Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Indicators for a Scorpio price point:

Comparing the die sizes is interesting as they are nearly the same: Scorpio 360mm^2 and X1 363mm^2. This could result in just the same cost of manufacturing and also could lead to a price nearer to the $399 mark.

on the other hand: the cooling solution, the bigger and faster hdd and the additional amount of ram pointing into the more expensive direction wich could lead more to a price of $449 or above.

As the other components are more of the same as with the Xbox One S my educated guess is MS can actually offer Scorpio at a price of $399 if they willing to take a loss for each unit or they go the safe route here and price the thing at not less than $449

Graphically, both versions will be identical. Performance [resolution, framerate, etc.] will be the only difference between the two versions.

And why on god's green earth would you ever assume that? Did you miss "grassgate" with GTAV? The expectation should be that it runs better, performs better, looks better and has more bells and whistles.

My bet is $499 to start. I'll be day one at that price. I'd even go up to $600. I did it before for the PS3. I did regret that one... should have waited.

Seems awesome and substantially more powerful the the Pro. I'll likely switch to it as my 3rd party console of choice but please, bring on the good games. New IPs in particular. The current roster, outside of Forza Horizon, does nothing for me.

I'm impressed with the specs (especially it not using Jaguar - I really thought it would still be a Jaguar variant), but... I might not get one even though I'm impressed.

Price will go a long way to dictate if I do or not (although I'd be willing to pay up to $499), but the biggest thing is GAMES. MS has been really lacking with must have games - my launch day X1 doesn't get much use anymore.

I'm looking forward to see what they have to show at E3 to decide if I'm going to bother upgrading or not. They will really need to impress with games though to make this something many feel like they should buy.

No, you're salty because you know DF said nothing particularly wrong or misleading in these articles but you just had to discredit them, so you're using something that happened years ago instead of judging the current information we have now.

Maybe I'm misreading, but I think you two are in the same page.

The way DF is talking about how MS engineered the system is really nice. It seems like MS took care and effort into it like the OG Xbox and Xbox 360. That's great for developers. The Xbox one felt rushed and it was it seems. I am glad this MS is back. This bodes well for Xbox Scorpio 2 or whatever in 2020 or 2021.

The fact that we are seeing forza run that well with more overhead for the gpu is a great sign.

That was my initially thought too but after writing down some point pro and contra $399 I ended up how I wrote it in my comment.

Funny cause MS has said Scorpio is targeted at the enthusiast gamer.

I'm interested to see their marketing strategy going forward or if, like Sony with the Pro, they don't even bother. Gotta say though, using DF for the reveal was an inspired move.

This holiday is already going to be nuts with all the mega multiplats, the OG consoles likely hitting that $199.99 sweet spot, and Switch + Mario.

It still bothers me that Scalebound went from "look we even have JRPGS!" In discussions to "that shit looked terrible no one wanted it"

Nah man, it always looked particularly rough. People who wanted it, such as myself, always kept hope alive, believing it would come together once it got more time in development, but that just wasn't happening. Ask anyone at E3 2016. I was telling anyone who would listen that it was the game I was most looking forward to seeing at Microsoft's Press Briefing. And once I finally saw it, it looked atrocious and boring. Huge disappointment.

VR solutions coming ?
development environment / API (DX12 now has Shader Model 6.0) ?
Scorpio Engines and the cloud ?
price ?

I don't think that's a hint to something that will be announced later. He's talking about the article covering the optimizations that they've done to get the most out of those numbers.

Rather than MS boasting how good the scorpio is and to risk all that being called PR talk, they let DF do the talking. The guy was genuinely excited about what he had seen, genius move by Ms

That's one of the highlights for me. The amount of time and energy that clearly went into making this thing as awesome as possible. You can almost sense the pride from the team even though we'll never know what most of them even look like lol.

The worst part was that SB was likely meant to bring in gamers that don't typically fall for MS's wheelhouse games. When the XB1 fanbase that doesn't buy those games (because they didn't have good access to them) spoke up about not wanting it... poof. Sad!

Wait, what?

It's using custom x86 cores, not Jaguar.

So i did a quick comparison ( animated png) to see just how much of an improvement 4k textures could bring, i knew 4k res would look super sharp when compared to 1080p. The difference is immediately noticeable, there is no like for like shot as you can't get this weather preset in Forza so this is all we have to go by. Textures are super sharp and the ground looks spectacular. This is a great console and i would have loved the ps4 pro to have native 4k textures.

Microsoft can release all the hardware they want but without a reason to buy Microsoft's hardware over the competition then it's nothing.
I for one am anticipating the ultimate Xbox 360. Even if some of the 360 games won't work on it.

That's half serious. If I get a Scorpio that's basically going to be reason number one.

I wonder if it's time for a drive-less SKU? Could be priced lower; not because the drive matters that much cost wise but because it locks people into the digital ecosystem completely.

It's certainly time for a controller-less SKU. I have plenty of XB1 controllers already, thank you. I'd rather not be forced to buy another.

I don't think an (optical) drive-less SKU is quite worth the hassle, so far, although that day grows ever closer. The fact that modern consoles can serve as UHD Blu Ray players for very little incremental cost is still fairly compelling.

I'd like to see a SSD SKU. Have a fast but smallish SSD built in, and let me add an external SSD or spinny drive for mass storage when needed. It would be nice if the XB OS would automagically cache any game loaded from a slow external drive onto a chunk of the smaller but faster drive. (Perhaps it should ask the user first.)

Clearly jaguar based at its core. Definitely jaguar, but apparently Microsoft went ahead and done some decent bit of customization to get the most out of the CPU apparently. But it's definitely Jaguar. Just clearly enhanced in some fashion.

Yep.

Okay, what does this mean? Was someone posing as a well known dev or something?
Someone posted as Matt Pettineo in response to another user. I can't find the post though.

Edit - Sorry, I think I got it wrong lol. Someone named Albert Pettineo.

Jaguars are x86 cores. You could say the same thing about PS4, it's not vanilla jaguar. They appear to be further customized jaguar cores. MS didn't develop a custom CPU architecture here.

MS likely had some "editorial influence" on DF's scoop.

It would be nice for Rockstar to let us know at least by E3 what they are doing with RDR2 for the Scorpio - as far as enhancements, etc.

It's the only reason I would buy one.

Lol. You know that won't happen. But I guess it creates a great excuse for you to say you'll buy one if (insert demand) is met. ;)

Going with how things have gone in the past with R* games. I think the Scorpio version will have better grass, trees and overall detail, as we know how important foliage and detail is to many of us on gaf. :p I mean it spawned pages of discussion in the official GTAV remaster thread and even a 13 page breakaway thread.

Digital Foundry: GTA 5's next-gen grass compared

Eurogamer said:
In our initial tests of Grand Theft Auto 5 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it seemed clear that both Sony and Microsoft platforms had been treated as equal citizens, with each edition appearing to receive the same level of remastering. However, screenshot comparisons appearing on the internet yesterday suggested that the game's biggest enhancement - a radical revamp of the great outdoors - was missing significant amounts of detail on Xbox One.

The evidence certainly looked compelling enough - as this head-to-head comparison from NeoGAF poster Xbudz demonstrates, the density of vegetation is clearly a cut above on the Sony platform. This is curious as our initial attempts to get some like-for-like comparisons revealed no appreciable difference at all.

However, the more locations we visited, the more it became clear that PlayStation 4 does possess the advantage in terms of detail level - it's just that the extent of the boost varies on a per-location level. In our first set of clips, we took the road north and explored the mountainside, finding no appreciable difference. However, spawning a chopper and flying onto the Vinewood hills, we discover plenty of areas where the results of the screenshot comparisons are borne out.

Moving on again into the Paleto Forest - an area where we would expect to see a rich array of greenery, our sample clips show that the compromise is limited to plants and grass. More imposing environmental detail, like tree density for example, seems to be untouched on Xbox One. The PS4 advantage here is much more subtle - a few bonus plants and small grassy areas. Overall, this is the kind of effect where the PS4's larger GPU and higher fill-rate come to the fore, and while it shouldn't impact any purchasing decision (Xbox One is hardly barren and featureless in the affected locations), it's nice to see that Rockstar has utilised the additional graphics power on tap in the Sony console.

Something about R* games and having the 'best' console version makes people on forums go crazy. And R* has never been afraid to make sure that if the extra power is there they'll put out the best version of the game as they can. Marketing deals or not.

As a bonus does anyone remember this classic thread.

Dat black crush. Good to see the guy in charge of the Xbox One pop is on Scorpio.

I thought it would be too, but it seems odd that they specify "Eight custom Jaguar cores" for the others, but specifically just put "x86" for Scorpio. We'll all know soon enough, but I can't see why they wouldn't put Jaguar there too.

Damn, if its going to be in the 500-600$ price range this is going to be incredible price/performance. It's going to put my 800$ 1080p/60fps PC to shame.

Pretty exciting stuff. If PC hardware doesn't catch up soon (come on vega), i think the trend that was shifting towards more PC gaming will turn back around. Native 4k 60 fps gaming at sub 600$? Count me in.

Although i will miss all those amazing PC game sales....
