Nvidia plans to lock Game Ready drivers behind GeForce Experience registration

I do agree though paying got drivers would be a step to far even for most consumers however I am just not seeing their logic in the decision to lock drivers behind this service which makes me wonder, is their a hidden motive to it?

To collect information, which is marketable. I'll have to read over the TOS but I'm sure there's some part in there where they collect information about the games you use with Experience. It's not really that shocking in this day and age, sad as that is, and raising discussion like this is an important way to stop it from happening.

But it is a slippery slope argument that people will ever pay for driver updates because there's nothing to predict how that will go, or if it will ever go that way. Like you say, it's most likely a step too far. Look at how quickly Bethesda's paid mods exploded in their faces.

Plenty of people don't pay for DLC because they disagree with the practice. Always online is part of a changing infrastructure on the internet landscape where bandwidth caps are becoming limited and speeds are increasing, but not every game is always online and most games have offline modes. They're not things that everyone has adopted, and are still far from the norm.

it is the year 2020

you turn on your pc computer running on MICROSOFT WINDOWS 13
you renew your OS annual subscription
your computer is powered by an NVIDIA GPU because they're the only manufacturer left
you install your third NVIDIA GPU upgrade with two remaining OS limited upgrades left
you download your latest GAMEREADY BETA drivers through GEFORCE EXPERIENCE for maximum performance
hairworks and physx are forced on in every game for maximum NVIDIA experience
you boot up and log into the steam user interface
you start preloading half life 3 f2p early access open world multiplayer with crafting
you bide time by selecting assassin's creed 37
you put in your uplay login
you enter your pre-order bonus goodies code rewarded exclusively at GAMESTOP
you connect your facebook account for maximum social networking features (this is an mmo after all)
you smile at this new golden age of pc gaming

*saving post for 2020. Get ready to eat crow. Half-Life 3 will not be an open world f2p. It'll be a Moba. Officially launching with Steam Controller 1.5 with Sony's patented spore control technology for the ultimate input experience.

All other predictions will be right though.

Isn't this basically because DX12 was about to make their driver no better than AMDs? So trying to lock in their market share while they have a bigger share.

This REALLY pisses me off because the "Geforce experience" has ALWAYS Given me problems, it constantly freezes up and crashes all the damn time, I've freaking reformated , tried multiple drivers, etc and it still does it.

So screw that crap.

This is simply untrue. AMD isn't NVIDIA's greatest threat, Intel is. Yes, that LOLIntegratedGraphics Intel which seems to be doing everything but CPU development.

I mean, Skylake GPU is on par with curgen consoles. And it will only get stronger with each CPU gen.

Man just when I build a new rig around SLI.

First poor performance with DX12 and now this crap. It doesn't help that Experience is buggy and worthless now it's required? Lame.

Agreed.

I mean, I really don't have an issue with this as I have been using GFE solely for driver updates for a while now. Paying extra would cross a hard line for me. I'm not going to suddenly alter that view because they lock their drivers to GFE. I'll install an AMD card while gagging if I have to, but I won't pay for drivers.

That's not to say my experience trumps others so if it pisses people off then they should be pissed. Clearly people hate GFE so regardless of how I feel I hope Nvidia fixes this.

If it were anyone but Nvidia I'd be saying that this shit is so stupid that they're probably just putting it out there to see how people will react, to measure the backlash and see if it's worth the trouble.
but it's Nvidia and they ain't changing for nobody. This shit is fucking dumb

Slippery slope crap? Do you think Nvidia aren't above this and consumers Aren't stupid enough to justify ridiculous things like this?

Years ago people said the same thing about how always online games would never be and day one DLC wouldn't happen but look where we are...and people pay out the ass for it as well.

People will always find ways to justify things like this, people are blind when it comes to brand loyalty sometimes.

Of course there is. They might only lock them behind a paywall for a week or two, like demos on Xbox Live. People managed to justify that to themselves so they'll do the same thing here. They have a very undesirable subscription service and you can bet your ass they'll want to add more "value" to that.

Was going to upgrade my graphics card when the next wave of cards came out, starting to lean towards AMD more and more. :/

Fuck off, Nvidia. This is stupid and ya'll should be ashamed that it made it this far in the chain and actually got pushed through.

Could they just make GeForce experience not auto update game ready drivers?

I have a GeForce account so not a nig deal I suppose but it does seem weird. Never hava installed GeForce experience.

I really don't understand the need to register an account.

Only getting GameReady drivers if you have GeForce Experience installed? Fine. That's how I update my drivers today anyway. Having fewer updates being pushed to GeForce.com and WU is okay as well since many people just wait until a new driver is updated for them anyway, and don't go looking for GameReady drivers.

But really, why do I now need to create an account for this? Just have it be opt-in for GFE, but I really don't want to create an account.

The decisions that Nvidia makes is baffling sometimes. It sucks that I like their GPU's, but I really hate many of the decisions they make.

How shitty this is.

Hopefully they'll see the INCREDIBLY huge outpouring of doubt and concern and then just decide to save themselves some work and keep everything the way it is.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Their update program is also bugged and a lot of users get "cannot connect to NVIDIA" errors, so they won't be able to update their drivers at all.

I fail to see how this will lock anything anywhere.

I also fail to see how AMD's driver becoming on par with NV's performance wise in CPU limited scenarios will hurt NV much. This is something which isn't happen very often otherwise AMD's h/w would simply be useless all this time.

Well, I guess that's what you get for "Personally I'm on NVidia but I really wish AMD will do better in the future"

Expect more of this once AMD has gone down the shitter once and for all :(

AMD's Gaming Evolved app is hardly better than GFE.

Personally I have absolutely no problems with this so called "bloated piece of shit" that so many here hate. It notifies me when there's a driver available and Shadowplay works great. I don't use it for anything else and it never bothers me at all.

There was one time I couldn't update it because it froze while searching for updates, but apart from that I have never had a single problem with any updates. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That said, it is silly to lock driver updates behind it for people that do not care for Shadowplay and just want to download their drivers manually.

What a nice monster people have created, if you occasionally tossed a bone to the underdog we wouldn't be force fed shit through a near nvidia hegemony.

hacked Nvidia drivers will be around still, I'm sure. This is a bit inconvenient, but so's life, the universe, and everything.

I'm not going to buy a worse GPU just to support the manufacturer with the smaller market share (and even if I bought 100 cards it wouldn't make a difference anyway). I've zero brand loyalty, but for my last upgrade Nvidia was better. And if the rumors about Pascal are true, I might be in for a repeat.
