Wkd BO 07•07-09•17 - Minions cede dominion over box office, Homecoming KING

Man that isn't a good Saturday for Spidey at all. I'm surprised really, its a good film. I guess maybe audiences really are just getting tired of the reboots. Not that this is a bomb by any means but it isn't taking off either.

Bummer for Apes but not surprising. Truly the Star Trek Beyond of this year.

Oh sorry, yeh it might not pass WW, but will do better then the amazing series at least. I mean WW has beaten all of spidey Domestic numbers except for the first one lol.

It's an improvement over the Amazing series for sure. And this film cost less so overall I think it should be viewed as a success.

I really wonder what Sony thinks about this though.

Well didn't they expect an 80 million or so opening weekend? So I am sure they happy it beat their expectations lol

Yea you've been on a roll

I bet some enterprising young man with a shitload of time could mod Mirror's Edge to set it in WW1 and populate the buildings with idiot Germans for Diana to pinball into buildings and walls and the roads below.

I would play a Wonder Woman endless runner where the point is to consistently just smash soldiers to death. Set up a combo system. Make it like a rhythm game.

There's a shitstorm coming when Infinity War does less than Age of Ultron
I'm kinda expecting this tbh. Unless it delivers on the action spectacle front, moves at a brisk prace and manages to be fun I can't see this breaking out much more than the last two Avengers. People will turn out in droves OW of course but unless the Russo brothers knock it out of the park I don't see it breaking $600 million.

In all honesty who knows. With this many stars the marketing campaign will probably be absolutely insane.

Infinity War will outgross Age of Ultron.

Not significantly though. The MCU in general I feel is pretty much leveled off in terms of peak viewers. I don't see a significant amount of more people going to see Infinity War that didn't see Ultron.

Looking like a pretty mediocre opening for Planet of the Apes unfortunately. Very good flick and conclusion to the story of the best main character in blockbusters at the moment.

Between this and Alien Covenant 20th century fox needs to think about what to do next with these franchises. Alien is of course more troubling given the endless trash.

The whole concept of a movie franchise is seriously broken. The general rule is, make movies until they are so terrible that they've outgrown their welcome. Some characters/stories are best told in a movie or two, and left alone.

Alien is a prime example. I don't think there's any compelling reason to create any new stories in that world. Or at the very least, hollywood is incapable of the level of creativity and vision to come up with something new and fresh in that world.

I like the idea that some studios show some pretty serious restraint when it comes to sequels and then turning things into franchises. The Incredibles is a great example. It's taken a long time for the 2nd movie to come about because Brad Bird didn't want to tackle the project until he could come up with a good story to tell. He wasn't just handed a bag of money and told "we need an Incredibles 2 next year - get on it"

Fox needs to give Ridley 75 mil to wrap up his weird Frankenstein love letter to himself and then let it rest for 5-6 years before letting someone in to either completely reboot everything or go find a weird corner of the universe and tell a self-contained story in it.

Apes will be fine, it's actually a quality flick. Should have decent legs and overseas it'll do well.

Comparing it to the Alien franchise is embarrassing

Apes is pretty much the most constant trilogy in recent memory in terms of quality. Seems like each movie is better then the last, at least critically. Hope it does well.

Gotta be either that, the initial ladder walk to no mans land, or the first deflection.

The first full shot of Diana in the Wonder Woman gear followed by the bullet deflection is going to be considered iconic. It's one of the best moments in any superhero movie.

$200m OW with a total gross under Ultron, I think that would make for an interesting discussion.

that's what they said but i'm sure they had much higher expectations then $80m. Every studio low ball's their expectations so they can claim a success when it exceeds them

regardless, the opening weekend for Homecoming was great....the bigger concern are its legs

If it opens to 200million, it needs to have legs as bad as Batman to gross less than Ultron and there is no way it will do that.

I think 500 million for the first Avengers and then a drop to below 400 for the sequel.

Civil War had a 2.27 multiplier off a $179m opening. I can easily see Ultron having a run that was like $200m OW with a $440m final gross. It's absolutely going to be frontloaded as fuck, it's just a matter of how big the OW is.

I actually don't think it hits $200m OW, even Ultron didn't and people here are completing forgetting how insane the buzz for Ultron was.

Actually it could have CW legs and gross less than AoU on a 200M OW.
