Aang is just jealous he had to ride around on that stinky sky bison instead of cruising around in a sweet car!

avatar the last airbender is a rare thing. there's so much love poured into it in almost every respect.

the legend of korra is a mad dash to recapture that glory. unfortunately, it was really fucked over by nickelodeon's scheduling, resulting in the first two seasons being initially ordered one at a time, turning each one into a series that effectively ends each series. seasons 3 and 4 are better in that they can spend more time on character and motivation. i maintain that only season 2 is truly bad. season 4 is a bit boring, but ends in a satisfying way. i actually really appreciate how korra develops too, intentional or not.

Watched it ~3 years ago and still can't believe something with quality of that caliber was created. Nearly everything about the show was perfect. I would've just flat out died had this been airing when I was a kid. I was into DBZ as a kid and I would've dropped that for TLA in a heartbeat.

Sadly Korra doesn't get anywhere near on the same level. Animation, music, and art is superior, but the writing simply isn't there. It should've stayed the 13-episode miniseries it was originally meant to be because the attempt at making a full-fledged series out of it failed pretty badly (with the exception of S3).

I agree with Korea's scheduling really hurting the show. I thought season was great despite some bland characters and the love story, then the finale happened. While the finale still gave us some good moments,
the boat explosion
, it really made the season come across as a rush job.

I never watched season 2 because I heard it had similar problems. As I mentioned earlier though, this thread has inspired me to start TLA again, and I plan on viewing Korra afterwards.

Just started watching this today, currently on Episode 11 ("The Great Divide")

The characters and fighting is pretty entertaining so far, but not really seeing what makes it so amazing

I did it find funny that I instantly recognized Robin's voice coming from the tour guide in Great Divide

The Great Divide is universally considered (even by the show itself) to be the series' worst episode. I would say the meat of the show is in the latter part of season 1 and season 2, just carry on and if you've watched half of season 2 and still don't like it you can drop it.

The beginning of season 1 have a lot of episodes that seem like "filler" but actually set the background for later (and set up characters for later). Except The Great Divide, that's just pointless.

Season 1 is good, but it's not on the same level as Seasons 2 and 3. Once a certain character gets introduced in Season 2, this show goes from just "good" to amazing, IMO.

Also, I think The Great Divide is often considered the worst episode in the show's entire run, lol.

Well, I meant in general up to this point, not the particular episode. But the characters and fighting/animations have been strong. Definitely interested to see how the seasons improve

You are at exactly the point where the series delves deeper and becomes more engaging. The Storm is when the storytelling and the narrative construction gets good.

Going from The Great Divide to The Storm and The Blue Spirit...damn, if the rest of the series is like that, I'm in. Those two were great

Once you're beyond The Great Divide, the show is almost pure brilliance. The Storm is the turning point.

(The Great Divide is kind of terrible, as Avatar episodes go)

God, I love this show. Probably in my all time top five.

Season 2 is probably some of the best western tv animation/cartoons you'll Zuko's story arc is particularly great throughout the entire series.

"Come on strike me, strike me, you've never held back before. Now I can take it and give it back" As Zuko on a cliff screaming to a storm which is a proxy for life and his entire existence as it's almost never pulled any punches towards him.

You know it's funny - I watched all three books of TLA in a vacuum based on a friends recommendation, and loved the Great Divide...and I didn't know it was hated until I visited some IGN articles on best TLA episodes and signed up for GAF lol. I loved the end too haha it made me chuckle at the that he made it all up lool since I was legit convinced all the way through.

Season 1 was great but not amazing due to the ending.
Season 3 was great and *not* shit.
Season 3 is considerably better than the first season.

I don't know guys...whilst season 3 wasn't as bad as season 2 or 4, it still did nothing for me to be honest. Very forgettable and I'm talking about difference between shite and meh lol. It had a few bright spots, yes unlike season 2 and 4 which had none, but still, didn't enjoy it on the whole.

I know it's not a popular opinion but boy did Korra sour me after season 1 and just kept on disappointing heh. Also gotta say I really like the end of season 1 -- what didn't you like about it Cris?

The Storm and The Blue Spirit are probably my favorite episodes in S1 - and yes, the series gets better from that point onwards. The ending to S1 is quite epic and then S2 just raises the bar except for maybe one or two episodes that aren't as good as the rest (but nothing groanworthy, IMHO).

when given proper time, the creative team behind Korra, Avatar, and Voltron have proven themselves. I have no doubt that the quality of Korra would have been consistent throughout if the team had been given the go-ahead to run for four seasons of Korra from the start.
granted, I still think Korra is pretty top-tier. it's just got some uneven spots.

Avatar the Last Airbender was lightning in a bottle for western animation. The style, visuals, and writing are absolutely brilliant.

Avatar is so awesome. When I hear avatar get mentioned in a conversation I get really excited until I realize they're talking about the movie. It's funny how Avatar can mean something completely different to different people.

So if I like Avatar I should give Voltron a shot, is what I'm hearing?

Halfway through Season 2 ("The Library") now, yeah this show is great. It reminds me of the young adult series I used to read before everything went "rebel against the future dystopia". Likable characters, great action, and an overraching adventure that doesnt sugarcoat things and not afraid to touch on larger mature themes and storylines

Yup. You're in peak Last Airbender land. Enjoy yourself, dude.

I think it's time for another rewatch.

Shit man, I'm thinking the same thing. I only discovered it about 4 years ago, but I've probably seen the whole thing 3 x over so far. Periodically when I don't have anything to watch I will just binge on this and do all three seasons in about a week.

When you get the itch for the show, you go from the top and don't stop until it's over. I do it once a year.

Has the time for an legit Avatar RPG passed? Series would be perfect for some CRPG-style game, four-person party with a member and skill tree for each element, the different regions and cities and cultures. etc. Like Jade Empire meets Divinity

Absolutely amazing show. I'm getting chills from reading through key moments in this thread. I've probably watched the show 5+ times through. Time for more.

One of my dreams is that Obsidian ends up doing a CRPG set in that world. It's impossible, but a man can dream... ;_;

Does this show have a OST?

I just got done watching through ATLA and ATLoK in July. Amazing series. LoK isn't as good as TLA but only by a few points. This is a really good series and surprising considering it came from Nickelodeon. How they screwed up the movie when everything was literally right there for them is baffling. Hope the try again.

Those two were great

Probably. But yeah, there really seems like there'd be a lot of great material for world building there. Would be a lot of fun.

1. Korra can Airbend for the first time (after Amon takes her bending) for no logical reason. 2. Aang comes in and fixes everything out of nowhere (because the creators thought they were only getting one season).

My girlfriend introduced me to the series. Its one of her all-time favorites and I really enjoyed it throughout as well.

We watched Korra after that as well. That was kind of frustrating because you could clearly see that they had all the pieces to be better than peak TLA (which you see hints of in its third season) but they never could fully deliver.

I quit Korra after season one, just couldn't go back.
It peaked at When Extreme Meet, only downhill from there.
I was copping pleas and trying to explain stuff away to my friend while watching the finale live, I was in denial of how bad it was.

If Korra S1 hadn't crammed a second massive deus ex machina into it's ending, I think I would've been a lot kinder to the show. It had a perfectly fine ending without pushing the "character reset" button, and there's nothing in S2 that actually needed that button to be pushed. S2 would've probably benefited from the character growth opportunity that an S1 change to the status quo would have provided (and S2 needed all the help it could get).

It's like, they had a perfectly mature ending laid out for them (and after all the other stumbles in S1, it would've been nice if they at least stuck the landing). But then they had to cram a forced happy ending into it at the last minute, because... they got picked up for a season two? Huh? How does that work? The only thing I can come up with is that Mike and Bryan already knew how to write for Korra's character (which is to say, badly), and they didn't know how to write for a changed, growing Korra, so it was easier for them to just hit the reset button.

I decided to check out the Blue Spirit scene from the movie-that-must-not-be-named and it's actually impressive how it completely ruined what was such an awesome chapter in the show. Saying it's a shadow of greatness would be too kind

From the outfit and mask that looks like it's from a bad Halloween costume to the attempt to directly copy scenes from the episodes but failing completely in copying what made them effective, to Aang & Spirit v guards fight/escape being so boring and uninteresting...

It's funny how I never cared about the movie or show before, but now that I'm all into the show, seeing just that one scene tells me everything I need to know about how bad the movie is
