Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Hmm launch is still a ways off and I'm more interested in how it performs across a wide range of games that also press the cpu. I expected a scaled down vega card to be honest but then I felt it was impossible given that vega is their high end and the rx 500 series releases this month.

Gonna be interesting to see how it will perform vs a ryzen/rx 500 budget combo though by end year

One thing I'm so glad is no longer happening is we have gotten back to reality where real hardware powers the games on not some magical cloud technology everyone was raving about 4 years ago.

I guess I still don't understand the hype. We have no indication that they're overhauling their internal game development.

Seems like a fun device for fans, but that's about it.

What can i say MS has shown us that they are the masters of X86 hardware and to use the same hardware as in PS4 the PLAYERS money was a TKO. For MS to put it's own IP in the SOC was a TKO. Think about it, Sony will have to pay more for a CPU to match MS DX12 IP that Sony can never use in it's hardware. PS5 with Ryzen next XBOX with Ryzen + DX12 IP. 6TF in a console will match a GTX 1080 in it's highest setting, and that's from only 40 CUs. Forza 7, FH4 and the next Halo all at 4K 60FPS. Take my MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

"If PC players are the master race then console players are there GOD!"

I like that saying!

6TF PC bad...
6TF Scorpio GOOD! 4K/60fps with 30-40% overhead left.

The King is back..for good. No competition left, all multi-plats, Scorp exclusives/1st p. and beyond will get crushed with performance.

We are still getting something with Crackdown 3 though ain't we? For online play.

Does anyone pay attention anymore?

The customization for the Jaguar was customized not so much like hardware but more-so like baked in software that takes a lot of the load off of it. This thing is gonna run just like a PC running DX12.

The DX12 takes a lot of the load off the CPU and uses it much much more efficiently than DX11.

As DF/Rich stated in the vid when he asked "Is it a Jaguar CPU?", then answered his own question by saying "Well, it is and it isn't", then stated "I never seen anything like it before"... Yes its based off the x86 but highly customized and built specifically to work with its surrounding components, with the DX12 taking 50% of the load off the CPU for much higher power output. When he compared this to the Ryzen performance speeds the Scorpio's core processor runs almost right up there with. MS customized the SH*T out this thing for optimal performance. And as he stated in the video i posted below, he says MS designed this to run just as a $1000 high end PC would. In this video he explains how much more powerful Scorpio is then PS4 Pro, and also answers you question about how MS took care of the Bottleneck issue.

I think we can say MS did their Homework here, i personally am very impressed.

Why would anyone pay attention to that /s

Can't wait,

Great summary.

Hope MS will release more exclusives though. Exclusives sell consoles to the masses, tech specs sell consoles to GAF and nerds :D

I literally just upgraded my PC to Kaby Lake i7....and RDR2 it's going to make me buy this thing.

Poor wallet.
Yes I will pay $400 to $500 to play a year earlier LOL.

I'm in the position of being invested in PlayStation at this point so for me I'm not interested in purchasing but yea...impressive. This looks good. Very good. Just bring games to e3. Lots of them. A very confident reveal so props to MS. Competition benefits all of us and I can't help but get excited at the announcement of hardware for my hobby. Great times to be a gamer

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but if someone could do me a solid and clarify: is Xbox Scorpio the final retail name?

I put the whole thing together, why not. Minimum size it's going to be, outlined in blue. Seems compact à la One S.

Cool pic! It does look quite compact, I'm guessing somewhere between One S and One phat. Hope it retains the more flashy outer design of the S though.

While it's not what everyone wanted, I think MS made a smart choice using the older Jaguar and Polaris tech. It will definitely keep cost down, so I expect it to be $399, which it really needs to be, as PS4 and Xbox One are cheap now and Sony might even have a price drop on the PS4 Pro by the end of the year.

They'd better just be keeping their powder dry for E3 in terms of interesting exclusives. If they've got nothing but the familiar Halo 6 / Forza / Gears of War routine under their hats, they're in trouble.
I read this alot but is it true? No it's Fox News and alternative facts.
Quantum break was a new IP and XB1 players did not buy it do to it being 720p with a 1080p frame buffer.
Recore was a new IP as well.
Sea of thieves was one as well.
Ryse was a new IP.

So to say that we have not had any new IP is wrong, but i get it your MAD that MS has and can give us Halo 7 / Forza / GOW at a nice pace all are 1 BILLION franchises and now that all games will look better on XB1X you have no where to go but " you have no new IP", i say to that how's that Killzone / ISS / Driveclub "the FORZA KILLER" / GT working out for you?

But it's ok for a UC4 / 5 / 6 /7 right?

I don't see any reason MS shouldn't be pursuing GAAS for their 1st party. The single player focused titles they have attempted this gen failed, and while units are down on titles like Halo and Gears we don't know how far down actual revenue streams are due to increased digital spend.

Despite what GAF and other forums think about the idea of GAAS they are what the larger broader demo enjoy. After all a game like GR Wildlands which was lambasted largely by forums and wasn't super well reviewed by enthusiast press is the best selling title of 2017

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I definitely prefer GAAS over single player focused titles. To clarify, I definitely enjoy a healthy mix of both! It's just that games like Gears 4 and Halo 5 give me solid reasons to revisit titles. Infamous Second Son, Uncharted 4, etc... are games that I loved to bits, but have been out of my mind since I beat them.

But 2.5" HDDs don't even saturate SATA II.

Their article says this:

yes and for me bandwith is the SATA interface
Xbox One Elite was already an SSHD and did not improve by a significant, or close to 50%, margin

7200RMP is also no huge improvement over 5.400 HDDs

Seems like a fun device for fans, but that's about it.

This x 1000. It is a bit like having an awesome upgraded camera but with only a few and shitty lenses, relying on third party lenses instead.

I guess Forza looks nice and you'll have to hope third party developers aren't as lazy as with the shitty PS4 Pro patches like with FFXV.

The specs and explanation of Leadbutter sounds nice but yeah, it could become another Betamax.

Do I need a 4K tv to experience the changes like PS4 pro?

From what I read Scorpio downsamples all games and that's fantastic news. Means that say RDR2 comes out, it may have aliasing and such on X1 but not on Scorpio and thanks to downsampling you will get those benefits on a Full HD TV too. But I assume it's more than just anti aliasing.

That's... not happening any time soon. SSD prices aren't falling fast enough and game sizes aren't exactly going down.

Are we expecting more details anytime soon? I've just been assuming that E3 will be the big reveal of the xbox, price, and release date right before they dive into games. Is there really much else that they can talk about before then?

DF said more videos and articles to come. I believe there will be one specifically about Forza 6 and who knows what articles. I assume the rest will be E3 yeah, even though Tom Warren from The Verge seemed to hint at an earlier reveal. But Richard from DF spoke of E3 in the video.

Why would anyone pay attention to that /s.

I think the issue there is that if it's relatively 'standard' dx12 stuff or driver level optimisations, it's the kind of thing - cpu draw call optimisation - that everyone has been working on and was already pretty lean afaik, at least in a console context. It's not clear how much 'more' this is, vs what's already in Polaris for example, or what it would mean overall for performance.

Hardware looks good. Let's see the game lineup.

Edit: waiting for the eventual Polygon comparisons and how resolution matters again.

Lol... Sony's turn to not do anything. They were already ahead, still are, and will continue to be ahead for the forseeable future.

Pretty much. Microsoft needs to bring the games if they want to make Sony sweat.

This is a good start though.

Microsoft can release all the hardware they want but without a reason to buy Microsoft's hardware over the competition then it's nothing.

All of this won't matter much. Tech fans love this kind of stuff but in reality, the basis for most games will still be the original PS4 and without any exclusives, it won't do better that PS4 Pro, which is apparently not doing amazing numbers but that was expected too.
Nice products for the enthusiast minority though.

If they don't bring serious games to E3 they're still screwed, most powerful console doesn't matter when there's no good new exclusives people want to play. I hope Xbox can turn it around honestly.

It's probably better to not have high expectations. I also really hope they will improve their first party efforts but don't expect miracles when they really don't have the studios for it. Just go in expecting the announced games and a new one from Moon Studios and hopefully a brand new IP for next year.

You can put the ugly person in the back seat and the sexy one who believes in open-relationships in the front seat, though.

I highly doubt this can run modern AAA games at native 4K.

Scorpio is designed to run Xbox One games at native 4K, with at least the same framerate of the Xbox One version.

That doesn't mean every Xbox One game will be patched to run at native 4K, but given that one of the most technically advanced Xbox One games, Forza 6, is already doing this as a demo, it's pretty safe to say Scorpio can do native 4K Xbox One games.

Didn't Sony recently state the PS4 Pro was doing well despite hardware shortages recently?
