Need a little help.
I need to turn back into the lizard guy to continue to the pirate zone
it's after you find the transformation room for the first time.
No idea where you can transform again. You can't go back to the lava area cause you need to be the lizard guy. Any ideas?

When you say
pirate zone
, where do you mean?

Alright so how do I
change with the Tasmanian sword?

Jump, and then up + attack while mid-air.

I would bang a hot farmer!
Debating one whether to get this or the Disney Collection that also released today...

...or maybe both...
I've decided that the Disney Afternoon Collection will only get my money if it's released physically or during a big sale.

Did I miss something when picking up the Tasmanian sword? I know how to use it thanks to Mollipens post, but I cant see where it tells you what to do in game?

Before I purchase the Switch version here in a few minutes.....

1080p docked? Smooth performance?

Yes, it's exactly the same as every other version in that regard, except obviously for the fact that it's also portable. It's got HD Rumble support too if you care about that.

It's the de facto superior version, honestly.

I had to ask my press contact. *heh* So far as I know, it doesn't explain, and originally on the Master System you needed two controllers to use it, so the method had obviously changed.

Minus achievements or trophies, which doesn't matter to me enough to me to impact my purchases. I do wish Nintendo would have checked that box though.

I have a lot of nostalgia for this series but the new art and music are too good not to use. I'm really enjoying it, died a few times and realising that I'll lose the consumable items when I die made me start using them freely.

Love the new visuals but I don't like the new music. :(

That was my thought as well to begin with. It grew quite well on me, and now I only switch to the classic tune when I'm back in town. I think the town theme has been burned into my mind, and hearing any other variant of it just messes my childhood memories up. I love all the effort that went into this remake.

wow. this game is pretty awesome and fun. its definitely an old school style game with a new skin.

i played this on the switch for about an hour and a half at the library on the switch. Amazing graphics, even on handheld mode.

1080p and locked 60fps.
Glad it's 60fps like the other versions. I'm kind of skeptical of anything running 1080p on the switch since the UI doesn't seem to run native resolution on my tv. I'm guessing that's just a UI issue and doesn't have to do with the switch's ability to render in 1080p at the moment

Can't wait to pick this up on my Switch today. Remains one of those games that just really clicked for me when I played it on an emulator as a kid. Here's hoping we get more Wonder Boy remakes or a new one!

this game is kicking my ass. I love it

I think it's funny how I've played the Monster World series in reverse. 4 definitely feels the best to play, but it's suuuuuuper linear compared to Wonder Boy in Monster World, and suddenly THAT game now feels lacking compared to the ability switching of the different forms in this. Shame swapping forms is a bit awkward.

The graphical treatment is amazing. The difference between the top of the village tower is hilarious - from generic stone tower on a single-colour background to a windmill treehouse against a sunset. It's gorgeous.

Bought this today on Switch to support the devs. Not gonna play it properly until I've finished Zelda but I did have a quick go, playing through to the village. This game is gorgeous, with the locked 60fps of buttery smooth goodness the icing on the cake.

You can play with new visuals and old music.

Yep, retro music is still the best.

The stage with the crabs is my favorite tune and I just don't like what they did with it. The Pyramid stage sounds good though.

I thought I'd hate the artstyle from screens and the one trailer I saw and bought for the widescreen retro, but goddamn this game is gorgeous. The soundtrack too. It's super fun to switch around the gfx and music in game.

My girlfriend and I got this once she realized she played the first Wonder Boy as a kid, an old ROM hack her dad got her.

Playing on Switch, anybody know how to adjust the screen size? I have some elements of the hud chopped in half because it's too big.

Haven't played a Monster Boy game before, but I'm glad I read all of the positive comments in this thread and bought it. The graphics (on the amazing Switch screen) are incredible and loving the gameplay so far!

Finished :D

Lovely remake overall and it was such a treat to revisit this gem with such a beautiful aesthetic update, not to mention the ease with which you can swap to the original visuals+music. It's pretty much the new gold standard for retro remakes on that front.

If I'm honest though, I think the game on Normal (which somewhat resembles the original game's difficulty) may be too frustrating for a lot of folks, it pushed my patience as I forgot how reliant WB3 is on grinding+getting specific equipment. Certain segments are gruellingly punishing if you're not set up the right way, and the backtracking needed in those cases can be pretty annoying.

As such, I'd probably recommend easy mode on the first run for most folks, all the while keeping an FAQ handy just in case. It's likely how I'll replay it in future runs, as the game doesn't particularly benefit from those frustrating elements. Normal (and hard, brrr) can always be saved for future playthroughs.

Still recommended then, but as I say just be aware this is a 1989 game with some of the obtuse trappings of a game from that era, and don't feel you're wimping out by going on easy. I don't want to speak for every player of course, and if those aspects don't bother you then maybe just go straight to normal.

Even with all that said I still had a big dumb smile on my face the whole time playing it :) Progressing throughout is usually immensely satisfying, and the platforming+combat is still very engaging.

I'm now 100% convinced I'll get Rayman Legends, 2D looks so good on this little screen.

My library keeps building, I now officially have a backlog.

Wait, how do you have multiple rows of game tiles on your dashboard? Mine is just one huge row.

I picked it up for Switch and I'm enjoying it, but it's super hard. Love the fact that it looks like I'm playing a cartoon, though.

The option unlocked at 12 games IIRC.

About games amount, I counted upcoming announced titles I'll buy this year, and realized I'll have more Switch games in 9 months than Wii U games during its whole lifetime.

The range on the mouse's sword is so bad that it's making me hate this game. The shitty controls for sticking/unsticking to tiles isn't helping either.

The ui thing is beyond annoying but it has nothing to do with the internal resolution of the games. Most of the games available are >720p when docked.

Back in topic, got it this morning and managed to play a bit undocked. Looks and plays fantastic, the Switch really is the perfect console for these games.

How's it compared to Wonder Boy in Monster World? I've played it recently, it's the only game from the series I've played and I liked it.

They are pretty similar. Dragon's Trap obviously has a little more in the way of traversal abilities with the different animal forms, but it should otherwise be pretty familiar for you.

It's similar. Personally wonderboy in monster world is my favourite and I definitely prefer it to this game. Still I feel it you like one you'll enjoy the other.

I remember this game being hard as a 5 year old in 1991. It's actually pretty easy, looking forward to beating this game after 26 years.

That game Wonder Boy in Monster World is ranked the lowest on my Monster World list because of the final boss fight.

Anyway, there's barely any story like NPC dialogue in this game compared to Monster World III aka Wonder Boy in Monster World. It's mainly explore different places with whatever transformation you have.

This is a shot-for-shot remake of a game made in 1989. Games were hard back then and we didn't have 17 button controllers (except on the Colecovision)
