Nvidia plans to lock Game Ready drivers behind GeForce Experience registration

I use GFE all the time for shadow play so it's not like I won't be doing this. What possible reason could they have for doing this? Shitty move Nvidia. I'm sure you'll be able to get the most updated drivers from a 3rd party but you shouldn't have to and Nvidia are some assholes for forcing people's hand that don't want to use GFE.

I hate nVidia software. The Experience is useless to me and only serves to hurt performance while the driver panel itself has always run horribly on every machine I've built with an nVidia card. Why is it still so laggy? I hate using it.

I can't even get angry anymore. I've been updating through experience for a while now then shutting it down after drivers update. Sucks that they are forcing it on people now.

Next step locking game ready drivers to card registration. So that only the original owner can get the game ready drivers.

This is dumb, I signed in with my Google account a while ago and it was basically no trouble, but I don't get why it's necessary at all. Maybe they should tell us.

It's the way they search all your drives for your installed games on every launch, it's so stupid, you can disable it by unticking 'Show only programs installed on this computer' in 3D settings though. NVIDIA's software and ecosystem is why I choose them over AMD, but I'm not going to say their general purpose desktop software is of good quality, it's actually pretty bad with a few exceptions (I think ShadowPlay has been good, reliable and made reasonable progress over time).

Does this mean we have to have GFE installed or is this a one-time registration? Sorry can't read the whole article right now.

It'll reduce headaches for casual and enthusiast gamers......how?

I mean I don't care I already registered but seriously, don't just state something without backing it up.

I think by reducing the frequent updates/downloads and notices about it.

More annoying than the "Experience".

Fixing my audio settings every time I update my drivers.

Yes, I have to fix that, and re-do my overscan correction every time I install a new driver. It's a pain.

I think Nvidia believes the vast majority will stick with them no matter what they do as long as they have the best video cards and driver support. All the vitriol in this thread won't amount to jack shit. I bet they are right, too.

So what that means is that we'll have to download driver packages extracted from Experience from mediafire and such sources hoping that they don't contain anything extra in them.

I don't see how people who consciously uncheck Experience from installing right now would go and install it when being forced to. I certainly will avoid it as much as I can - up to a point where I'll use my antivirus to block it from launching.

Good move, 10/10, NVIDIA.

I presume this is stage one of "we now have an effective monopoly, we can do whatever the fuck we want now".

Stage 2 is them rolling this up into GeForce Now. I'm calling it now.

It's going to come to a head eventually and collapse. There's going to be other storefront/platforms popping up on PC. We've already got Steam/Uplay/Xbox W10 Store/Origin and now we have shit like this.

I literally have to go in and turn off Geforce EXPERIENCE services that are still running even though the program isn't up. The capture service is has a performance hit on games and I'm tired of having to turn it off every time I boot my PC upl

GFE has worked well enough for me when using Shadowplay, but it has crashed or given me an error literally every time I have tried to update drivers through it. I've always downloaded the drivers manually, uninstalled the previous ones and then installed the new ones.

So fuck, I guess. I really hope they put some serious effort into making GFE a decent piece of software before they start enforcing this.

I am trying to figure what they gain from doing this. The software is free, this doesn't make any sense.

E-mails. The same reason every piece of hardware, PC or otherwise, encourages you to register it on their site.

I have GeForce Experience running all the time because of ShadowPlay, and at some point I registered because "why not?", but this is shitty for people who care more about privacy than I do.

Alright, now why is it that there's all this talk like it's a doomsday sort of thing to be happening? Why not just use an email account that you use for registrations? I have one that has none of my personal information on it specifically for this kind of thing.

I think they already screwed up the headache part because I get a headache just trying to process their rationale behind this move.

I wonder if this is the reason why AMD got a slight bump on its stock today, haha.

lol fuck off Nvidia. People will just download them from Guru3D anyway.

yup this wont change anything and certainly won't stop the leaks, better not had anyway, nvidia drivers are pretty shitty, their mainline branch has to my knowledge never downclocked my titan x from 1000mhz ever, it just sits there on desktop running way too fast, thankfully their vr dev drivers and various other beta drivers are fine

How does this benefit us lol? Their reason is total bs though. Shadowplay is the only reason I use GeForce Experience. It always try to optimize my game settings everytime I run it. Yeah, no thanks, I can do that myself.

I always download and install drivers manually from the Nvidia site, because GeForce Experience just confuses me.

Please stop.

If giving 'choice' to pros and casuals is such a big deal, why not host two drivers on one page and bloody signpost it.

This is the quarterly 'stable' geforce driver for most users.

This is the less stable tweaked for performance game driver for gamers, with ongoing tweaks and fixes for the lastest releases.

Give a choice and make it explicit what they both do.

Bloody PR corporate doublespeak shite.

Where are the good news? Honestly. This industry is getting so frustrating. Greed fucking killed my hobby

I don't know why they would do this and honestly it looks kind of shady. I use GeForce Experience to stay up to date with my drivers so I don't have a problem with the application, it just seems silly to limit peoples choice.

This benefits Nvidia and Nvidia only. Nvidia strikes me as a company that'll have no qualms about abusing their dominant market position as much as they can. The problem for Nvidia is that it's hard to lock people into buying their cards, so they try to create software features to lock people into their ecosystem. GFE is just one more example of this, and hiding important driver updates behind it will only help serve this purpose.

This old classic seems appropriate.

Makes me question what they are planning when they are going to start locking drivers behind a registration....what's next? Paying for drivers?

What kind of slippery slope crap is this? They haven't even implemented the registration stuff yet, maybe enough people will complain that they won't do it in the first place.

Even if it did get to that point, no one in their right mind would buy Nvidia products at that point.

Oh my god. I haaaaate crap like this.

Someone in this thread mentioned Guru3d.com offers standalone links? Guess I should bookmark that site.

I always use display driver uninstaller in safe mode to totally wipe every trace of the old driver out before installing the new one, then I have to do some registry edits to get my EDID override working again after each new driver install (I need my 4:4:4).

It's a hassle, but it's an even bigger hassle when I don't have control over what I'm doing. It already blows a million dicks at once that Windows 10 installs drivers automatically without consent or notification- I've already had multiple instances of installation conflicts that led to intractable Windows update errors because Windows was installing an out of date driver while I was trying to install the newest one. It means I have to stop everything I was doing, let Windows finish installing the shitty driver, then go back to safe boot and remove it and do the installation over again, this time with my internet access disabled. DDU is supposed to disable these auto updates, but somehow Windows seems to keep overriding it.

Automated update processes are bullshit, and Geforce experience is just another obstacle to being able to cleanly install things the way I want. Why force users into this? What do they gain? Isn't Geforce experience readily available to users who don't want to/ don't know how to manually update?

The only way I'd be okay with this is if Geforce experience actually made a cloud backup of all your settings/registry fixes, then wiped all traces of the last driver for you in safe mode before install and then reapplied all your backed up settings automatically. Then it would actually be convenient and I'd actually like it. As it is now, it's just an unnecessary pain in the ass that I avoid at all costs.

I had a glitch for a long time where GeForce experience would never open, it would just keep loading forever and ever. I would've been fucked if I'd still had that issue and they did this.

Don't know if I ever fixed it as I re-installed W10 a few weeks ago.

Oh no, I have to do a free registration to access some optional features. How will I survive.

I use AMD cards.

Edit: I didn't realize it also requires you install their management software. Sucks, but people who really want to download them separately will be able to find alternatives elsewhere.

Well that is a stupid move from Nvidia, really unnecessary. I hope the negative feedback make them reconsider this. I like most of the things that Experience does but it's a buggy mess sometimes:

* Sometimes it won't load at all or is slow as fck
* Most of the times the download speed of the drivers is awful, faster via web
* Sometimes drivers downloaded from the application fail to install for w/e reason
* Sometimes it eats 15% to 20% of CPU time.
* Sometimes the overlay is buggy and crash some games or the game lost focus.

This is just stupid. I bought your fucking GPU, you have my damn money, piss off with arbitrary restrictions. Fuck 2015, it's not even fucking enough anymore to buy something. I love nvidia, but the hell with this.
