach the heights of the first to be the GOAT but my lord, technically it was a beast. The animations, art and graphics were absurd.

Well, I really liked RDR2, but imo TLOU2 has noticeably better gameplay mechanics, controls and responsiveness and RDR2 is even longer than TLOU2 which is saying a lot. Visually, TLOU2 is in a league of its own, but RDR2 easily compares to it in most categories especially on the One X where it looks insane. TLOU2 has the characters models I feel, but backgrounds in most cases are very comparable and can go either way.

For me RDR2 represents everything I hate about current way western developers go about designing their “game” because to me it seems most western developers want to get away from making actual game and go more towards immersion simulation which I have zero interest.

Biggest reason I like gaming to get unbelievable experience, not realistic one. This is why I’m slowly losing interest in western games.

It's good but it's certainly the greatest game of all time.

The story for this game can only be described as "meandering", in fact it isn't much of a story at all, it's more of "a series of things that happen" than it is a story in the way the first game was a story, with it's setup of "John Marston is forced to hunt down his former allies" which was perfect, RDR2 on the other hand is "the Van Der Linde gang are on the run from the law, then a bunch of things happen"

Sure it's frequently interesting, but it's also frequently just kind of... dull, it drags on for way too long I feel.

I also dislike how they create an entire cowboy game but none of the new areas are desert, it's all grassy plains, swamps and forested mountains and hills, what's the point of that?

There is a desertic area but you kinda go there in the endgame, it's called armadillo, if my memory doens't fuck with me.

The story the setting is unmatched by anything ever released and I don't think anyone except Rockstar them selves can top that in a very long time , but the gameplay shortcomings were very noticeable, if this gameplay had gunplay like maxpayne 3 and the controls were more responsive this would've been easily my game of the generation

Still, I hate the controls with all myself. Come back to RDR2 after played a sony first parties game, it really hurts.

I agree loved it, story is fantastic, very ambitious. Love how it seems like a close nit family at the start and how they break apart over the course of in game years. Loved how it made me feel about the characters. Graphics amazing.

I totally agree.
Especially the story is the best story ever made in the gaming history.
Arthur is one of the best characters in gaming history.
The detail in the game is insane, even on One S I asked myself how the fuck was possible that the console wasn't exploding during the game.

For sure RDR is in the top 10 of the greatest game of all time.

I know, that's why I said none of the new areas are desert, the game reuses the New Austin area from the first game, but that's it and none of RDR2's main story takes place there.

I would have liked to have seen areas based on Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, that would have looked gorgeous on 2's engine, but nope.

I consider RDR is one of the best game but I can’t give it to the RDR2 due to out of date control scheme. However, Arthur is still one of the best protagonist in open world game and it is goddamn beautiful world.

I don't like that game much at all. I've started it like 3 times thinking this will be the playthrough where it clicks, but it just never has

I find it tedious

I wish these tightwads unlocked the frames for next gen owners. But since GTA5 never even got a pro or x patch, I have better luck enjoying a fork in the eye

I much prefer variety over going through the desert over and over again. But if you want desert, it's still there.

Technically it is a masterpiece indeed, but as a game, as a whole, well the reception is mixed, to say the least.

I found RDR 2 way more impressive from a tech demo perspective as in, "Look at this beautiful world we built and what you can do" than an actual game. The controls were awful and making you fall off your horse if you bump into a spec of dirt was super annoying. Riding horses didn't give me the sense of freedom and exploration as in a lot of other games. Here it felt like a chore because any little thing will send you flying off your horse.

It's still on my PC, but because of the launch, where i couldn't even launch the game at the time for 2 days because of the ott drm RSC, i haven't got that far into RDR 2, the game looks good and played ok, i just haven't gone back to it yet.

It's the most immersive game I ever played. And Arthur has the best voice acting, is a slow burn. Sadly imo, the price for a long, story was the freedom of your character. I would rather discover all the stories in the game all by myself than with the group. I mean, the game is full of secrets but you always has things to do for your band.

I think the game is incredible. I enjoyed the game and the exploration and the story. But is it the best game ever, I don’t think so. It may be the most impressive game of this generation, but there are better games. Games that gave me more joy and excitement. BOTW is probably the best game of the generation for me.
Games with a narrative that measure up are God of War(Barlog edition), mass effect series, system shock, Bioshock. Games that have brought more joy have been games like Mario 64, Link to the past, bionic commando NES and more.

but I am glad you love the game. I think the wayit looks and the exploration are incredible.

'spoiler'

One thing I had an issue with was how they ignored Arthurs developments in regards to Hosiah and Lenny, when they died, he barely cared, which made no sense considering they built those 2 up and how imporant they were to him, same with the scene early on when Dutch refused to help Arthur in the oil plant, and Arthur just made a comment about it and ignored it. The breakup of the gang was held off for too long. The whole jungle part was bad for many reasons, and the combat has some odd issues where the lock and shot system that works alright in single encounters, is tiresome when you have to deal with large groups. A bit too many missions that comes down to big shootouts, and some sections that drag on, and they didn't have to make the animations so slow and consistent throughtout the game in every facet, I don't not mind it, in fact I liked it, but it did alienate a lot of people.

That's said, it's an absolutely legendary incredible video game, top 3 of the generation.

i am playing it right now for the first time, i am simply in - fucking - awe
the characters, the graphics, the VA, the open world, the story (so far) how the fuck did they manage to craft this for current gen consoles i'll never wrap my head around it
this could change the more i play, but right now, this is already in my top 5 games of all time, might even go for the platinum trophy for this one
no, no and again NO.

What they changed
They got rid of light sources, severely downgraded the ambient occlusion, which is what gave the game such a strong, stunning "physical" presence, introduced visible pop-in which was miraculously nowhere to be seen before, and God only knows what else. They announced patches to fix the game on several occasions, but ultimately they really didn't given the still equally compromised AO, missing light sources and noticeable LOD transitions.

These are examples of how the game looks in 1.00, on Pro:

As i often say, RDR2 1.00 is my favourite looking game ever and most impressive piece of tech i've ever seen. What's lacking compared to The Order: 1886 or TLOU2 is (used to be) compensated with it's huge scope, the best LOD system ever, the most impressive dynamic lighting, complex simulations and top-tier AO.

Great looking game; I've yet to see it on PC because I have it on console and don't want to double dip. On another note, you need to wrap those images in a spoiler tag; they make scrolling up or down this page a chore.

The actual in-game images don't look as impressive as the photo-mode/ in-engine images (whatever they are). They still look good but not nearly as impressive as the other ones. Also, you need to wrap those images in a spoiler tag; they make scrolling up or down this page a chore.
All my pictures are 100% In-Game so i don't know what you're talking about. Some first person, others third person. There's no Photo-Mode in RDR2 1.00.

I edited my post after I took a better look. One of the first-person photos looked too good, namely the white interior of a house with columns. However, after looking at it more closely, on a large screen, I saw that it does look as good as it did when I first glanced at it; it definitely looks in-game.

They've introduced AO again in a recent patch, look it up.

I dont know about the light sources and LOD transitions tho. Never noticed these downgrades, only AO.

The game without AO really wasnt the same, I agree with you.

The game just didn't click with me. It's beautiful, well-written, and have great performances. However, I didn't have fun playing it. It was too slow and the gameplay is clunky. Great for those who loved it though.

As i stated, that's what Rockstar said. In truth however the reintroduced AO was still considerably inferior and nowhere near as aggressive as the original version. There was a GIF on gtaforums.com which perfectly illustrated the difference, probably in this Thread which will give you all the info you need:

Good news is that PS5 compatibility with v1.00 is confirmed already, so it will be possible to play it free from the hair dryer sound in the background (1.00 is by far the loudest a Pro can sound) and at completely stable performances.

Hear hear TC. But I think I’m on a next level of adoration for this game. It was ”I want to play this before I die” type of a game meaning if it was last thing I’ll ever play I could die happy.

It’s more than a game really. Nothing, absolutely nothing in gaming history can come close to it except Witcher 3.
Seriously, words cannot describe how much this game meant and still means to me. Platinum trophy also proves that.

EDIT: so happy it sold 35M copies. Shits all over anything else this gen except GTA V.
