Pertaining to what games I buy, friends are a big influence. Come on, if everyone has Halo, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros, etc... the fights will be that much more competitive and fun. Even with single-player games, being able to share the experience is fun.
Online games: the sense of competition, and the pure hilarity of some servers.
I guess overall, it's just the fun.
