Fictional Podcasts |OT| - "You mean it isn't real?"

The last episode of The Black Tapes was really stretching it for me.
Confusing the geo location data from a mountain in Turkey with the IP address from your studio? Really?
Seems like a total ass-pull to me, unless I didn't understand it correctly (which is absolutely possible, since I listened to the episode at the gym).

No, that's how I understood it as well and I agree it's stretching it a bit much. I'd kind of like to go back to investigating Black Tape cases though the central thread seems to be the big thing right now.

Spoiler tags. FFS, I have 7000 episodes in my backlog; I can't be caught up on everything and that is something I would have preferred not knowing.

😞😧

Holy fucking shit! I'm so sorry! For some reason I didn't even think about that and I usually always try to. Man, again, I'm super sorry.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
i gotta say, TBT S2 was a real disappointment. i wish they stuck with anthology style story telling that had genuinely creepy moments. it's become too serialized and i don't really care that much.

Yeah, I lost interest after the first few shows of S2. Magnus Archives, NoSleep, and Knifepoint are the places for good podcast horror

I forgive you. 🙂

There's a new horror podcast that's just starting up that was pretty good. I'll try to find it again.

But if you want some good horror, I would also suggest Scott Sigler's podcasts. Infected and Ancestor are great.

He does podcasts? He's one of my favorite authors; Ancestor and the Infected trilogy were so damn good and fucked up

Are there any more podcasts like The Incomparable Radio Theater? I really liked the 50s fictional radio story vibe they were going for and would love more.

Thank you. It really bummed me out, because I also hate getting spoiled, even if it's something I'm not going to watch/listen/play in a while. I'm somehow always able to remember that spoiler.

TONS. He podcasts lots of his books; Alive, Infected, GFL. Some of his podcasts aren't even books yet. Honestly, you're missing out not having heard them. His production is impressively top tier.

You want to check out Thrilling Adventure Hour. It's basically what Incomparable Radio Theater is trying to be as good as. A second choice would be Tales of the Extraordinary. For a not quiet as humorous take, there's Prometheus Radio Theatre, Gypsy Audio, and Decoder Ring Theatre, though Gypsy Audio is very hit and miss. I also want to recommend to you both Chatterbox Audio Theater. Lastly, there's also Seminar, which is a Canterbury-esque anthology. There are a few more, but I haven't listened to them yet and so won't recommend.

Thank you for the recommendations. I appreciate what TAH is doing and the ever changing cast seems to be pretty amazing, but the live recorded format really isn't for me. The audience always pulls me out and there's obviously less production value in terms of effects and the such. So in that regard, I really prefer TIRT.

Does anyone listen to The Mysterious Secrets of Uncle Bertie's Botanarium? It's not super accessible since it's only available through Howl but damn, it's some hysterical classical satire from Jemaine Clement in the vein of Jonathan Swift and a compelling story in its own right.

The first episode of The Deep Vault is pretty good. I'll definitely keep listening. I really liked limited podcast runs like this (like The Message last year which was great).

Limetown was fucking amazing! I completely loved the atmosphere but the season ended so fast. Now I'm listening to TANIS and I'm hooked! Went through the whole first season in a day. I already had listened to We're Alive and that was also an awesome podcast. I tried listening to King Falls AM but the stories were a bit too short and tacky for my tastes.

The podcast I was thinking of is Paralyzed by Sharkdroppers. It's basically set up like a teen slasher movie.
It's literally set in a cabin in the woods.

EDIT: I am REALLY digging this show, guys.

Kings Fall AM is mostly a buddy comedy show that occasionally has stories. Go into with that view instead of thinking of it as a heavy serialized podcast and it gets better. Best use of bleeping in a podcast on the internet too. The old foul mouthed fisherman gets me every time.

Kings Fall AM is absolutely hilarious and does develop several continuous storylines overtime. It's what I thought Night Vale would be when I heard the description of Night Vale but I didn't end up liking Night Vale and love Kings Fall AM, so take that for what you will.

Is there anything like Night Vale or Kings Fall but eerie? I love those premises of the town radio and news in a place where weird otherworldly things are happening, but I'd much prefer if they were actually creepy rather than going for humor or surrealism

Almost everyone is going the comedy route. Closest thing is SAYER

Unfortunately I haven't come across anything like what you're describing. Everything that goes for creepy is either narrator storytelling (Lore, Magnus Archives), first person (The Black Tapes), or poorly constricted "real accounts"shows(Art Bell-esque stuff).

As soon as I'm done with TANIS I will give it another go to see if I like it a bit more. To be fair, I only listened to like 4 episodes.

Sayer is cool. It has an element of dark Glados-esque humor but the sci-fi aspects are played straight enough.

And another for the list. Personally, I didn't finish the first episode; the acting got bad after halfway through IMO

The Bridge, currently on episode 3

Welcome to the Transcontinental Bridge!

It's an alternate 2016, and Watchtower 10 sits in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, keeping lonely watch over the Transcontinental Bridge. Each watchtower sits hundreds of feet away from the Bridge, broadcasting regular traffic reports to ensure that proper safety precautions are taken. These lighthouses (for cars) are filled with a carefully selected (and very capable) crew.

Watchtower 10's necessary personnel happen to be: a generalist DJ who spends her free time relaying folklore from abandoned parts of the Bridge, her supervisor (who's only there because he lost a bet), an unfailingly optimistic Bridge Travel Agent, and a groundskeeper who has a thing for romantic comedies.

Unbeknownst to the general public (but totally knownst to each watchtower's crew), these stations also hold a secret that could potentially destroy the world...or save it

Was just wondering this. Are there any series that sound like audio logs (ie Bioshock or Dead Space)? That could work well in podcast form. Like the daily transmissions from a survivor, or a collection of audio recordings from some doomed dystopia?

Also, anything with a spy thriller bent? Like the podcast are the recorded interrogations of a captured agents, or the conversations of handler and agent? Stuff like that?

Archive 81, Magnus Archive (you silly), Help Me, Wolf 359, Scotch

Not that I know of. The closest thing I've heard is Lara Bond.

The first episode of The Deep Vault was great. They went full audio play, very cool step up on production from Archive 81. Great cast of voice actors in it too.

MarsCorp is freaking hilarious. The Bunker was sort of hit and miss for me, but this is gold. If you like Wooden Overcoats, Better Off Ted, or The Office, I think this will be up your alley.

The Bridge is great.

Trying Tanis and I find both Nic and the hacker lady quite annoying. Especially the hacker.

I'm not a big fan of using real life deaths for their fictional entertainment too.

Also why does basically every major woman in both Tanis and The Black Tapes have to have at least one out of place line of dialog about how they had a relationship with someone mentioned or think some guy is attractive?

But works of fiction have been doing that all the time for decades. It's nothing new

Do you have the same when a sci-fi or thriller movie reveals that some conspiracy or cabal whatnot was behind real-world events?

Well it bothers me. It's not a breaker. Like I won't stop listening just for that. But it bothers me. For the record, I said the same thing about Serial, using a recent(-ish) death for entertainment purposes (non-fiction though). Feels exploitative.

Real world events being interpreted in fantastical ways is one thing. Or a long passed death. But it bothers me when its more recent history and surviving friends/family could very well stumble upon the podcast.

Are Tanis and The Black Tapes supposed to be the same universe? Nic seems like such an expert on stuff on The Black Tapes but he seems so clueless on Tanis. He's like a totally different person.

They are the same universe. Setting aside the necessity of portrayal for plot purposes, he's taking a different role in being the reporter on Tanis rather than Producer.

So in TBT he's fact checking and researching while Alex is traveling and conducting interviews and addionally editing the final product, While on Tanks he's chasing leads and conducting interviews etc... Like Alex so he's not doing the fact checking and research.

Thanks. That makes sense.

Okay, Sayer Ep6 just bumped the series up to one of my favorites. I already liked the show a lot, but "A Dreamless Sleep" was both a really clever tangent from the main narrative and a nice bit of world-building.

I started with The Magnus Archives a couple of days ago and it's pretty good. I only got bored during the Piper episode, but the rest is fun. Just started with episode 10. Which ones are considered the best?

E: I'm also considering dropping The Black Tapes, because I don't feel like it's going anywhere and the last ass-pull really soured me on the show. I fear the same for Tanis.

E2: Ohhhh, I love that depiction of a vampire. Really, really good.

I think my favorite fictional podcast is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. If you love the series, I highly recommend it. Great stuff (although I'm only halfway through it).

My favorites so far have been Across The Street, Thrown Away, and The Man Upstairs
