Can someone explain to a non-American what the issue is with the Keystone pipeline? As far as I know, oil is already being transported from Canada to the US via railways.

It runs through native American land. The natives are trying to fight for their land and right to not have the pipe go through but the greedy oil companies just say "fuck you, we got money."
They also show brutality by attacking protestors and reporters, even unprovoked.

I see, thank you for the response!

And it's going to run through one of the largest aquifers in NA

Outside all the environmental issues, it's basically useless with this oil glut too.

Why is this even needed?

I don't really have a problem with pipelines, it will be better than transportation by train. The Dakota one should be rerouted though.

I agree on both points but we also shouldn't be pretending that keystone xl is going to create any permanent jobs in the US

What's the over-under on how many Sioux will get killed by this decision?
I need to check in with my bookie.

Which should be enough to just say, "maybe we shouldn't"

The problem is when they see this, people see jobs. But they forget, that it's useless since too much oil does the opposite. Basically, they are being shortsighted.

I hope the natives in Dakota resist with force. This is fucking horrible. They need to do something to where those pipeline workers fear to do the work they are about to do.

Do you remember those people that took over a federal building in ohio? Armed and everything, got slap on the wrist.

I don't think these protestors will be treated the same way.

Donald Trump will build a big beautiful pipeline meant to reduce the cost of transporting Canadian oil. At the same time he will let loose the frackers, ensuring that Albertan oil will remain unprofitable to extract anyway. Like building a casino across the street from your other casino.

So economically how will this help? And who?

I mean that's why they are doing this no matter what? So tell me, if anyone knows.

edit: lol. Yeah it all doesn't make sense. I guess create jobs for the pipeline builders.

I've made about two fiddy.
Full disclosure, I have a financial interest in TransCanada of about $140 CAD, indirectly

I guess this is good for Houston but like I said, this is just going to keep killing oil prices. I don't see how it couldn't.

Maybe they'll get so efficient at it they can still make a profit.

And kill the planet faster!

And to think this is only the FOURTH fucking day that shithead has been president. I don't want to think what four years will bring.

The natives don't have a relatively infinite supply of trained military, death dealing drones or crush your little protest tanks. They really do not want to make themselves an enemy of this blonde douche with forceful resistance.

This is what he campaigned on, no one should be surprised. I had a slight hope that he might not rubber stamp a down the ballot Paul Ryan wet dream agenda but it's exactly what he's doing. Alot of long term damage is going to be done in the next (hopefully only) 2 years.

Secretly Ryan and McConnel probably don't care if they lose one of their majorities next cycle given how much shit they're going to push through this moron's desk.

I know what you are saying but that will lead to many deaths. No one will help them.

What would happen if Trump orders that any protesters at Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines be made to leave by any means necessary?

I fully expect live fire approval from the Trump admin when the protests start again. They will be the first dead under America's new authoritarian government.
