some guy leaked FFXV's story six months ago | up: newer 4chan stuff as of Dec 9th

This stuff is pretty exciting because it gives us some insights into potential DLC scenarios. Like one DLC might feature the scrapped snow area (in fact, the concept art they've shown for the Prompto DLC suggests this), and another might feature the dark world version of Lestallum (I know Gladio's DLC is said to take place earlier, but maybe it can fast-forward to the World of Ruin halfway through and feature Adult Iris?).

Also, I recall reading that the dev team noticed there's demand for more Luna, and they were considering making a fourth DLC episode based on her. If so, they could reinstate the scrapped Tennebrae exploration and dungeon, as well as the flashback scenes between her and Noc that they couldn't fit.

I'd also love to see older Cindy. Put her in the Prompto DLC!

Hopefully the dlc does offer some meaningful story.

Gentiana's leaked Versus XIII design was so amazing.

It's probably just something the artist themselves threw together (especially because Iris looks the same age), but I wonder if this could have been it...

Vagrant Story remains my favorite game of all time. It's a shame that we probably won't see another game of its caliber from Square-Enix.

It was an exceptional game - the art, music, narrative, direction and translation all delivered spectacularly; and while the actual gameplay and level design (plus box puzzles) gets less unanimous praise it was still a very strong part of the overall package - though I wouldn't be opposed to a remaster that sped up the plethora of menus. Nier Automata could be a similar kind of 'dream team' production, if it manages to live up to the significant expectations being put on it.

The story if Nier is ambiguous though. The base story of Nier is actually really terrible. The story only really gets abasing when you best the game multiple times and read up on external material to understand the drakengard link.

I'm super excited about Automata, but I doubt the story will be any more straight forward.

Man, the Stella dying early thing is somewhat disappointing, but I would have loved to see how they played out that concept. If the rumor is legit, I can see why Stella would be removed. This is pure speculation on my part based on trailer, but the 2011 trailer showed that around the time Niffleheim attacked Lucis, Noctis was gaining power (to the point that he was wondering if he could use that power to defeat Niffleheim, but the gang told him that he isn't powerful yet).

That would mean he gained power sometime after meeting Stella, who told him about seeing Etro's light and how those who see it gain special power. If she was dead all along, could she have been working with Etro? What for? Stella's role was probably too tied to the FNC mythology for her to be reworked to FFXV.

Ultimately, if the rumor is true, both Nomura's and Tabata's visions were undermined by upper management meddling (the former with being never given a full staff to work with, and upper management deciding to put the project on PS4 instead of the PS3, causing a lot of time, (plus, putting Nomura on KH3/FF7r duties), and Tabata being pushed to complete a game in 3 years while having to create assets simply for promotional use, and not being given the freedom to create a new concept out of scratch).

Thank god Nier Automata, based on interviews, isn't really a top concern for upper management so the team still has a relatively big degree of freedom to play around with.

Barely 3 years.

UGH that Cindy and Iris is good stuff.

I guess after these leaks people should really stop blaming things on Tabata, it's pretty clear the man did an impossible job trying to make a good game that could satisfy the customers and SE management out of that developement mess. It's not his (or the dev team, or Nomura's) fault if the game feels rushed, clearly there was more developed than what we saw, it just got cut for time/budget reasons.
The only thing we can blame him for is having chosen a bad cutscene director and for not going through with all these Luna's cutscene, always go with your vision no matter how controversial it will turn out.

Well, i still enjoyed the game for what it is (will not go over a 7/10), and i hope they add the more they can with the DLCs and patches, i'm very open to come back in a couple of years for the complete experience.

But man, talk about the game with the most wasted potential ever.

Also, that Versus story premise sounds absolute garbage, but i guess the presentation would have been cool.

I just hope XVI is going to be a completely blank state, because if they gained back some of the world's spotlight on the saga, the next one has to be very good to keep the positivity. Oh, and it has to be soon-ish.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
If SE is kidnapping directors to make an FF game, they better move their asses to go nab Matsuno. Also go grab Ito from janitorial duties and get his ass as co-director.
lol Matsuno

They "This guy are sick" 'd the shit out of him and that was how we got Vaan, no?

Personally I really enjoyed the world they created, but in the grand scheme of things it feels pretty small. And did they ever give a reason for why Lucis is a backwoods hickville area with lots of old and decaying structures with old ass cars while Insomnia is all "modern" and shit? Felt slightly disconnected.

They're not protected by the walls of Insomnia, so they're still suffering the direct consequences of the war. It's more evident in Leide, with how fucked up everything is. You see tanks and Nif ships abandoned in the landscape, visit abandoned war bunkers, the place is a complete mess.

At the start of Chapter 2, there are NPCs conveniently placed around where you park the Regalia in Hammerhead that talk about the invasion, and one of the conversations has a person asking "do you think things will get much worse with the Empire now?", and the other answers "I don't think so, unlike those protected by the wall, we never stopped feeling the immediate threat of Niflheim" (probably not exactly in those words, I'm not playing in english).

There's also that scene in Kingsglaive where two guys talk to each other about something similar, but in the other direction, wondering if things will get better, and the other answers that nothing will change, no matter who's in charge.

Insomnia is the last remaining territory of Lucis who can stand strong against Niflheim, becuase of their magic wall powered by the Crystal. The beginning of Kingsglaive also shows Niflheim vastly overwhelming Lucis' forces, and retreating just to show their dominance. It was a matter of time, I don't think they had any chance of winning this war.

I think they vaguely mention the Lucis thing in a Cindy sidequest? I remember something about it being the result of the war, with only Insomnia being able to make technological advances due to its protection. Made sense.

Yeah, there's a lot of lore and world building from optional stuff in this game. I personally really like it. The world of Eos is very intriguing. And they went the better route of doing that through short radio bits and also short text stuff, not the typical WRPG book that you'll only invest the time reading if you're already really into the lore. With shorter bits of exposition, it serves the purpose of drawing people in better, imo.

At least for me, it worked. Definitely wasn't expecting to find so much attention to detail and interesting lore in this game.

I mean it was some dumb quest about some car product she was interested in because it had been impossible to find outside of the city for years or something, and I already don't remember much, but I think that was the implication.

I might be combining it with some other snippets tbf

That is correct, she says that ever since Insomnia isolated itself, it was really hard to find that stuff in the rest of Lucis, since they concentrate all of the technology there. I believe she mentions 30 years.

Yea a lot of us "spoiled " the game for ourselves aswell, cause square said it wasn't true

Square never said it wasn't true. An ex-employee, a Luminous programmer who also posted on GameFAQs, posted on GameFAQs that the rumors were false and people were just giving the guy attention. Why? I don't think anyone will ever know.

The most official comment on it was Tabata saying they haven't seen any leaks which got everything correct. Which technically is true.

Real talk: I don't really give a fuck about design changes or Stella/Luna or any of the story changes or whatever, in the end Versus didn't ship and XV did, what I do think was super disappointing is that Tabata couldn't keep Jun Akiyama on board as the event director for the cutscenes, especially since XV favors realtime cutscenes over CG. What a waste. Akiyama is the best cinematic director Square Enix ever had, so not using him in their flagship product is so dumb.

Yeah FFXV's cutscenes are extremely bland and dull looking, as if they were directed by a total amateur.

If you throw an "update new stuff 9th december" in the title, at least post it in the OT or something.

Just a part i found interesting

Was it expected from the team for the game to be so critically mixed

Actually, some members expected harshed results because there wasn't enough confidence that his vision for the game was shared by everyone. As far as I know, the game is succeeding expectations.

As far as I know, the next game from the team is not planned to use this engine.

Well the leak is 100% correct, yes - people think that the final boss changed or rather there is one form missing, but at the end
in the afterlife scene Ardyn suddenly starts to get demonized again which surely is meant by saying "monster" form
and you also have to press a button for the final hit. So it's still gameplay and a boss for that matter.

Read the supposed leaks, urgh.
If true, this just so ironically confirms the game was STILL rushed, which I felt in some parts anyway, despite it being 10 years already.. ha ha.

Really hope they add back the things that were cut, again assuming this is alll true, like
The other Ardyn form! I remember in the other leak it was said the final form was a demon adryn, which we never seen, so I guess it was that? The area in Tenebrae we could explore (Surprised it wasn't the full area, but I'll take it. More Ruin areas to explore too.

Starting to feel like this game could have reached much higher heights if it wasn't rushed near the end... That said I have loved the game and I believe I've 100%ed it this morning (At least to my knowledge..), just as said it doesn't feel complete. Hopefully they have like directors cut dlc or something, just want all of it, ha ha.

Reading all of that... feels like the project should have been canned all together when they switched to the PS4 platform.

Except for what they cut from the final game (the last boss, etc) the leak was really accurate.

PS. I'm talking about the story leak.

If you read the "give us a summary" bit, yeah, that's all pretty much in the final game. That was also however only part of the entire 4chan thread. Many questions that were answered in a definitive way were objectively wrong, and the poster kind of gave himself a catchall mulligan by saying 'things are still changing'.

On what's wrong and what wasn't, or even which topics, again, I'm not at liberty to discuss, so we'll leave it at that. You can take what I'm saying for what it's worth, since I'm just a person posting on an internet forum.

Talking about his story summary in there. Not the answered questions.

Yeah, well, going pretty far back down this response chain you were responding to when I said Tabata said none of the leaks were 100% correct. But we're playing at semantics and scope here now haha.

edit
98% correct then!

To be 100% clear (dem percentages) I'm not saying 'leaks are fake'. In fact, Shawn/L_Spiro posting on GameFAQs (if that really is him) at the time that they were fake is kind of irresponsible as an ex-employee, since it gave quite a significant number of people the courage to read through the posting and spoil themselves silly.

I'm confused. With a track record like Kingdom Hearts, why do people think Nomura would have had a better story?

I don't view Nomura highly; my issue with 15 is that Tabata is even worse than Nomura. But Vs13 as a project never excited me because aside from the 'contemporary fantasy' setting, there wasn't that much good going for it.

Honestly what Square Japan needs to do is get some decent writers.

I'm amazed people are surprised that Stella died, the original concept of Versus XIII was a spiritual sequel to Final Fantasy 7, with !Midgar and everything - of course they'd have a !Aerith, one of the most famous parts of FF7.

I'm confused. With a track record like Kingdom Hearts, why do people think Nomura would have had a better story?
Because: A: Stella is queen and no one can change that.
B: Edgelord Noctis is better than normal person Noctis.
C: Death, Gods, and Darkness are better than Stand by Me.
D: Overcomplication of story is better cause that means sequel and/or prequel.
E: Yakuza Regis is better than XV Regis.
F: Yakuza are cool.
G: It's Nomura. People will love it anyway.

At least that's what I've gathered over the last few years.
I'm kidding guys!

Saint Titanfall
The SmashBros leak from two years ago was also from 4chan
Bloodhound came from 4chan as well. It's not like 4chan isn't well known for leak. The same reason why it's "unreliable" is the same reason leaders use it. You can't track shit and a lot of Japanese people use the site.

Now that we think about it, the whole FF Versus XIII debacle happened because:

FFXIV 2.0 (specially because of this)
FFXIII

Square borrowed a lot of resources from Versus to fix FFXIV and end FFXIII, and what we have today are just the consequences of the mismanagement of Wada days.

Now that it's finally out and that the new CEO seems to make things right, we shouldn't see more trainwrecks

Noctis wasn't really an edgelord at all, though. The idea was specifically to go against what people would expect just by looking at his design.

I still think Tabata Noctis is a much more interesting character, but the idea wasn't to make him an edgelord at all. On the contrary, they tried so hard to get away from that anime stereotype that they just merged two different anime stereotypes and it was terrible, imo. There's the "acts cool but is actually shy" and "Noctis is kind of cocky", but they went waaaaay too extreme on the second one.

Noctis with Stella was fine, just a shy dude, but when it was just him and the main party (which would probably be a considerable amount of the game) he was insufferable. Just repeating "I'm strong!" over and over again, in different variations. Even in the 2013 trailer he kept this "I can handle it, I'll kick everyone's ass!" attitude.

It's kind of an insane thing to say, but I actually think the dialogue and characterization got better with the Dissidia writer.

People that worship directors are weird to me. I would like to make some examples:

Miyazaki,A team, and all that. Dark Souls 3 while still great is full of mistakes, the most notable being bonfires that kill the sense of exploration we had in DS1.

Kojima:don't act like MGS V was a mess in story because of Konami. It was totally his fault.

Now lets'talk about Lord Nomura:didn't Nomura co-directed KH:DDD?That was not a good game. This recent leak also shows Nomura's vision was not much better than what we have ingame now. It's hilarious to know that Stella was going to have even less story presence than Luna has.
The project started to be a mess story-wise just because of Nomura making the game story so convoluted and bloated it needed several games to be narrated.

y'all FFXIV fans need to stop being greedy with YoshiP and let us non-mmo FF fans have him.

If he's so good you'll let him go :)

What? No.

Besides, you'll get tired of him quick. He follows the same basic structure each patch cycle. Just ask for his writers instead. A lot of veteren 14 players are souring on him because he won't try anything new.

Being an amazing director doesn't mean they can't make mistakes :p

Dark Souls III did disappoint me in some ways, it's no Bloodborne, but I still firmly believe that Miyazaki is the best game designer in the industry. He's a genius.

And I have complete faith in Nomura with FFVII:R as well, he did deliver some of the best games of all time. I can't wait to play KH II FM+ at 60fps, hggggnnnnnn

EDIT: There's also Ueda, but I just got my copy of The Last Guardian, and I'll probably wait until christmas to play it. Feels like a perfect christmas morning game :D

Killing Stella early on in the game doesn't stop her from being important after her death.
Even Luna gets at least one scene after her death. Luna's death was also the least problematic thing about her character.
