Good games tonight, guys. Ghaleon, I hope your map gets approved a.s.a.p.! I had a lot of fun and thought it was better than the previous iterations of it. :D
Thanks, and to everyone who helped play, refine and provide (mostly) constructive feedback. EazyB's nerfed edition was a turning point for it. It was not always a good map, and you guys helped make it into one, IMO. I captured a clip of Nokyard jousting in the Choppers tonight. It was a hoot.

Here's the Atlas submission.

Regardless of how it goes, I learned a tremendous amount about map making and had a great time play testing it with everyone here. I think it's largely to your credit that it was highlighted in Bungie Favorites this week. Regardless of how the submission to Atlas goes, that's a pretty big honor in my book and I couldn't have done it without you.

I'd also like to thank the Academy, my agent, and my wife Marsha, who puts the kids to bed solo while dad is playing video games right outside the kids' bedroom during GAF game nights.

Okay, it's bed time now. My highlight of the night during the matchmaking portion. CTF, Valhalla. We have the flag, but I'm circling around to get in position for a second grab once we cap it.

I spy the enemy Warthog, but it's not in the spawn location. Sure enough, there's a guy in it, honking like mad to get a gunner.

He sees me, bails out to engage. I do likewise. Cue spaghetti western music.

80291643-Full.jpg

I'm packing the SMG, he's got an Assault Rifle. This won't even be close, assuming I can close the distance. I circle to keep the Warthog between us.

80291713-Full.jpg

Now or never!

80291775-Full.jpg

Oh look - a truck! And the keys are in the ignition.

80291849-Full.jpg

If only he had the SMG out, his clip wouldn't have run out already.

80291892-Full.jpg

I'll just add that one to the collection....

and, i got this message while we were playing the Slayer game tonight

XBL Message said:
wow ur a fucking fag you got on bungie favs for that grifball map that you didnt even make
referring to Grifball High

so myself and my two guests found him (lets call him guy) on an open forging session and invited him to join our party to question him on the matter - he stated that his friend, and his friends brother, spent weeks building the map and that he was extremely pissed off that i would have the nerve to steal it and have it put in Bungie Favorites - he then proceeded to invite the maps 'builder' into the party fully expecting that his friend (lets call this one friend) would rip me a new one - the friend came in and reaffirmed the original claim - there was only one thing left to do:

"well then my good friend" i killed them with kindness, "lets see this map to see how similar it is to mine. i would be delighted if you could start a forging session so we could put this matter to rest"

'bleep, bleep, bleep, bloop'

"wow! this does look incredibly close to the map i built" mocking fake surprise

the friend grumbled something i could not quite make out "you f___ing th__f" trying to act tough, but i could tell he was having difficulties getting his words out with me being ultra-polite to the point of being sickly-sweet - if i was any more polite i would have had to fake a british accent

my friends started to snicker under their breath

"well, it is ... fairly close ... anyway" i faked that i was starting to break as if i was being caught in a lie "except for those crooked boxes placed on top of the pyramid thingies", "you know, the things a player could unfairly stand on" i snapped back, effectively retracting the first statement

a few more snickers

"so lets change the game type to Assault please, if you don't mind kind sir"

"ok, but i don't see why"

"to see where the Bomb Pickup is" i lied

"ok"

'round over'

new round starts

me, without moving from my Spawn or going into Forge mode "see that thing floating in the middle above the Bomb Pickup? look at it"

"ok"

before they got there i called out in my surest voice "8th Team!" - that confused them - it did not confuse my friends - they all flew to the Spawn Area Marker - when one of them looked at it a Spawn Area measuring 7x21.5 magically appeared

"WOW!!! what the hell is that!" they both exclaimed

"it is a marker for measuring the outside Spawns - surely and forger would know that - notice how it is labeled 8th Team - and that i called 8th team right after spawning"

they weren't giving up that easily "well anyone who downloaded the map could have found that" - i will give them that one

"ok then, lets look back here (red end, right side) - see the Wedge Long?"

both the guy and the friend followed me back there, friend standing in the corner, guy 2 feet to his left - 'prefect position' i thought to myself

"no. what Wedge?"

i shot at the corner to get them to look

they looked at the corner where i shot

i quickly went in to Monitor mode and deleted the Block Double they were standing on and quickly went back to player mode - the friend was left standing on the Wedge Long beside me - the guy fell to his death

"that Wedge Long!" i exclaimed

the snickers were getting louder - i could hear one of my friends cover his mouth - he was about to erupt - i had better get this over with before he cracks

"for my final demonstration i am going to throw a random grenade - please delete the block it lands on if you don't mind"

did

done

"another Wedge! this one Short?" (placed there in the final build to remove one last 'bump' and make the floor completely smooth - no one but me would know of it's existence without deleting floor blocks) i said using the same '8th Team' voice, but with an added inflection that could be interpeted as 'i'm not fukkin kidding, punk', a tone which would make Clint Eastwood shake in his boots

"ok, i give up, i admit it, i stole your map" "so what are you going to do about it? report us?"

"why no sir, i am just glad you enjoyed my map" "please feel free to use it, and change what ever you want, and claim it as your own"

and in my best used-car salesman voice i added "please visit grifball.com for all your grifball needs"

my friends could hold back no longer - they broke out in laughter just as they kicked guy and friend from the party and said "nok, you can't fire a BR to save your life but you pwn Camapign, you pwn Forge, and now you pwn map stealing dbags"

hoping Halo 4 adds XBL voice recording to Saved Films

OMG DADDY'S A THIEF

(Really? You were gonna go up against him with an SMG? You got guts, sir.)
Nah. I never fired a shot. As soon as I saw he had an AR and was backing up, I was going straight for the Warthog. The SMG was just to intimidate him.

I was thinking last night about ODST's hub world and the potential it holds to really capture the concept of the E3 2003 trailer, where it really looked like you could have a lot of choices to where and how you moved about the environment. Even if we leave out any probable improvements Bungie could create with enemy AI, combat scenarios and just the general level of quality when it comes to encounters, the hub world is packed with some impressive potential. Being able to control a player within a Halo game, side-by-side with three other people as we move across an open space, evading Phantoms, tackling Brute patrols, assaulting road blocks and infiltrating entrenched Covenant positions -- that's just too awesome.

For instance, having two guys with snipers move to elevated positions to scout out the enemy location, while the other two take to the alleys and streets, quietly infiltrating the enemy encampment -- then the two snipers fire on high value targets, throwing the encampment in disarray while the two groundside players having already moved in deeper, surprising the enemies from behind them. This is the sort of bad ass stuff in the hub world that's floating through my mind right now. "Where are you Monday?"

Sort of Halo related:

Our good man Neill Blomkamp (the guy who did the live action Halo shorts) has got a new movie he co-wrote and is directing and I don't know how I didn't hear of this movie before yesterday. It looks awesome. It's called District-9

Those Halo short films were awesome by the way.

Reminds me of a short film he did before the Halo shorts. ALOT! Will watch though.

Blomkamp is cool :D

Found it: Alive in Joburg

When growing up, at least 50% of any fun I had by way of Christmas was all about guessing what was under the tree. I'll try to dial it down here though going forward. :-)

wow that was pretty awesome! This movie seems to be the same as that but a lot longer. Probably more money put into it as well.

Yea really, it would be nice, but I don't think the game will reach the levels of awesome he's conjuring up in our minds. :lol :(

Haha, nice story, Nokyard.

I hope it is as awesome as he hypothesizes, but will that make Microsoft push it to 60? :(

I personally don't have a problem with it being full price, the multiplayer alone has given me more value than about 30 games ever could. The game is going to have more features than just 3 MP maps anyways if they plan on full pricing, IMO.

Yeah, I can't believe I hadn't heard of it til you posted the link tbh. With Peter Jackson on board it should be pretty sweet too. Interesting website for the film as well.

Umm... so did you guys have the opportunity to try out any of the maps I highlighted in that list yesterday? Which ones were good? Which were trash?

Lotus was a really good TS and FFA map when we gave it a spin last night. Had a lot of fun on Ben's map as well.

Yeah, Lotus was pretty awesome. From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, it's one of the best creations I've seen so far. Excellent FFA map. Got a good clip to - someday - render out of it. :D

I was thinking about ODST this morning and any probable Halo games we'll see in the future which all lead me back into admiring Forge mode. I'm really impressed with some of the map variants that have popped up because Sandbox's palette and I'd love to see Forge do so much more. I feel that Forge mode isn't going to be extremely expanded upon during this console cycle just because of the amount of work it would require. If anything it would be iterated on for next main Halo game. Personally, I'd love to see it blown up into a full blown map editor Little Big Planet-style. Specifically with crazy options like being able to create moving platforms, elevators, doors, you name it!

And then see the developer treat this new Forge mode and the map variants created with it as a platform like Harmonix does with Rock Band DLC and like Media Molecule plans on doing with the eventual release of Little Big Planet 2. It would be compatible with future Halo games so the maps aren't lost into the ether once everyone moves on to the next game. That would be so amazing that I'd lock myself into a room and just make maps all day. And there would never be a shortage of actual new and fresh maps!

Such a fun playlist too, too bad I have to play it alone. :(

I was a 29, went in alone on a whim, won the game and went to a 31 :lol Tried my luck again, lost, and went down to a 30 :/
