BTW, waiting for this update is the highlight of my day. I got in late last night, slept till 1pm and haven't left the house all day.

I've been in my boxers and wife beater the entire day. And now I'm eating soup in front of my computer.

With you, dude. I just had some pasta right out of the pot.

Just make sure not to slop any onto the keyboard. It might gum up the F5 key.

I don't what's worse, the grammar shown on your MSN window or your taste in OS themes.

Oh shit my msn's black, mine my computers personal decors sucks I should get right on that!

EDIT: Great read on the bungie website. Pretty much what I expected.

Best update in recent history.

The details given about hitpoints, melee damage, body damage, shield damage, etc. are awesome. Tyson wins for going that in-depth.

As far as the changes, it's hard to tell on paper what it'll be like. Are 4+ AR bullets a lot? Some Halo pro guy needs to tell me. But if Bungie's had MLG guys in there testing it, then I have very high hopes.

Auto-update sounds awesome. Looking forward to the complete list of changes in a few weeks.

This section is fantastic. Did we know all this? Down to the exact numbers, I mean?

If you’re still reading, you’re probably interested in some details, so we won’t skimp.

A player in MP has a grand total of 115 hit points (to adopt a common term.) 45 of these are body hit points, 70 are shield hit points. For reference, a single AR bullet does 7.5 points of damage, and a BR bullet does 6. A melee attack does 70 for most weapons, with some weapons (notably the Brute weapons) doing 72.

When entering a melee contest, the combined body and shield hit points are compared. If the difference is above a threshold, then one player is determined to have won decisively and is protected from death. After testing with a variety of weapons, we settled on a threshold of 26.5 hit points (slightly rounded.) This translates into 4+ AR bullets worth of damage to decisively win a melee contest, instead of simply having 1 more hit point than the other guy.

There is one more wrinkle to this: your invisible body hit points do recharge, but at a different rate from your shields. While ordinarily this is a non-issue (we’ve always made this largely transparent), it can affect the outcome of a contest. For those of you keeping score, body hit points start regenerating 10 seconds after last taking damage, at a rate of 9 hp/sec. So if your shields are up but you’re fresh from taking a beating, you could still be in trouble in a contest.

For those of you uninterested in the precise details, the upshot is this: if you close for a melee attack and are at a clear advantage (or disadvantage), the outcome will be clear. If the outcome is unclear, too close to call, you will likely trade kills with your victim. But you should no longer watch your opponent saunter away for no clear reason (and if you do, check the film—it tells all.)
.

Halo 1 style, baby. I remember quite a few "I just died in your arms tonight," moments, as we used to call them. When both players died and used the same death animation to fall onto each other.

Very classy to give the proceeds of the paining to Brian's foundation, Frank.
Yeah, he couldn't have picked a more fitting foundation.

The melee update was great. Thanks Frankie.

That was all Luke and Tyson. I was laying around on a chaise picking silk fluff from my bellybutton. I had a glass of champagne and I did not know whether to quaff or guffaw.

Very happy with the BWU.

I started to get a headache with all the technical hit points, and what not. 4 AR bullets is only pushing the trigger twice; that's not that much (as far as I know, I could be wrong).

Is the shield depletion still one hit = all shields gone?

Interesting update. It brings one question to mind though...I thought I remembered in Halo 2, that the "Hit Points" varried depending on if you were hitting the opponent going forward, standing still, or retreating. It looks like the HP value is just 70(72) now regardless of momentum. I'm now wondering if this is more the reason why melee feels off rather than the "most health wins" rule.

Correction: Thanks Luke and Ferrex.

For those not familiar with Brian Morden -

--Short summary of his life and involvement with Bungie

--A longer article about Brian and his involvement in the Bungie community. Be sure to read the story of his visit to Bungie, from the viewpoint of both Brian's dad and Brian himself.

From there you can donate to his Foundation, if you wish.

--Brian Morden Foundation Homepage

--Sound clip of his line from "Halo"

I wasn't involved in the Bungie community back when Brian was, having become a fan of Bungie with Halo. I stumbled upon him via a forum post reference and read up about him at HBO, where I found all these links. For some reason his story resonated with me, and can't help but think of him every time he says his line in Halo, or watch the credits of all three Halo games, where he is thanked.

I don't think so, those calcs were dodgy in h2. IE, if you hit an incline you could slow your momentum and miss the 75dmg melee, hitting the 50 instead. Jumps often had your feet hit them first losing the damage bonus.

one high damage melee is far less random.

Sorry Domino, I got work tomorrow morning. maybe tomorrow we'll play?

edit: AR does 7.5, BR does 6, but fires 3 bullet burst, so 18 for a full hit with burst.

Love the panoramics in the Update.

This shot captures so much about what's great in Halo MP. The flag runner diving down the middle, the Mongose/Wraith playing desperate catch up. The 'hog. Valhalla. If I had to sum up why MP is great, that's a pretty good pic to do so.

Awesome update. I just need something explained to me.

Why does the Assault Rifle do more damage than the Battle Rifle? The BR is more powerful right?

BR fires three shot bursts - 18 damage points (4 posts up). If that's what you're asking.

Oh man. About two hours ago, I got into a BTB game (Neutral Assualt) with four freaking generals on the opposing team. Four. It took everything my team had just to keep them from scoring three times. They had the best sniper I've encountered in MatchMaking thus far, easily. Every shot he took seemed to be a headshot in the beginning. I run for the Missile Pod, boom headshot; a guy was waiting for someone to get into the gunner seat on the Warthog at the back of our base and the next thing you know, boom headshot; I try to see what's going on at the hill in the middle for just a few seconds thinking I'm covered by being on the ramp that leads downstairs in our base, boom headshot. It was just nuts. Even though I ended up with a very shitty K/D Ratio, it was pretty fun trying my damnedest to not let them in our base. :D

Also, amazing Bungie Weekly Update tonight Luke/Frankie. I really liked how in depth you guys went about the melee latency problems, and all the information about our HP. My favorite one since the teasing about Halo 3's cinematics, actually. I can't wait for the fix to release.

So to summarize the Melee Fix. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The only thing that changed, is that now the winner of a melee contest will be determined, not just whoever has a 1-hit-point advantage, you must have what would equate to a 4+ AR bullet advantage over the other person.

However, Most of the time, even if you win the Melee battle, you will still walk away a 1-shot kill with barely any health. Because even though you won the melee battle, you still took damage?

Sounds like it.

I understand it as thus:

--Currently, if players throw mêlée within 100ms and are both low enough that a blow will kill them, who ever has 1 or more points more health wins the contest. The winner takes mêlée damage, but does not die.

--Post-patch, when players throw mêlée within that 100ms window and they are both low enough that a blow could kill them, health is again considered. If one player has a health advantage of 26.5 hit points or more (I love that Tyson specified this was rounded), then that player takes damage but wins the contest, without dying. If no player is above that hit point threshold, both players will be killed.

Essentially, instead of one outcome in a mêlée contest (the player with the most health wins) there can now be two 1) player with 26.5 health advantage wins; 2) both players are killed.

I probably missed something, but that's my understanding right now. It will introduce a fair number of simultaneous deaths in addition to reducing the frequency of the "but I hit first!" frustration. Probably won't eliminate it, but I can see this reducing the problem significantly.

Which means I'll be playing the smaller playlists again. :D
