More info on PS5 backwards compatibility leaked via PS Store web source code

I'm more interested in what PS4 features won't work on PS5. Maybe it's just legal protection, but is there anything obvious I'm missing? Features we know aren't coming forward?
There are probably a bunch of minor features that nobody really knows about that won't carry over. Like the ability to have streaming viewers interact with your game - this was only used in a handful of games I think, and I am sure the console streaming setup will be different, so they likely wouldn't support it on the PS5.

so will boost mode effect load times, or will those be just as fast/slow either way?
Loading screens aren't really loading screens. It gives the game chance to do a mountain of things involving every component. The SSDs allow for brute force in terms of getting that data where it needs to go, but ultimately it still needs to be handled in a particular way.

Because we don't know how PS5 will handle backwards compatibility, we don't know how much the improved components will play into that. If there are PS4 compatibility modes, you'll see the times improve. If it can take full advantage of the components it'll improve more. Any game optimised for PS5 will get better again.

So there will be improvements, but don't expect 2 seconds for any BC game and you won't be disappointed.

Even assuming this is real, this doesn't put us any ahead of what we already know.

Even if "99%" of games work with BC, they need error messages for anything that doesn't. Is that 10 at launch? Is that 1000? Who knows, until Sony tells us.

What I've been worried about for a while now and everyone said I was crazy and that PS4 games "would just work".

I guess we'll find out in November how many games are actually backwards compatible, because it sure doesn't seem like Sony is going to give us any solid details themselves.
So, as you, my concerns are becoming true......the secretism that Sony is into, is for a reason. A bad one.

What do you mean "they haven't figured out"? You've got cloud saves with PS Plus. They work with PS Now.

compared to Xbox One, the PS4 cloud saves are a hassle to work with. on Xbox One cloud saves are free and sync automatically at all times. games that have the "Play Anywhere" tag also seamlessly sync save files across Xbox One and PC.

Jim said 99% of PS4 titles will work on PS5, he just didn't specify the "when" part. Hopefully, the "when" is at launch.

All I know is, all games from (I think) July 2020 will work, as well as the top 100 games according to playtime. And we'll have 18 PS4 games via the PS+ collection.

It's nice to see that the primary console stuff is still going to work, since a lot of the games I buy for console I buy them with a friend and we share the accounts.

Only really care about a few games myself, most of them already confirmed BC (by way of Sony's PSN+ dealio)
You all love jumping to conclusions don’t you

So Sony added these messages to their web code, but some random YouTuber's deleted tweet from months ago proves them wrong?

lol.

I think majority of games will be backwards compatible day 1 and that message is for the 1 percent of games that are not.

I also think boost mode will be used 90 percent of the time similar to Series X improvements, boost mode will not be enabled 10 percent of the time if for some reason there is compatibility issues so drops down to PS4 Pro or PS4 clock speeds.

Only if you have been paying money, yes.

It would definitely be nice if they at the least allowed a one time unpaid backup to transfer to PS5.

Sure you can use a larger than 16GB drive to back up your PS4 saves, but as someone who double backs up everything I hate hate hate the idea of going that way if you sell the PS4 before buying the PS5 and running with a single copy of your games on sometimes questionable drives lol.

That said I also just reupped on PSN on the CDkeys deal, so problem solved here, but for sure fans should push for this to be a free ecosystem service like the competition.

Why are people acting like what's shown here is bad? Because they have a text for when the game doesnt work, it all of a sudden means that their BC sucks? Does nobody use their brain here?

Welcome to NeoGAF. What's a brain?

Kinda obvious that they'd have to keep the compatibility whitelist in the OS, because otherwise it'd force a network check-in every time an old PS4 disc was inserted to confirm its functionality. Which would of course be a pain if you were suffering a network or accessibility issue.

This brings up a good point. What if someone were to buy a PS5, and use it completely as an offline console. Which (if any) PS4 games would it recognize? Would the "day one" system software contain at least some of the PS4 games in the whitelist?

Alternatively, would there be a way that a user could force the system to attempt to run the game anyway?

That's why I love the way backward compatibility was treated on systems like the Atari 7800, Game Boy Advance, and PlayStation 2.

I would assume there would be situations where a game wouldn't work, like PSVR.

PS5 has support for PSVR.

What a stupid conclusion based on error messages. Of course they have to cover the various possibilities no matter how rare and that in no way negates the 99% of games working.

Hope you guys are being paid well for this. Otherwise, I suggest a course in logic.
Yeah i gotta agree here. Those are just default messages. Doesnt tell you anything about frequency.

Don't care if all PS4 games are back compat or not, as long as the ones I want to play are, lol.

Most will probably work though, the exceptions will be straight up trash like Life Of Black Tiger.

"All 99% of them will be backwards compatible"

Im still going with the initial number of top 100 most played games to start will be bc. I just wanna be able to put away my old consoles.

Not surprised, Jim Ryan is no fan of Backward compatibility. It was more than likely a low priority feature.
I almost believe Jim Ryan's "99 percent of ps4 games" will be compatible. But I believe this will be eventually and NOT at launch.

I should not have to explain this, but the existence of an error message for games that are flagged by the firmware as not compatible does not give you any kind of information about how many games will work or not.

I hacked Xbox Live and found an instance where, if you lose internet, it tells you that you've been disconnected from Xbox Live.

This must mean that they are completely removing Xbox Live!!

Because most people don't game on multiple different PS4s.
I do. Also with PS Now becoming more of a thing it highlights the problem more. I prefer playing on PS generally, but there is no denying this is an area that Xbox handles things better. On Xbox I can flip between the Xbox in my house, to one in the office and xCloud and not have to worry about manually transferring saves.

No chance, the assumption would have to be that the potential worst-case scenario of a hard-crash is a possibility. Risk would be too great... being able to force it at will would be nirvana for hackers.

For anyone too stupid to know what 99% compatibility means.

To be clear they said it's 99% of the games that they tested, not 99% of the complete library. I believe they said they tested thousands but who knows if that's 1001 or closer to 3000. It's still a little sketchy wording for me until I can see it myself.

What a fuckin' clusterfuck this whole PS5 marketing campaign, horrible messaging, terrible pre-orders and basically everything except games. There's only just a bit more than a month left and we still and basically know jack shit about PS5, backwards compatiblity etc. etc. etc. The whole marketing team and people responsible for communication with customers should be fired along with Jim Ryan:messenger_face_steam:(n)

I effin' want Jack Tretton back! NOW!👈:messenger_angry:

And those that do can just load their save from the PSN servers. Why is that so bad? I'm lost.

On Xbox is automatic. Just saying .. I love that feature. On ps you have set it up and it only goes for one console for automatic uploads.

I can't believe they haven't figured out cloud saves,I haven't manually touched a save file since the 360. How are playstation fans ok with this?

I can jump from multiple Xbox consoles in different locations or jump on xcloud and my saves are just there. Hell last week I downloaded Alan Wake after finishing the Control DLC and my xbox 360 Alan Wake save was there from 2010!
But they've sorted cloud saves since the PS3. I use the same save file for FFX for example that I played on PS3, on my PS4.

It will probably be the top 100 games or so that they had claimed and the rest added by updates as they go.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post last week, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President, Jim Ryan, stated that “99 percent” of all PS4 games will be backwards compatible and playable on PS5.

ok everyone go to bed now

Since when is 1001 the same as thousands?

Sony really needs a showcase of the UI,BC ect this leaking is sad like what are they waiting on price and dates out like let's goooooo.

I'm not even sure most even care man..... I'll see the UI when I get the system, BC? Thats nice...... I own a PS4 Pro and have no plans of getting rid of it (or my launch edition for that matter) So long as I can play Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS5, I simply don't care that much and even looking at the data, most don't....

So I want to see the UI too, I want to know what media features it will have like MKV support etc. Don't really give a fuck when that is announced though. Those are not deal breakers and none of those features are the reason why I'm buying a PS5. God Of War is coming, Demon Souls remake is happening, day 1. Thats all I needed to know as I buying it to play PS5 games first and foremost. The rest of that stuff is simply icying on the cake.

What time is it?
They've said 99% of games will work so obviously there are some games that aren't compatible and need an error message stating as such. Now we have to wait and see if 99% is true or not. /not worried yet.

I don't think they are fine tuning anything, I think they are simply waiting till a slow news day, week etc to control the media cycle.

It amazes me that people argue and fight over details that were answered MONTHS ago in the road to PS5 video time and time again.

There are a few people in here so busy downplaying this that they're not really thinking it through.

Yesterday we could safely presume 99 per cent compatibility was a "Kills 99 per cent of germs" style catch all. There was no 1 per cent list because there was no real 1 per cent. Plug and play.

This basically confirms that's not true. They wouldn't write this error message for one or two games. That would be much more case specific.

Equally, if that vague 1 per cent doesn't work, I don't believe they'd suggest you update your system just in case. The wording is weird if they're talking about some little indie game that 30 people bought.

What this confirms is that some games - be they the majority or the minority - need a download to run. Why would Sony say "We're continuing to make..." if it was a done deal for practically all games? Why would they use such active words if it wasn't at least planned to be a semi regular thing?

And as I said in my first post, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. We just need to know how much of that 99 per cent is available at launch and how it works which, yes, means it'd be nice to get an update.
