Marvels Avengers: Spiderman to be Exclusive to the Playstation version [Confirmed]

It’s never been a better time to be a spider-fan! The team at Crystal Dynamics, along with our partners, are overjoyed that we get to be a part of this hero’s gaming journey. We can’t wait for you to add Spider-Man to your Marvel’s Avengers roster in early 2021, and as we’ve promised before, he will be available at no additional cost to owners of the base game, exclusively on PlayStation.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy playing Marvel’s Avengers when it launches on PS4 on September 4, 2020 and comes to PS5 later this holiday!

That is a big scoop for Sony, although I am not sure I approve of nailing down a fan favorite to a piece of plastic this way.

I adore spiderman as a character but In this game instance, I think spiderman should be for everyone.

I don't see the problem with this, it's a similar situation to say Tekken where you got guest characters exclusive to the platform holder. The only difference is Spiderman isn't really a "guest" character and could easily have fitted into the game across all platforms. But can you imagine if Sony added another guest character like Drake or Kratos, everybody would be calling them stupid for wasting Spiderman.

Xbox version gets Squirrel Girl right? that's not bad, would have preferred Craig personally.

This is kind of gross, lmao. I feel like making Avengers a PS5 exclusive would've been a better practice than this, haha.

Why? Because Spider-Man’s game is PS exclusive or what exactly?

Because Sony flat out owns the Spiderman license. It's why there was a big deal made when Spiderman came to the marvel cinematic universe. It's from the days before marvel had their own entertainment division. Sony had Spiderman and Fantastic Four I think, Fox had the XMen and some other stuff. It's just the way it is.

Why are people upset this is a Sony owned licensed character why wouldn’t they use this to benefit themselves? That’s good business.

You're speaking in oxymorons to defend your favorite corporation. You don't license something you own. Sony does not own Spiderman; Marvel does. They license him for movie rights. Sony gets absolutely 0 dollars from merchandise, IP rights, royalties, etc.

Because it's not a "Sony owned character" at all, they own the film rights.
Exactly, nothing stopped him from appearing in Marvel vs Capcom on Xbox or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 on Switch within this same generation.
This is not their character, this is a money hat.

No no no please no!! Not the same spiderman! Please use a cheap knockoff from the movies like the rest of the Avengers and leave the PS spiderman out of that universe.

Even people on the PS4 reddit are annoyed by this, lol, and they're usually pretty tribal. Seems to not be making the impression they expected. I wouldn't mind too much if it was Insomniacs Spiderman. That would make the moneyhat understandable, honestly, or at least to me. But it's just regular ol' Spiderman. And it's not even coming at launch, lmao. What.

Nope, games too, they were previously held by Activision. Whether that contract expired due to a set date or just because Activision didn't do anything with the IP for X amount of time I cannot say.

No, they really don't. Why do you think he's in MVC on Xbox? Sony bought Insomniac and they have the Spider-Man movie rights. Sony don't own shit, they see nothing from the backend of merchandise.

I don’t get why everyone get upset. If you want to play as Spider-Man just buy a PS4 or PS5. The whole point of exclusivity is that you buy the console, not that you whine and complain about it not being on your console of choice.

It’s like complaining to Sony about an exclusive feature to LG TVs.

The wrong part about exclusivity is when a game releases on a console, but its sequel doesn’t. And it applies in many things, like how a TV show seasons 1-3 might be in Netflix, but seasons 4-6 could be on HBO Max.

Those things are wrong, but just having a game or content exclusive to a console it’s no wrong at all. (Again, when it comes to new IPs and standalone games).

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man in games (previously held by Activision), as Sony Pictures does for Spider-Man in movies/series.

That’s what I asked at the beginning since thats what makes more sense but then Aion002 Aion002 came and said money.

Activision just had a license to make games pending feedback, not the rights outright. Sony owns all rights to use SM in games AND films. Also this is them lending license to Square Enix for inclusion of SM in this game, perhaps in exchange of marketing the game on PS platform, which is the platform with biggest market share.

To everyone saying that Sony owns the gaming rights to Spider-Man. This is incorrect; they only own the movie rights. Remember he and various other spider-verse characters are in the MUA3 game on Switch, and the various mobile games from Marvel. This is a separate deal between Sony and either Marvel or Square.

I'm curious to know how Sony "owning" spiderman actually works.

  • If Spider-Man appears in comics and video games it is under the control of Marvel Comics (and Disney – the parent company of Marvel Comics).
  • If Spider-Man appears on film it is under the control of Sony Pictures.
  • Spider-Man merchandise is owned and controlled by Marvel Comics (and Disney – the parent company of Marvel Comics).

So why then was Spider-man exclusive for PS4 and does Sony get exclusive characters? Spider-man appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is controlled by Marvel Entertainment (Disney). However, as summarized above, Sony has the rights to Spider-man in movies. Therefor, Marvel needs the permission of Sony to use Spider-man in the MCU (Avengers etc.)
It is heavily speculated that Sony allowed Marvel to use Spider-man in the MCU under certain conditions, one of those conditions is speculated to be that Marvel in return allows Sony to have exlusive use of Spider-man in videogames on PlayStation.

In summary, Sony allowed Spider-man to appear in the MCU movies on certain conditions, one of which is the exclusive use of Spider-man in videogames.

Sony does not own game rights, Marvel does, and they aren't ever "selling rights" again after what happened in 1999 lol

To clarify, the only people who ’own’ Spider-man are Marvel.

But the licence rights to use the character for movies were bought by Sony in 1998, and the game rights were bought by Sony in 2014/15.

Therefore, nobody can make a movie or game featuring Spider-man except Sony owned companies.

And what about the PC? Isn't more the best way to play multiplatforms?
