Dear 3rd-parties: If you can't port games to Switch without going super low res, don't do it

Needed to get this off my chest.

I got Call of Cthulhu for Switch today. As a big Lovecraft-fan I really love the atmosphere so far (I'm at chapter 3), and the reviews saying it starts slow, well, so do Lovecraft novels.

But there's one big issue: The image quality is SUPER UNSHARP. It's so low res that it permanently looks like It's out of focus. Clearly that's because it's a quick and dirty port, just lowering resolution and calling it a day.

This isn't the first time. God Eater 3 Switch is similar, its resolution is so low you can't even see a character's face unless you force the camera closer by standing next to a wall. The worst example, however, would be that upcoming Disaster-game (forgot the name) that's coming for PS4 and Switch. The Switch-version is a joke. Go download the demo from the Japanese eshop if you don't believe me. Nobody should buy that version.

I'm not a graphics guy, you know. After all, I'm a Nintendo-fan. But the one thing important to me is a clean, crisp image. Drop poly count, details, shadows, whatever. But resolution us important. And it can bedone. Skyrim looks nice. Assassin's Creed 4
, too. Witcher 3 also. Clearly the issue is that some publishers just take a PS4-game, lower resolution until the game runs and that's it.

Please stop doing that. Thank.you.

This is very true. I'm happy DF does some switch reviews , they need to do more to give switch owners a better look at how the port is. It sucks many buy and find out later the devs slacked on a port.

Well switch is about 1/4 of xbox one performance when docked, so it can be impossible to port "big games" and have res+graphics on acceptable level.

Dont blame devs, blame nintendo.

Devs could just not make ports because switch is too weak, better than nothing?

I just dont get stuff for switch because most interesting ones arent even 720p.

Also, witcher 3 doesnt look good on switch. It looks like blurry shit. Or at least werent on native res on release.

That's the kind of shitpost I expected. "lol Switch weaksauce accept it dude". 🙄

No. It's perfectly possible to make games with clean resolution on Switch. It either takes more effort ... or shouldn't be done. No Nintendo's fault, not the hardware's fault. Some 3rd-parties are greedy and *choose* to make these bad ports.

Prove it Mr. Game Dev.
Port Doom 3 instead of Doom 2006 ? Port Final Fantasy X instead of XII ? Port Dragon Quest VIII instead of XI ? This is actually pretty easy !

Sounds like over entitled fanboyism. When there's money to be made, publishers will do everything they can to get it. Are you going to miracle the switch into good ports?

I agree. I'm not a huge graphics guy either, but when the drop-off in graphics is obvious, it really breaks your immersion while playing a game. I noticed this in the Switch version of Saints Row the Third. In several instances running around the city, I felt like I was playing a slightly upgraded version of Vice City Stories on the PSP.

I love DF, but i dont really like their Switch coverage. They are always so blown away that the Switch can run some games (Doom, Wolfenstein, Witcher 3 etc) that they completely forgive the shortcomings. Its like they are in a constant trance when it comes to Switch.

Oh no, another one of those "rants". lol

You already know the answer. In many cases it's either this way or nothing, if it is nothing Switch platform would suffer.

I'm personally not interested on buying Doom or The Witcher 3 on Switch but i know people who did it and enjoyed the games there anyway because they can only play games on portable systems.

Also i played the Switch version of God Eater 3 and it's NOT that bad.

Long story short: it's not just about you, respect the other users.

It is true they forgive the shortcomings but its due to the understanding of what's under the hood , when they do get overly excited it's because they definitely see what has been pulled off.

I also want to mention that historically we've always had bad 3rd party ports on handheld systems.

If they continue to make them, there is an audience interested (and it's not even a question, Bethesda is happy with software sales on Switch so far)

I know but i still think the Switch games should be judged for what they are, not simply that its a miracle it pulled a certain port off.

"Entitled", wtf. Some of you Sony console warriors really need to be more subtle ... 🙄

Ff12 is fine, though (it's a ps2-port, come on), dq11s is just good enough (any worse and I'd complain).

Really, go play the negative examples I mentioned if you don't believe me. God Water 3 and Disaster have demos on the eshop.

Having said that, DF did make one of my fave vids from this gen, Johns Ark Survival Evolved Switch vid. If anyone has never seen it, search for it on DF's Youtube page, its legendary, the start is like god.

EDIT. Here it is -

There's many good ports, including Bethesda's.

I mentioned the games that managed it fine.
Not all games are the same. Skyrim looks like a fucking ps2 game ffs.

Yeah just port a bunch old games for people too fucking stupid to buy a real console. Amazing. You people are so entitled.

I can't argue that point. Lol. Maybe it was fine with the Doom port and I understand the Witcher port but not every port.

So... you want resolution, but are fine with 720p docked/540p handheld? (and both are dynamic, so can drop below that)
And it has a blur filter smeared over the screen. I really don’t know how Witcher 3 can be used as an example of a clean image.

I'd rather play an awesome old game with a clean picture than a blurry game that is 2 years old anyway.

Ff12 is fine
This is a PS2 port that is not even native resolution. What a joke...

I remember when people complained about the Wii's 480p max resolution.

Sorry but resolution has been and will always be the domain of the hardcore. Nintendo's previous handheld screen was functionally 240p.
The problem is not the screen resolution. The problem is the fact of displaying anything that is not native resolution. And in the case of the Switch, many games are really really far from native resolution but anyway, even if you are displaying 900p in a 1080p TV, it will be blurry by definition.

People don't realize how much better a picture is when the screen that displays it actually gets a clean, native resolution signal.

Fast RMX is the only Switch title worthy of running on another platform from a graphics standpoint. Those dudes can code just as they did on the Wii U.

Of course, it doesn't have the overhead of interactivity or other things going on in game outside of fellow racers and animated aspects of the track.

There's a reason Nintendo goes with the "cutesy" graphics crap as far as 1st party. They are limited on what they can do just as first party dev's largely are.

I'm not denying the problem you are describing is a real thing, I'm just saying it doesn't matter to the target audience.

As an aside, to experience true low-res Switch goodness try out the Diablo 3 'Darkening of Tristram' event going on right now... :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

Again? Oh for fuck sake😂😂

The Switch isn’t an Xbox, PS4 nor a PC. Why can’t you just accept this fact instead of annoying us every two days?

Why do you go full-console warrior when I explained it perfectly fine in that op?

There a great ports there are shit ports i want developers to stop doing shit ports. That has zero to do with the hardware. If you can't port a game with a minimum acceptable resolution, don't do it.

Ultimately the problem here is your buying cross platform games on the worst possible system from a hardware standpoint. Switch has the weakest hardware of all 3 major options for gaming. You dont get to complain when your switch games dont look or run as well as they do on a ps4 or a pc.

Sure switch is great if you're like me and want to play mario kart or links awakening. Aside from that though I stay away from it and got call of cthulhu on ps4.

Assassins Creed IV looks good because the current gen version only had a bit better graphics and resolution, not even 60 FPS. The last gen version had unlocked framerate and because of that, initially the xbox One X owners could run both 3 and 4 at around 50-60 FPS until it was locked at 30 in an update.

Anyone that doesn’t agree with you is automatically a console warrior? Lol, what a waste of time. Good luck with that brain

Nintendo seal of quality said goodbye back when the Wii was a hit

Switch is The fastest selling console this generation and they know Nintendo consoles go gangbusters then fall off a cliff at the end sales wise so they are just getting in while the iron is hot.....until Nintendo release a comparable spec machine to the others you will continue to get shitty ports

But then you get a Digital Foundry video saying how INCREDIBLE your game is for being on Switch, despite the game running at 720p, inconsistent sub-30 FPS and turned down graphical effects across the board! And reduced geometry too! AMAZING!

Heh, in other words, I don't like their coverage, but hey, the console is selling well and people on Switch aren't too picky, they don't mind a low quality port, so...sure, why shouldn't developers port it?

Meh, I'm thankful to be able to finally play games I wouldn't have been able to play otherwise. Currently enjoying Doom and I'll be picking up Skyrim and The Witcher 3 soon.

I'd take a clean image any day of the week.

I'm playing through Dragon Quest XI and it looks good, not great.. I chose that version for the extra content and better music and it works but that's as far as I'd go for these ports.

At least that's a colourful game so you can get away with it but I'd say Witcher III I could not handle.

And if you read my op you'd see that I'm saying Skyrim is a good port ...

(does nobody read beyond the title? :( )

Switch can't do good ports, devs need to chop, reduce and drop so many things to make games even run. Are you saying that it's ok for ports to be kinda shitty, but if they are TOO shitty then that is unacceptable?
