Polyphony Digital studio founder Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that he’s planning to continue working on the Gran Turismo game series into the future, and beyond next year’s Gran Turismo 7.

The comment came in a rather unusual interview between Yamauchi and Masayuki Chatani, the chief digital officer of the Japanese arm of international accountancy firm KPMG, and CEO of KPMG Ignition Tokyo. Chatani himself used to be chief technical officer at Sony Computer Entertainment, and was heavily involved in the development of the PlayStation 3 during 14 years at Sony.

“Well, I intend to continue Gran Turismo going forward, which will be in the same boat as the car culture and automobile industry. At the same time, I would like to also do something different.

“I think that one of the missions of video games is to realize digital twins by connecting the real and digital worlds. On the other hand, I also think that “the reality that can be felt by humans may not necessarily be felt from something real,” and I intend to confront this question for sure.

“I would like to take on the challenge of creating a world where people feel more reality than the real thing, whether this is through Gran Turismo or not.”

His words are way too cryptic to make anything substantial out of what he said. The only clear thing is that he wants to continue making GT games as well as a new IP. And both of these are good.

This
Sony already had a chance to do that and they sacked Evo Studios. They could've made an open world arcadish game and give it Gran Turismo in the title for better recognition. I'm sure fans of the mainline series wouldn't mind.

Driveclub would have been the perfect chance to make another Sony big driving game, a DC2 with a massive single player campaign, a state of the art support, or even an always evolving game like Destiny, with updates for years
What a waste

Having a team that good and just making fucking Gran Turismo for 20 years has to be one of the biggest wastes of talent in the games industry I can think of.

This guy was lucky he has good ties with the japanese leadership. His games take a LONG time to get to market and are not the juggernauts they used to be. Hopefully GT7 is a return to form, GT as a franchise peaked with GT4.

Modern Sony would not tolerate games taking that long and that much money to be produced. Would have axed Polyphony a long time ago. I think he is seeing the writing on the wall and wants to move somewhere else after GT7.

Shame Sony lied about this game coming out in 2021. I refuse to believe they actually thought it would be ready for this year. Im sure everyone ar polyphony knew this was gonna be a 2022
Game or beyond, but sony pushed out a false promise to make their year one look sweeter.

A shame Drive Club was murdered as that could've been the backup mainline racing studio to allow the GT team to do something different.

I feel for him. Yeah staying rich from the constant success of the games is good and all, but it must be taking it's toll on him (and long time teams) having pretty much only made GT games since the 90s.

I hope he gets a chance to create something different.

agree with the posts here , a gran turismo spin off made by evo studios would have been great , i have a feeling KAZ would not allow that

Well...not really. That just means they had a chance to do that WITH EVOLUTION studios, they could just do it with PD instead. I don't even understand why people keep making it sound as if the team going away suddenly means all bets are off on any racer that isn't GT or something as if the issues was a "open world racer" and not Evolution themselves or something.

They could've made an open world arcadish game

They still can so.... they don't NEED Evolution studios to do that though. I don't think Sony will never do some open world racer, simply not with that team. Their issues isn't racers, its shit studios, so for all we know that is something they want, simply by a studio that can do it in a timely manor and with great quality. With how Sony likes Open World titles, I think its very likely. Would love to see a GT done that way or even a WipeOut in some futuristic city.

I know it's only speculation that Evo could've been picked by Sony. I just think it would be the most reasonable choice since PD was focused on making Gran Turismo Sport and dividing the team or hiring more people would take a lot of time and effort.

Also I don't know if you realize that, but PD isn't exactly known for releasing games "in a timely manor". ;) I'm not saying that guys at Evo were flawless. Sure, they fucked up with the launch of Driveclub, but they've redeemed themselves over the next ~18 months and probably learned more about DC's engine and making games for the PS4 in general. It's a shame that they didn't receive another chance, whether with Driveclub 2, Gran Turismo spin-off or something else.

ok but, Sony closed the team for a reason. I don't think its because they hate racing games.

I just think it would be the most reasonable choice since PD was focused on making Gran Turismo Sport

If they had a reason to close that team, I don't see why they'd then leave them open to do another game to waste even more money...

Think about it like this. If you are remodeling a house and a team fucks up the kitchen to holy hell and it cost you lots of money, you will not then hire them to do another part of the house or another project or something, that doesn't mean you don't need the kitchen complete, it simply means you need it complete...simply NOT FROM THEM. Imagine saying something like "the most reasonable choice" is to get the team that just fucked up our last project. As if ZERO teams exist to do such a task. So I don't think it makes sense if they had a reason that had nothing to do with racing. So clearly Sony saw ENOUGH to say they were not going to deal with such a team, its not for me to say who the fuck "redeemed" themselves in a business deal I was not part of. Internally they likely fucked up enough to were Sony couldn't continue to deal with what was going on. Its clear they don't just hate racing games, they had an issue with the team itself.

Also I don't know if you realize that, but PD isn't exactly known for releasing games "in a timely manor".

Doesn't matter, the point is that Sony clearly doesn't want Evolution studios working on their titles, the point is they can chose a different studio and for all we know they are building that game based on the GT7 engine. PD is known for taking a while to build the first game that they put out on new gen systems, they are known for releasing the second faster once the engine is complete.....soooooooo yea.

Its a shit argument that only applies to the first GT they put out on new gens, not all their games in general.

As in...the difference of time between GT4 and 5 was 6 years.

The difference of time between GT5 and 6 was 3 years... :messenger_winking:

GT7 will be the last GT of Kaz? Quite possible. Ryan looks on Turn10 and sees new FM every 2-3 years. GT? Lastly, every...generation.

Kaz can create Tourist Trophy 2.

A counter to Forza Horizon would be great.

The same could be said of Turn 10, that studio has talent, a lot of resources and only ever makes Forza Motorsport, yet a lot of people would say they're happy making that game, you could argue that the same is probably true of Polyphony Digital.
343i has always made Halo, taking the reigns from Bungy, they didn't even invent that game, yet they're basically making only that for their entire career.

I wouldn't be shocked if these studios have internal divisions making new ideas for new games and their ideas just don't go anywhere beyond the games they're known for publicly.

Any long-term studios that have been a part of a major platform holder and proven themselves to be worth their salt should get a chance to make something new, especially after a decade or more working on the same game franchise.
