The robust character creation tool in The Sims 4 is getting even more flexible. Today developer Maxis announced that it's expanding the gender customization options in the game's "create-a-sim" mode, opening up a range of new choices for players. If you want your male character to wear high heels and jewelry, or to dress your new female sim in a slick three-piece suit with close-cropped hair, now you can do that. "For the first time, you'll be able to customize your sims without the gender boundaries previously set in place," the developer says.

The update has been a year in the making, and involved reworking hundreds of pieces of previously gender-specific content, from clothing and hairstyles to tone of voice and walking animations. “The update gives players more ways to reflect the world around them, or in their imaginations, creating the sims and the stories they want,” says lead producer Lyndsay Pearson.

The changes impact content not just from the base game, but also the plethora of expansions and add-ons, as well. Since The Sims 4 first launched in September 2014, the life sim has seen two major expansion packs, plus more than half a dozen add-on packs that introduced new items and features. In total the new update makes more than 700 pieces of in-game content available to both genders

Pretty slick. tbh I've only really heard bad things about Sims 4 as far as actual gameplay and stuff goes, but regardless, stuff like this should be praised!

So, Kanji can wear now female clothes? :O

The removal of physique restrictions is really great, that's something more games need to do. There's so many different bodytypes out there in the world and video games have been historically terrible at representing that.

Jesus yes. Their are times when I REALLY want to just swap clothes around cause one thing just looks better but i cant. Nice that they are finally letting you do it.

The Sims 4 is and always has been a really good game, and has only gotten better with DLC as well as a fairly decent amount of free updates.

Great, I always installed mods to allow me to do this in the other games.

The gender restrictions never made much sense when the male clothing was almost always gender neutral anyway.

It didn't have much content / features at launch which upset people, but I think it's a great game now.

Yeah I have to say the last few DLC have been really good and the amount of sales they have had lets me pick and choose pretty easy. Get Together's club system is lovely.

That's awesome. Good on them.

Haven't played Sims 4 in forever, but this'll be a good excuse to fire it up.

Yup. It got a lot of heat early on 'cause you couldn't free-roam the neighborhoods in real time (only loading screens), but that never bothered me.

The base game was fantastic from day one. Incredible engine that runs smooth as butter. Great, emotive art direction. Multitasking was a godsend.

Still think it's the best Sims to date by a wide margin.

I totally forgot The Sims 4 happened. For some reason I was convinced EA were still bolting on content to 3.

Either way, neat feature.

Was it always good? I heard basically what artsi said, that it was missing a lot of features and content in the beginning, which really soured me on buying it.

But if it's gotten better, then I may take a second look at it. TS2 and 3 are two of my favorite games of all time.

You know, for some reason I was thinking you could already do this in 4. Maybe I was just used to the plethora of mods I had setup over the series' lifetime?

Either way, guess that's neat. I didn't think Sims 4 was still being widely played.

I mean in fairness that happened to every Sims game. There would be a ton of expansions adding a lot of stuff, then the new "base" version would come out (Sims 2) and while it would add new features, a lot of the previous expansion stuff wouldn't make it over. Then we'd get more expansions, a new base (3) and onwards.

I think 4's problem was they ran out of new features to throw in, so the disparity between the old fully decked out version versus the new "base" was too big for most people to accept. When (if?) they ever make a Sims 5, we'll probably go through this same song and dance again.

Hey, this is superb. Was wondering if somebody would try to make a mod for this, but since Maxis added it themselves, it is even better.

Well, it's not even that. Sims 4 was missing stuff even the first Sims had, such as swimming pools. Something that was a staple in every base game until 4.

There were some other things missing as well that the first game had but 4 didn't. The missing features/content in comparison to the first Sims base game just kept piling and piling and turning people off of it.

I think the real disparity was how much was cut from the basic implementation of the neighborhood in TS3 to TS4. From having a completely open living world back to there just essentially being plots again like 2, minus features like swimming pools and burglars.

TS2 and TS3 rolled a lot of features from the expansions into the base games (such as community lots and vehicles) while still being lesser than the complete package from the last entry, and that wasn't that big an issue then. TS4 just seems like a very reduced package in comparison.

The update has been a year in the making.
One year to simply remove a check if the character you want to apply that hairdo or piece of clothing to, is male or female.
Progress!

Oh, this is pretty neat! Still feel bad that I dropped off of 4 part of the way through raising my first family in it; I wanted to see more of it. Maybe I'll jump back in at some point.

And rework all the outfits to fit both styles of character being made, but ya know, don't read all the OP will you.

Woo! In a game like The Sims where you're customizing so many aspects of your character, it's hard to believe this wasn't implemented sooner. I'm glad it's coming now, though.

Huh, that's pretty cool. I should really try to get back into Sims 4 now that expansions and DLC have fleshed out some of the weaker bits. Despite the rocky launch and missing features, a lot of the new additions to the game were really good.

This is really neat, but actually expected

As much hate as EA gets sometimes, they've always been very progressive

And like others in this thread, I forgot The Sims 4 existed lol

Is it better now, content wise?

Okay, this makes up for toddlers. I like some of the male hairstyles better on female characters. It is great that I can now do this without mods. Same with creating male characters with feminine clothing.

It's better than it was before due to various updates. I'm hoping we get a new expansion soon.

The Sims has been a staggeringly progressive franchise.

Kudos to them.

I feel like The Sims took some big steps backwards with Sims 4. Previous games gave far more control over user generated content than Sims 4 did, including less restrictions in character customization. EA really wanted to monetize the hell out of DLC by taking away user generated content.

They support LGBT rights (including sponsoring parades).

Man, i know this is a good thing, for a company to support LGBTA rights, yet, there is something sinister about seeing the EA logo there, it's like i want to scream at the parade people "NO YOU FOOLS! IT'S A TRAP! DON'T TRUST EA!"

This is soooo nice! It's been talked about a lot but it was still surprising to suddenly see it actually happen. Now I have to remake a bunch of the families in my world :D

Coming from The Sims 3 + expansions, how much will I feel is missing? D:

I went from a complete Sims 3 game (and I mean complete, everything from the store and all that stuff) and the only thing I really miss is the Create a Style-thing. Lots of stuff I want to recolor but can't. Not a huge issue tho since the replacement ideas I get turn out great too, but I would love some more colors for doors for example. Thought I would miss the "open world" that made 3 the best Sims for me (before 4) but 4 runs soooo much smoother and I'm not bothered at all by the short loading screens.
I look forward to seeing more expansions because I love pets, seasons and such things, but I don't "miss" them like I thought I would. Current Sims 4 is great as is.
Toddlers would have been nice but... I dunno. I like to play with adults most anyway.
